The Call of Addictions….

I felt the need to talk on this topic… well because it’s a big topic and it affects not only the people who struggle with addiction; but those connected too the person who struggles with addiction.

When it comes to interacting in this world, NOTHING is ever just about one person, there is and always will be a ripple effect, everyone our lives touch especially those we love, are draw into any addiction phase on some level if not on many levels.

There are many area’s  that people can find themselves held hostage:

  •  Emotional addictions,
  • alcohol dependency,
  •  caffeine,
  • prescription drugs,
  •  tobacco,
  • sugar, foods;

anything that draws us to a point where we don’t feel we can function without IT, whatever IT is for that person.

What might emotional addiction look like? Well… emotions control a lot of what someone either feels passionately about or is crippled by .  Yet emotional addiction can also fall in a place where someone gets addicted to being treated in a particular way, they have to have it in their life or they seek to create the atmosphere. I believe sexual addiction blends into the emotional slot, because I believe most are drawn into sexual addiction due to emotional addictions.

  •  OCD issues, which means control; most of these actually function from some element based in “fear”, fear of being alone, fear of crowds, fear of being away from a particular daily routine, fear of starting anything new, fear of failure that hinders them from ever sticking their toe in the water to embark on anything new, fear of rejection, fear of feeling loved, fear of not being loved. It ends up feeling like a perpetual cycle of one sorts or another.

Addictions really are all around us, and they are terribly difficult for folks to want to acknowledge let alone talk openly about them.

An addiction really is a dependency that creates any compulsive or habitual need to repeat a particular experienceSome addictions fall into  mild up to sever, socially acceptable to unacceptable.” (Steven Horne AGH)

HOW DOES SOCIETY ACTUALLY MAKE ADDICTION A SOCIALLY ACCEPTABLE FORM OF LIVING?

There are addictions that fall into the socially acceptable zone, like tobacco & alcohol, and sexual addictions, they seem so common place today most folks don’t waste a second blink when the topic comes up.

Yet it’s socially acceptable for folks to go out to drink  to spend time together, and folks laugh about who drank so much they couldn’t remember the evening, or was so sick they called off work the next day.  No big thing in society, it’s called socializing!
Those who smoke cigarettes already know that it’s causing some form of damage to their lungs, heart, cardiovascular system. Not so long ago smoking was allowed on prime time programs, and commercials. Certain brands through advertising tried to glamorize the hunky, handsome cowboy smoking their  brand.   It is wonderful that things are changing where smoking is concerned, and more and more states are making it illegal to smoke in public places to protect everyone, and more and more people are finding the strength to eliminate the habit .

Ok alcohol and tobacco are obvious addictions, what’s another socially acceptable one….

Caffeine Oh man, it’s a biggie, coffee shops popping up all over, and if you think getting a fancy mixed drink can end up being pricey, well, have you gotten any fancy expresso, frappuccino or latte  coffee lately  $5 dollars and up per cup.   Peeps just cannot get their day started without the java, and it’s socially acceptable when someone admits “I can’t  even think about conversation  UNTIL I’VE HAD AT LEAST MY 2ND CUP OF COFFEE”… means, their brains don’t feel like they can socially connect without it, now toss in the mix caffeinated pop’s, energy drinks and popular energy caffeine shots sold at every single gas station in America.  Think we have a caffeine issue in our country?

Move onto the socially acceptable addiction with foods/sugars more than 80% of the people in our country fall into the overweight

DO COMPULSIVE BEHAVIORS CLASSIFY AS ADDICTION?

What about behaviors…. are those really addictions?  Well, you decide, we have television programs that showcase folks who need help with hoarding , they suffer from being compulsive about having certain things. Then there is:

  • gambling,
  • shopping,
  • sex, these behaviors again fall into the emotional addiction because much of our behavior is guided by open or buried emotions.
  •   When we have any behavior that we cannot bring ourselves to stop, even when we know its damaging to ourselves and those in our lives, its an addiction!

Why does it seem like having a issue with an addiction is so easy to fall into and so difficult to pull out of?
It’s the human desire to “feel” good!  When people become addicted to certain substances or behaviors certain neurotransmitters are released in their brain & nervous system, like endorphins, dopamine or epinephrine.  Most addictive substances either mimic or trigger the release of these chemicals, they elevate moods and do what they are supposed to do, “make us feel good !”  Then our body comes to depend on this outside trigger to release these chemicals and the circle of dependency begins.

Our human nature, and its driven need for ritual, love of pleasure, cravings, these  are deeply carved, making moderation for many, easier said than done.

Then you have many well-meaning folks who think , ” if it’s not good for you, just have the will-power to say no”!  It is critical to understand that to overcome addictions by willpower definitely  won’t be everyone’s way to achieve success, the proof is in the relapse numbers.  There has been a chemical imbalance that some of these substances are meeting a need for physically.  There is a nutritional deficiency in place that needs addressing, and many need assistance addressing repressed  emotional triggers.
Support and accountability are key in overcoming any sort of addiction issue. As is nutritional balancing they both need to go together!

Sad truth …when trying to over-come one addiction another is usually substituted to take  it’s place, so spending time dealing with all root issues is paramount to success…. many reach for junk foods, sugars, etc. or some replace one behavior addiction with a different one.

NUTRITIONAL SUPPORT KEY PLAYER

Beginning to nutritionally give your body what it’s been lacking, and bringing back a balance of nutrients, then the body has the ability to produce the chemicals that make one feel good by design.

Nutritional changes have to be incorporated for success, you can’t stop alcohol or drug dependency living on processed junk foods and expect positive results for any long term length of time.
_______________________________________________________________________________________

CODEPENDENCY

Then there are those who are drawn into this emotional addiction circle through someone else’s addiction.  We see this frequently when someone has been in a relationship with someone or a family member or friend who is struggling  with dependency on alcohol,  drugs even behavior addictions.

They can get emotionally addicted to trying to fix others that they have coping mechanisms that can end up being counter productive  for themselves and all involved. They are experiencing  their own heightened levels of stress and also need good nutritional  balance and an emotional  support outlet.

I believe that each and every person is touched by this category in one area or another, it’s epidemic in my opinion.  Which is why I chose to write about it.  Truth is, it’s touched my life since my childhood on multiple planes,  I understand the emotional rollercoaster of emotions that can be experienced watching people you love dearly struggle.

There is a depth of healing that takes place both from those who have the addiction to those that fall in the ripples zone.

ALCOHOL

Lets move onto the alcohol.  For all basic purposes alcohol  is a refined carbohydrate, which contributes to hypoglycemia.

Over-consumption now well, that over a period of time we know damages:

  • liver,
  • brain,
  • nervous system,
  •  kidneys,
  •  pancreas,
  •  personal relationships,
  •  employment,
  •  It’s a big contributor in traffic accidents even fatalities while driving, which brings with it legal fees that further adds to the stress cycle of not being able to cope.
  • _________________________________

NATURAL OPTIONS THAT MAY BE HELPFUL

So one can physically ease the craving for alcohol by improving the quality of nutrition that goes into their body.
When poor nutrition is happening; what might that look like? Well   replacing the alcohol with lots of sugar which is typically what happens because sugar can also raise dopamine levels in the brain,  increased use of caffeine, junk fast food . What happens as a result over time the craving for alcohol creeps back into being, refined sugars raise the blood alcohol levels especially when yeast overgrowth in the body is involved.

So balancing the blood sugar swings will be helpful:

  •  Chromium GTF (click on the product name if you want to read more about it) can help stabilize blood sugar levels in the blood and reduce alcoholic cravings.
  • A good B Complex Vitamin
  • evening primrose oil helps reduce the cravings for alcohol. It also is a source of Gamma-linoleic Acid, an important essential fatty acid that helps the immune system and supports the circulatory system.
  •  Vitamin C ascorbate daily along with large amounts of magnesium that the alcohol robs from the body.

Some find their nerves feel frayed and some get headaches:

An excellent formula to aid the recovering alcoholic

  • Kudzu  is a vine common to the southern states with the properties of reducing high blood pressure, relieving pain and cramps.  Studies have demonstrated it also posses the ability to help control ravings for alcohol.
  • St. Johns wort adds the benefits of bringing the nervous system back into balance and helps to dispel negative emotions associated with alcoholism.

One of the more addictive aspects where beer is concerned isn’t just about the alcohol; its the hops used in making the beer.  Hops is an herb that contains a sedative substance with a mild addictive effect.

  • Hops can be taken to reduce cravings for beer, providing a similar relaxing affect without the negative issues that go with the alcohol.

We have to include and talk about the liver here because this organ ends up working overtime to neutralize alcohol when levels are too high in the blood, its the liver that breaks down after long abuse.  We call it Cirrhosis.  The liver is one of those organs that can repair itself; all it needs is a break.

  •   Milk Thistle can be helpful for protecting the liver from the effects of alcohol, and helping the liver to heal.  When this organ has suffered sever damage due to alcoholism, Milk Thistle and
  • SAM-e along with topical application of
  • helichrysum essential oil over the liver area will promote healing.

 CAFFEINE

Let’s move onto the caffeine, I bet this one would fall into the most widely used drug, partially because its not regarded as a one, yet it’s used in lots of over the counter headache meds.

I remember taking a medication as a teen-ager for migraine headaches called Cafergot, caffeine listed as top I gredient which caused me to go into convulsions and required a transport.

Caffeine isn’t regarded by most as dangerous.  Our nation is literally on use over load.

Adults use it freely, and kids are drinking it in their pop like Mountain Dew which has a high caffeine ratio.  In spite of the numerous jokes folks make about gotta have their caffeine or cannot function, excessive use of it can cause serious damage to the brain and central nervous system.

What happens is with continual habitual use of caffeine reliance, regardless if your fix comes from :

  • coffee,
  • pop,
  •  tea
  • , Red Bull, or other commercial energy drinks loaded with caffeine and sugar, when you use it for energy and  to sustain it, a regular pattern begins to establish.

But let me walk you thru what happens in the body, caffeine stimulates epinephrine production, which speed up the function of your central nervous system.  When you rely and habitually use caffeine as your source for revving up your inner engine, it causes :

  • adrenal fatigue,
  • anxiety,
  • nervousness,
  •  insomnia and other nervous symptoms.

Since it depletes the adrenals, which causes fatigue, one needs to begin to rely on more caffeine intake to keep from dropping due to exhaustion, or the mid day crash and burn while at work.

We are seeing more and more young people having heart attacks, and being hospitalized due to cardia related symptoms who are drinking lots of energy drinks that are heavy in the caffeine load.

Prolonged caffeine use is linked to:

  •  Ischemia,
  •  cyanosis,
  • EKG changes,
  •  muscle pains,
  •  tachycardia,
  • bradycardia,
  • hypertension,
  • numbness,
  • tingling,
  •  vertigo,
  • neurological issues,
  •  vascular headaches. (hint, caffeine dehydrates body tissue and dehydration contributes to lots of these symptoms too).

___________________________________________

NATURAL NUTRITIONAL OPTIONS

There are some herbal options that strengthen the adrenals like:

  •  licorice root,
  •   Adrenal Support and
  • Nervous fatigue formula these can be helpful with helping one thru caffeine withdrawal.

These same herbal products can also prove helpful with sugar addiction which is often like hand in glove to caffeine addiction.

There are healthier pick-me ups that won’t damage the adrenals, cause the headache from hell like caffeine,

  •  Energ-V,
  • Solstic Energy (just pour one packet in your bottle of water shake and go)
  • Target Endurance, these are healthy safe ways to increase energy levels.
  •   I love, love , love, Liquid Chlorophyll ES added to my water for a natural energy boost.  I frequently put in the water bottle I take to the gym.

__________________________________________________________________________________________

DRUGS

Lets move to the drugs that cause addiction,  there is a list of these that I am not going to go into depth by name or category with in this post because there are so many.

What I want to point out is drug addictions are a compulsive psychological and many times a painful physiological craving.

Withdrawal from drug addiction requires BOTH detoxification and nervous and glandular system support!

Professional assistance should be sought after for help with drug withdrawal, but GOOD nutritional and supplements can be helpful, they are only one piece of the puzzle towards recovery.  Emotional, physical, and nutritional aspects have to be dealt with!

Whatever the drug, one thing is certain.  It will become a burden on the liver.  So, herbs which help to detox the blood and strengthen the liver are probably central to any nutritional program for drug withdrawal.

  •  Milk Thistle Combination
  • , All Cell Detox or
  •   Enviro-Detox. Although the amounts will vary from person to person based on the advice of your Practitioner.  It is important to drink lots of water to help flush the drugs from your system.

Anyone withdrawing from drugs is going to experience mental and emotional stress.  so a nervine formula such as :

  • Stress-J
  • Stress Relief, or
  • Nervous Fatigue Formula would be helpful during the withdrawal phase.

As with alcohol & tobacco addiction, adrenal support can prove helpful because blood sugar imbalances are often part of addictive behavior.

________________________________________________________________________________________

SUGAR

I also want to briefly tough  on the addiction with sugar/foods…

The compulsive urge to eat sugar usually comes from a glandular imbalance.  Yep when there are adrenal and pancreatic imbalances what happens is there ends up being a deficiency of protein or a lack of proper protein digestion and metabolism.

Many also lack good fats and trace minerals in the diet.  Yeast infections usually play a huge role too.  Food addictions in general signify glandular and biochemical imbalances.

Folks are also emotional eaters, people are taught as children that food is a reward system.  Get good grades let me bake you some cookies, or something to celebrate lets go get cake or pie, (how do we celebrate birthdays?  with what?) why and how did that cycle ever come into being that cake is what needed to be symbolized for celebrating a birthday? No I really didn’t want to research that part.

People compensate using different foods, i.e. snacks, for various emotional highs and lows in their lives.  Excessive cravings for sweets or food in general can also come from a fealing of lack of sweetness (joy) in ones life which causes one to seek pleasure thru their foods.

So dealing with addiction in this area definitely requires taking the time to bring the body back into balance, digestive enzymes can be helpful, as would probiotics.  Considering a yeast detox thru diet and/or food elimination.  Adding Essential fatty acids, higher fiber, lots of water and some good whole food multi-vitamins.

Each person is unique and the beauty of working in the field of Naturopathy, I treat each person as an individual and allow the body to be the messenger, vs. a one-size fits all approach.

I really didn’t want this post to be this windy and stretch out this long, yet when I started writing, there were things that just felt important to place in it.  I will write more individually on each of these areas so I can dig in deeper.

If you’d like help with your Nutritional Battle Plan in tackling any of these addictions.  You can go to http://www.jodibarnett758.com and click on my services tab.

Any of the products I spoke of in this post can also be found thru the products link there as well.

Thank you all…

Hebrews 11:1 NLT ” Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see.”

With addictions there IS HOPE, have the FAITH to reach for it…

What’s The Real Scoop On Inflammation?

Most of our health issues have a direct “root” in “inflammation”. Inflammation is a normal response to any sort of tissue damage or even injury, sprain an ankle whats the 1st thing that happens, the body sends fluid to the area injured and it swells…
Inflammation also happens when there is a chemical/microbial issue . (toxin & infection). So bottom line it doesn’t really matter how the body gets injured, inflammation is going to be how the body responds to the damage.
It is the Latin term for inflammation, which usually brings with it heat, swelling, redness, and sometimes pain at the site of injury.. Take a look at some of the descriptions of illness like Appendic-ITIS , it means inflammation of the appendix. bronch-ITIS, inflammation of the bronchials, tonsil-ITIS, inflammation of the tonsils. Now go onto arthritis, tendonitis, bursisis, colitis, dermatitis, gingivitis, conjunctivitis, diverticulitis, sinusitis, etc. is anyone seeing a pattern yet?
Inflammation typically resolves itself and the injury is able to heal. when healing isn’t completed, tissues can become chronically inflamed. a slow process of deterioration begins which takes things to the chronic and degenerative place, like cardiovascular disease, arthritis, obesity and even mental issues that seem to be beyond common place for folks today.
What happens when the tissues are damaged, the body releases something called histamine, which is followed by a release of bradykinin, serotonin and some other chemical mediators. What happens is these dilate capillary pores and initiate inflammation by allowing fluid & proteins to enter the tissue spaces that are damaged creating swelling. this is usually the 1st phase of inflammation.
The body then releases chemical messengers to open blood vessels so the white blood cells can reach the damaged zone. which causes further swelling. So at this point lets say if the issue happens to be in ones respiratory tract, histamine & leukotrienes will cause bronchial constriction & increased mucus to flush the toxins from the mucus membranes, usually pain receptors are brought to life at this point. We FEEL it.
White blood cells use free radicals to destroy microbes & cell debris. Healthy cells need adequate levels of antioxidants (which is why we should have a daily intake especially thru foods) to protect themselves from the free radicals. so when antioxidant levels are too low, healthy tissues are able to get damaged which then can allow inflammation to spread.
After the white blood cells have completed their cleanup job, is when the body initiates the healing phase. Cortisol from the adrenals is then secreted to shut down the production of the chemical messengers that mediate the inflammation process. Macrophages clean up the rest of the garbage left and a regenerative cycle begins as chemical messengers are released which stimulate tissue repair. (our body is beyond amazing, what a CREATOR we have).
When there is chronic inflammation, the body is not quite able to complete the healing phase of the inflammation process. It sort of gets stuck in the earlier phases. So the free radical activity in phase 3 causes more and more cells to end up getting damaged, causing the inflammatory fires to spread. Like a forest fire, it’s meant to burn up the dead material, but if it gets hot enough it will begin to take with it healthy areas in the process.
So bottom line what I’m saying: in order for inflammation to heal as it is supposed to do by design, there has to be nutrients available for the healing & repair to happen, if we are constantly exposed to environmental toxins and a horrible nutrient lost diet, and adrenal fatigue from chronic stress which shuts down cortisol production, then the healing initiation can be prevented from completion. We also need adequate lymphatic drainage to assist with excess fluid removal from the damaged tissues.

______________________________________________________________________________________________

STARTING POINT BEGINS HERE:
Detox gotta take the trash out folks, change up what your cleaning with, washing with, change out the chemicals for something healthier, like Natures Enzymes,  ( click on highlighted item for more information) for me this stuff is like LOVE in a bottle, its an awesome cleaner, actually blends as a wonderful carrier for essential oils, can be sprayed directly on the body for pain (kicked tail on my headaches when mixed with some peppermint and Ravintsara Oil)  and the full line of NSP essential oils. ( click on highlighted item for more information)
2nd: Healthy fats… realizing the chemical messages that help to mediate the inflammation process are made from Omega 6 and Omega 3 EFA. We need more Omega 3’s to promote the healing process. I believe we are seeing more and more inflammatory ailments because more and more folks are being misled to reduce the FAT in their diets. problem is they need to of course reduce the hydrogenated fats, and increase the Essential fatty acids, that we have to get from outside sources. Flax oil, ( this comes in liquid or a capsule) Borage oil, Evening primrose, fish oils. Grab more of those.
3rd:  Get rid of the simple refined carbs. We have a bona-fide sugar addiction issue in this country. Take a moment go ONE day, and eat how you normally eat and yet remove ALL the bread, potato, pasta and anything with refined sugars or high fructose corn syrup. so for that to happen you have to read some labels, like read your condiment labels, salad dressing labels, coffee creamers, Most clients when I have them do this for ONE day, they call me and say “whelp, I actually fasted that day, cause now I’m lost, almost everything I eat has some form of simple sugar attached to it. Refined sugars and grains cause your insulin production to SPIKE, high levels of insulin stop the conversion of Essential fatty acids to anti- inflammation chemical messengers. which encourages inflammatory over reaction in YOUR bodies. So refined SUGARS and simple carbohydrates are not healthy. (note there is a difference between simple and complex carbs, take a moment and do some google searches to educate yourself on the difference your health will thank you for it)
4th: I cannot state how many of my peeps show signs of lymphatic congestion, pooling of lymphatic fluid in the spaces around the cells is one of the major effects of inflammation. Understand how your lymph system works, it has no pumps it is gravity fed, meaning it works better when the body is active with movement.. walking, bouncing (rebounder) massage therapy, even acupressure, I like to reach for Lymphomax and lymph drainage to support my body anytime I’ve had some type of an injury.
5th: Get the antioxidants going in the body, eat foods/fruits/veggies that are known to be high in antioxidants, Vitamin C, Thai-go (IS MY ALL TIME FAVORITE) ( You really want to order 2 of these at one time, especially if more than one person is going to be taking) this goes down easy, it tastes good so it was always easy to get it in my kids without a battle, mix it in a fruit smoothie if you like.
6th:  Since the adrenals produce the cortisol that is supposed to help keep inflammation under control. it makes sense you want to support those two almond-shaped wonders that set on top of both kidneys. Think about something, how many folks do you know that are currently taking “corticosteroid prescriptions”,,, it mimics this hormone our body produces.  Since Chronic stress, caffeine and sugar exhaust our adrenals and slow or reduce their ability to control inflammation, might there be a connection as to why so many are physically struggling with out of control inflammation related issues?  I am partial to Adapta Max and Adrenal Support, to support my adrenals, we all should consider supporting our adrenals as we all deal with on-slaught of stressors on a daily basis.
7th: Does NSP have some herbal remedies that can nutritionally help as natural anti-inflamatories.  If you haven’t be able to guess yet, as a Practitioner, I only use NSP herbs & supplements in my practice.  They have been in business for over 45 years, their quality can be trusted and they have stood the test of time.

So that being said;  IF Relief, Nerve Control and IF-C are all great choices, IF-C seems to help bunches if inflammation is acute (sudden onset symptoms) Chronic (means long standing been there awhile) Nerve Control can be of some help nutritionally if there seems to be pain coupled with inflammation and I have found it be super helpful, I used that with SAMe, when I had sciatic issues last year.
Bottom line is just about everything that goes out of whack with us physically has a ROOT in inflammation to one degree or another. so we want to nutritionally support the body systems that are by design meant to keep it in check and work with the body vs. just masking the symptom. But you have to be willing to do your part and change what part of your lifestyle is contributing to the issue. Definition of insanity is WHAT?
Ok folks, that’s my input for the day.. sorry it was so long,

Healthfully yours,

Dr. Jodi Barnett N.D.

Different Probiotics and their benefits.

product05

List of Probiotics and which strains help different issues…

Why do we need them? Well They AID in digestion and help our body assimilate certain nutrients and help produce vitamin B-12.

They protect against YEAST overgrowth and protect against diarrhea when traveling, and even act like a mild laxative when the pipes are experiencing a back-up.

When we take antibiotics, they are depleted and destroyed, so we always want to take probiotics after needing an antibiotic to put back the good bacteria.

Acidophilus :

Benefits:
Helps regulate the intestinal tract.
Supports the digestive, immune and intestinal systems.
Promotes healthy bacteria colonies in the gut.
How It Works:

Acidophilus is a strain of Lactobacillus, a symbiotic, homo-fermentative, lactic acid-producing microorganism. Friendly bacteria help keep in check other microbes that produce toxins that may be absorbed into the bloodstream. As long as all of these different species work in harmony, dangerous types are kept in small enough numbers that they, too, are often beneficial! This illustrates one of nature’s ironies:what is harmful in one amount may actually be healthful in another amount.
Acidophilus and all other helpful bacteria are often destroyed by antibiotics. Supplementation can reintroduce them, creating an optimal balance. Each capsule contains a minimum of 100 million organisms, freeze-dried to maintain viability. Probiotics are well absorbed in the diet and can be taken between meals to maximize absorption. Best if stored in a freezer or refrigerator.

Bifidophilus Flora Force:    (Excellent for children)

I open capsule up and can be placed directly on the tongue.

Benefits:
Improves immune system function.
Helps maintain female vaginal and urinary tract system health.
Helps promote intestinal health in children.
May support respiratory system health in children.
Helps synthesize B vitamins.
Supports the digestive and intestinal systems.
Provides 4 billion beneficial microorganisms per capsule.
How It Works:

The healthy human intestinal tract contains billions of flora that live in a delicate balance with each other and in symbiosis with us. We provide them with a home, and in turn they break down our food into easily absorbed nutrients. They also aid digestion in a variety of ways and promote immunity. Factors such as stress, environmental conditions or the use of certain substances can affect their vitality.
Bifidophilus Flora Force provides billions of beneficial intestinal microorganisms that offer a whole range of health benefits. They help to maintain the natural, delicate balance of flora that inhabit the human intestinal tract. These friendly flora also help to decompose fecal matter, improving nutrient absorption and producing certain vitamins as metabolic byproducts. NSP added fructo-oligosaccharides (short- and long-chain), which support the growth of these beneficial organisms to ensure the potency of this product.
This product is recommended for daily use to help maintain a healthy balance of friendly flora in the intestinal tract and to support the immune system.

NutriBiome Bacillus Coagulans:

Benefits:
May provide relief from occasional digestive upset like diarrhea, gas and bloating
Supports gastrointestinal health
Is shelf-stable, requiring no refrigeration
Contains prebiotic inulin conducive to the growth of friendly bacteria*
How It Works:
Bacillus coagulans is a strain of friendly probiotic that is naturally heat-stable. It can also more readily withstand the stomach’s acidic environment, thereby better providing targeted support to the intestine and maintaining balance in the microbiome.

NutriBiome Eleven Elevated:

Benefits:
Provides 30 billion CFU of 11 strains of beneficial bacteria per serving*
Helps support repopulation and optimization of beneficial bacteria in the gut*
More potent than original Probiotic Eleven formula
Featuring delayed-release vegetarian capsules*
How It Works:

Probiotic supplementation may help to maintain friendly bacteria colonies in the gut, or microbiome, which can be depleted by stress, antibiotics or gastrointestinal disturbances.*
Renew or intensify your probiotic regimen with Eleven Elevated™. Providing 30 billion CFU of 11 strains of friendly bacteria per serving, Eleven Elevated helps support your microbiome, digestive health, immune system and rebalance your gut. Featuring delayed-release vegetable capsules. *
Eleven Elevated contains the same blend of beneficial bacteria and prebiotics found in Probiotic Eleven, our most popular probiotic, but with a higher CFU (colony forming unit) count. Eleven Elevated is approximately 67% more potent per serving and 150% more potent per capsule than Probiotic Eleven.

Probiotic Eleven:

Benefits:
Supports Repopulation of Beneficial Bacteria in the Gut
Provides 11 strains of good bacteria
Nourish and strengthen the gut microbiome and its resident microflora
Supports immune and digestive health
How It Works:
NutriBiome™ Probiotic Eleven is a unique combination of healthful probiotics to help maintain and replenish intestinal supply. These microorganisms perform essential functions in the body and are affected by aging, adverse intestinal pH, microbial interactions, environmental and dietary temperatures, stress, physiological factors, peristalsis, bile acids, host secretions and immune responses. NutriBiome Probiotic Eleven provides 11 species of live microorganisms that exert many beneficial health effects. This specially formulated blend contains strains of important gut-beneficial organisms and prebiotics (non-digestible foodstuffs, including fiber) that serve as food for the probiotics in the colon. Clinical studies have shown that short- and long-chain fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) may improve growth of friendly microorganisms, enhance mineral absorption, support bowel health and function, and promote immune function.

Natures Fresh, Miracle In A Bottle!

What if I told you that by spraying certain enzymes you can have:

  • first aid kit
  • household miracle worker
  • completely NON-toxic
  • safe for the kiddo’s & pets
  • biodegradable
  • removes odors fabulously
  • breaks down stains
  • natural aid for pain
  • wonderful first aid spray

This product has been around for bout 37 yrs.  n the 1980’s Nature’s Sunshine Products introduced an enzyme spray called Nature’s Fresh, as a household stain remover & deodorizing agent.  Which is beyond remarkable at knocking out pet smells, smoke, food odors, and for those that live in the country, EVEN the smell of skunk!  It is 100% natural, and completely non-toxic, it removes stains from clothing, carpets and furniture.  But what NSP didn’t initially realize was that they were also introducing an amazing “first aid remedy” for the body too.

This discovery all started when some innovative NSP Manager felt inspired to spray Natures’ Fresh over the area of a spinal slipped disk.  They had read that disks were composed largely of enzymes & decided to try using the enzyme sin Nature’s Fresh topically to promote healing for the disk.  Well, they felt relief!

WHAT EXACTLY IS NATURE’S FRESH?

Its a mixture of 6 different classes of enzymes derived from plants that are suspended in water.

For those into chemistry, the enzymes in the Nature’s fresh product include oxidoreductases (enzymes that catalyze oxidation-reduction reactions), transferases (enzymes that promote transfer of a group from one molecule to another), lyases (enzymes that form double bonds on the substrate), hydrolases (hydrolytic enzymes-splitting water), isomerases (enzymes that catalyze the conversion of its substrate to an isomeric form), and ligases (enzymes that catalyze the linking together of two molecules).   THAT WAS A MOUTH FULL….

Simply put, this means that Nature’s fresh contains a wide variety of enzymes that can catalyze a variety of chemical reactions.  This allows it to chemically alter a variety of organic odor molecules & organic stain molecules.

WHY ARE ENZYMES IMPORTANT?

Enzymes are organic molecules from living things that act as catalysts.  A catalyst is a molecule that can speed up a chemical reaction without being consumed in the reaction.  Enzymes are organic catalysts.  In chemistry, organic simply means that the compound contains carbon.  Carbon is the basic element found in living things.

Enzymes are the chemical workhorses of the body.  Enzymes make every biochemical reaction in the body possible, from cellular DNA replication to the production of hormones & neurotransmitters.  Without enzymes we couldn’t digest our food or activate our immune system to ward off an infection.  Enzymes are energy, you’ve probably heard them also referred to as the “spark plugs of life”, the body uses them to activate a variety of functions within.

There are 3000 to 5000 enzymes in the human body & without them there is no life.  Now, here is the key secret- the human body will wear out faster if it has to make all of its own enzymes! That’s right, if we are not getting a good supply of enzymes through our diet, our body loses vitality & becomes weaker.

Two books written by Dr. Edward Howell, “Enzyme Nutrition, & The Food Enzyme Concept”, theorizes that humans are given a limited supply of enzyme energy at birth, & that it is up to us to replenish our supply of enzymes to ensure that their vital jobs get done.  If we don’t replenish our supply, we run the risk of health issues. Dr. Howell postulates that, “The length of life is inversely proportional to the rate of exhaustion of the enzyme potential of an organism.  The increased use of food enzymes promotes a decreased rate of exhaustion of the enzyme potential.”

In other words… the more enzymes you get, the longer & healthier you can be.  That is why eating raw organic foods & taking nutritional digestive enzyme supplements is believed to help ward off chronic & degenerative disease, maintain an balance of health & increase overall vitality.  By ingesting enzymes from organic raw foods & supplements, the body gets a break, doesn’t have to work so hard and just may last longer.

So back to this Nature’s Fresh, where does this fit into this whole thing?

Well, I harp constantly to my client’s to get the harsh heavy chemical cleaners out of their homes, they are toxic, my motto is IF you cannot drink it, or put it on your skin without suffering damage you have no business cleaning with it!

Now most of those products are meant to mask odors, or deodorize.  Nature’s Fresh uses natural, non-toxic enzymes to break apart stain & odor molecules.  It works much the same as the digestive enzymes do in our body.  By braking apart amino acids (proteins) or fatty acids (fats or oils), that bind stains & odors to fabrics & carpets, it helps to break them free & emulsify them (hold them in solution) so they can be removed.  Nature’s Fresh works on organic stains & odors & that includes just about everything.

Natures Freshsunshine concentrate

Nature’s Fresh used with NSP’s Sunshine Concentrate, a natural household cleaning product, & a few essential oils can eliminate the need for just about all other household cleaning products.  This helps protect your family’s health by reducing the exposure to chemicals. ( click on the product names if you are interested in purchase)

TIPS & SUGGESTIONS:

dirty walls

CLEANING WALLS: it will remove food stains, cigarette smoke & dirt. For spots spray  on directly, for larger jobs mix 1/4 cup with a gallon of water and a capful of Sunshine Concentrate to create an effective general cleaning solution.

COUNTERTOPS:

I use for cleaning my counter tops and my stove top (it eats thru baked on food without the need for scraping, spray and let sit for a bit and wipes right off, no need to scrape and scratch the surface of your stove or counter tops).

CABINETS & FLOORS :

I use also to wash my kitchen and bathroom cabinets, and the floors.  You can spray directly but for washing the floors, 1/8th cup per gallon of Nature’s Fresh, and a capful of Sunshine Concentrate, and about 15-20 drops Essential oils, I like Lemon, Orange, and Pink Grapefruit, if folks have been sick, I use Tea tree, (Click on the actual Oil names to purchase).

MOLD & MILDEW:

You can spray this directly full strength on mold/mildew and even add to the strength by adding essential oils like Tea Tree, or Thyme. (15-20 drops)

The uses for this spray are endless:

  • clothes & laundry to remove odors
  • air freshener, it doesn’t mask odors it actually breaks them down & eliminates, fabulous for pet accidents.
  • Dishes, you can add this to the dishwasher in place of a spot remover and removes stains & odors from your plastic storage containers.
  • carpet cleaning, add essential oils if you like.
  • If you traveling add some to a spray bottle with tea tree oil, eucalyptus oil and carry it when you travel, use as deodorizer in your car .
  • clogged drains, because it has enzymes it can actually break down what is clogging the drains.  Pour a bottle of it down the drain, let it sit overnight and run hot water thru.  The enzymes are excellent for those like me with a septic tank.

PETS:

litterbox

  • LITTER BOX odor, spray in the litter box.
  • skunk
  • spray directly on pets if they have been skunked, it WILL remove the skunk smell.
  • fleas
  • controls fleas on pets without drying out their skin!

Bottom like is you can toss out your harsh chemical cleaners and I swear this one bottle will clean everything “safely”, yet effectively.  It works great on soap scum on shower doors, just spray and let sit for a bit, and wipes right off no scrubbing needed, and no harsh fumes!

Give it a try….

Healthfully yours,

Why Are We Drawn To Certain Colors?

I have wanted to write about this for quite some time as it never ceases to amaze me how spot on it is with regards to our health.  What I mean by this is most of us are visually drawn to particular colors… We all have our FAVORITE colors that time and time again we reach for when we pick our clothing, jewelry, the colors we decorate our rooms with in our homes.  Truth is there seems to be a direct connection to why certain colors resonate with us and others don’t.

I for one am grateful that God when he created everything around us, that he chose to add color.  I mean think about that for a minute, what if ALL our fruits & vegetables were all the same color, what if all the flowers that grew were ALL the same color, the leaves on the trees, bushes, grass.  Colors do many different things aside from offering distinction and depth when we look at something, they have a soothing effect on our personal/physical state too.

When you connect colors with fruits/vegetables and even your color choices; if you think about what you may have going on either physically from a health/ailment perspective or emotional perspective you may see the connection.  Here’s a chart that I found at http://www.reikimassage.la/chromotherapy.htm

COLOR                                                               BENEFIT

RED ———————————————————Activates our circulatory & nervous systems.

STRONG PINK——————————————Acts as a cleanser, strengthening the veins & arteries

PINK——————————————————–Activates & eliminates impurities from the blood stream

ORANGE————————————————–Energizes & eliminates localized fat. Helps address asthma & bronchitis.

STRONG YELLOW————————————Strengthens the body & acts on internal tissues

YELLOW————————————————-Reactivates & purifies the skin.  Helps with indigestion & bodily distress.

GREEN—————————————————-Acts as a nerve relaxant

STRONG GREEN————————————–Provides anti-infectious, anti-septic & regenerative stimulation

STRONG BLUE—————————————-lubricates joints & articulations.  Helps address infections, stress & nervous tension

BLUE—————————————————stimulates muscles & skin cells, nerves & the circulatory system

INDIGO———————————————–helps address eye inflammation, cataracts, glaucoma, ocular fatigue or nasal bleeds

VIOLET———————————————–relaxes the nerves & lymphatic system.  Addresses inflammations & urinary illness

color healing

What studies have come to realize is that there is a science to using colors to adjust body vibrations to frequencies that result in health & harmony.  Humans need the sun’s light, which is broken into 7 distinct rays, to live.  If there is an imbalance in these colors within our bodies, it can manifest itself in mental or physical distress.  Each color possesses frequencies of a specific vibration & each vibration is related to different physical symptoms.  This is referred to as Chromotherapy  which works on various energy points to help your body re-establish its natural balance.  It accomplishes this via the full spectrum of visible light, each color of which addresses a separate bodily need.

Every single way our body is put together; by design is meant to constantly help us achieve inner & outer balance.  Think about that for a minute.  Our eyes are able to SEE in color, every function carries some sort of electrical impulse for any & everything to work, which in turn carries a vibrational stimulation to it.  Our five senses: See, Hear, Smell, Touch, Taste all work together using ALL  of these principles not just some of them.  Color is a huge participant! Don’t believe me, try living without a variety of colors.  Truth is even folks who are color blind can still see in reduced hues/shades, none sees completely  in black & white.

When you find yourself DRAWN to a particular color family, refer back to the chart description above and see if physically you may be weak.

If you are drawn to reds is there something going on with your circulatory system? Strong pinks, do you have spider veins, or varicose veins?  Oranges do you have lung weakness, and or cellulite issues?

colory therapy

I remember after my mom passed away back in 2005, I never completely understood what “depression” could do to a body physically, I never struggled with depression before and let me tell you what, I lost my appetite, felt like there was a rock in my throat so food didn’t want to go down, I lost a tremendous amount of weight in a very short period of time, my weight landed at 89 lbs. for several months.  I craved straight carrot juice, in fact that was all I could swallow so I drank it all day long.

Without realizing it I began to transform my wardrobe, and began wearing, Greens, yellows, purples (which I was NEVER drawn to ever)  I was always drawn to earth tone colors so for anything purple to end up in my wardrobe was crazy.  I ended up painting the walls in my bedroom at the time to a yellow earth tone.  So looking back I realize that my body was craving the colors it knew would help offer me some visual/vibrational balance.

Truth is most people if they pay attention to any major health scare, or the loss of a loved one, or major life change, like job loss; they will find they probably made major changes in the colors they surrounded themselves with, and particular color of foods they found themselves drawn to, especially if those choices were totally out of their normal routines.

8 colors

I had a patient I was working with who had been attacked in a parking garage while leaving work, she had been beaten and raped.  It was her husband who pointed out during one of our consultations that she had changed almost her entire wardrobe to where the only colors she wore were Red (which also signifies strength and fire), Pinks, which again is affiliated with strengthening, and cleaning ( trying to put the incident behind her), loud yellows, in fact with the exception of pink, her whole wardrobe switched to almost all LOUD primary colors.  Where her wardrobe typically before consisted of blacks, tans and very light colored neutral clothing.  Her husband mentioned it because he felt she was just using the “spending” as a diversion.  What I suggested was it was her inner self crying out and wanting to send out the signal of STRENGTH & PURGING.  I also recommended she take some self-defense classes.

Truth is we all subconsciously make these changes and most of us just don’t pay much attention to the “why” we changed what we were drawn too.

chromotherapy

I thought this was something interesting and fun to post about.  I sure would LOVE some feedback on this one if any of you have ever wondered why in what seems an all of the sudden moment you made major color changes in your lives, either through wardrobe, or how you decorated your home, can even come down to an inert longing to change the color car you drive.  This is cool stuff….

Until next time…. Stay healthy my friends!!!!

Can We Protect The Pancreas?

pancreas

Moving on forward through the endocrine system, we roll up on a gland lots of folks are familiar with which is the Pancreas!  Hearing about Type I and Type II diabetes and the lives it touches is sadly becoming common place. What is also beginning to go beyond common place is the amount of high sugary foods a single person consumes in any given day !

____________________________________________________________________________________

So where can we find this important part of our endocrine system?  It’s located towards the back of our abdomen behind our stomach.

This gland is the most active gland in our entire digestive system.  According to Dr. N.W. Walker D. Sc. “It produces substances in the form of digestive juices of several different kinds at one and the same time, each to process the various elements contained in the food we eat.  When we eat raw vegetables & fruits, the functions of the pancreas are at their best.  They have virtually no splitting of molecules to do, merely assisting the atoms & molecules to separate so they can be readily collected by the blood & lymph streams & quickly utilized by the glands, cells & tissues throughout the body.

When we eat starches, sugar & meat foods, the pancreas has to do more than its normal work.  Starches cannot be digested as such, but must be converted into primary or chemical sugars.  The pancreas must not only furnish the digestive juices for these sugars but must also help to do the necessary work of conversion or breaking down of the starches.  This extra work is what eventually may develop into diabetes.

When we eat meat, fish or fowl, we cannot use either the concentrated protein or the amino acids that compose it as such.  They must all be reduced to the atoms composing them so that the body may reorganize these atoms to build its own amino acids & proteins.  The pancreas does most of this conversion work, furnishing the digestive juices for the purpose.  As this involves considerable work, it not only overworks the pancreas, but it also generates large quantities of uric acid in the system.

Fats contained in the food we eat, must be converted into glycerin, and the pancreas also furnishes the digestive juices for this purpose.

As the pancreas has so much work to do for us under even the most favorable circumstances, it is obvious that to overwork it just because we choose to eat food & drink beverages that do actual harm, does not make sense.  On the contrary, we should consider this angle of our appetites & desires seriously & with common sense.” (N.W. Sc., Become Younger n.d.)

HYPOGLYCEMIA (LOW BLOOD SUGAR)

Many folks struggle with a condition referred to as hypoglycemia which is when their blood sugar is abnormally low.  Reactive hypoglycemia occurs when blood sugar drops to low levels 2-5 hrs. after eating a meal.  Symptoms of reactive hypoglycemia include sweating, tremors, rapid heartbeat, anxiety & hunger.  Most often, this results from the over secretion of insulin by the pancreas. Insulin facilitates the transport of glucose from our blood into the cells, especially those of muscle & fatty tissue, & causes glucose to be synthesized in our liver.  If the pancreas is not functioning as it should, normal carbohydrate metabolism is impossible.  As the blood sugar then drops, stress hormones like adrenaline & cortisol kick in at high levels to prevent the blood sugar from dropping to fast.

Another type of hypoglycemia is known as fasting hypoglycemia. Meaning this happens as a result of not having food for 8 or more hours (typically, for some the effects can happen after 6 hours).  They symptoms are often more sever than those of reactive hypoglycemia & can include seizures, loss of consciousness, and a loss of mental acuity.  Liver disease generally contributes to this type of hypoglycemia too.

Someone with hypoglycemia may display any or all of the following symptoms:

  • fatigue
  • dizziness
  • heart palpitations
  • nausea
  • blurred vision
  • inability to concentrate
  • light headedness
  • headache
  • irritable, fainting spells
  • depression
  • nervousness
  • anxiety
  • cravings for sweets
  • confusion
  • night sweats,
  • weakness in legs
  • swollen feet
  • feeling tight in the chest
  • constant hunger
  • pain in various parts of the body especially the eyes
  • nervous habits
  • mental disturbances
  • insomnia

If the blood sugar levels drop below 40 mg of glucose per 100CC of blood (80-100 is considered normal), the person can actually become unconscious.  Typically someone with hypoglycemia can become very aggressive & lose their temper easily.  Any or all of these symptoms can occur a few hours after eating sweets or even fats.  The onset & severity of symptoms are pretty much directly related to the length of time since the last meal was eaten& the type of of foods that meal contained.

DIETARY HABITS

More & more peeps today are realizing and being diagnosed with this condition, due to poor dietary habits that include eating large amounts of simple carbohydrates, too much sugary foods, alcohol, caffeine & soda & they are not eating near enough complex carbohydrates.  High levels of stress also can contribute as high amounts of cortisol production also make the fat cells more insulin resistant.

Lots of folks will say they inherited their low blood sugar issue, but most often it is precipitated by a diet that has been overloaded for years with too many of the foods I talked about above.  This is referred to as functional hypoglycemia.  There are other imbalances that can also contribute to hypoglycemia like:

  • adrenal insufficiency
  • stomach surgery
  • thyroid disorders
  • pituitary disorders,
  • kidney disease
  • pancreatitis
  • candidiasis
  • smoking
  • large amounts of caffeine

WHAT SHOULD YOU REMOVE FROM YOUR DIET IF YOU KNOW YOU STRUGGLE WITH PANCREA ISSUES?

I’d remove alcohol, canned & packaged foods, refined & processed foods, dried fruits, table salt, white sugar, saturated fats, sodas and anything made with white refined flours.  Also avoid foods that contain artificial colors or preservatives.

Reduce fatty foods like bacon, lunchmeats, fried foods, gravies, ham, sausage or dairy products (exception would be low-fat soured/fermented products)

Instead you want to be eating a diet that is high in fiber & include large amounts of vegetables, especially broccoli, carrots, artichokes, raw spinach, squash & string beans.  Vegetables should be eaten raw or steamed.  Also eat beans, brown rice, lentils, oats, oat bran, Yukon gold potatoes, tofu, and fruits, especially apples, apricots, avocados, cantaloupes, grapefruits, lemons.

For your protein choices, I’d suggest low fat cottage cheese with some flax oil added, fish, whole grains, kefir, raw nuts, turkey, chicken.

Stop skipping meals and get in the habit of eating 6-8 smaller meals through out the day. The other mistake we make is we are in the habit of drinking liquids with our meals which dilute the digestive fluids, drink some liquid before you sit down to eat, and wait about 30-35 mins. after eating (if you can) before you drink anything.

_________________________________________________________________________________________

Are there herbs & particular supplements that can be helpful for supporting the pancreas…. absolutely, however, in this case I especially would as a practitioner prefer to have done a consultation/appointment before recommending any nutritional/orthomolecular support.  The one thing I don’t want is for people to think if I just take some herbs/supplements it will neutralize the “bad-food” choices and life goes on as usual.

I cannot tell you how many people I have worked with who use insulin and/or oral meds and rely on those to keep things in what they believe to be “check” while they continue to eat in ways that are not contributing in positive ways.

So if you are looking for a more holistic/nutritional way to support the health of your pancreas, I’d be honored to embark on that journey together.  You can go to http://www.jodibarnett758.com and click on services.

Till next time, which we will be talking about the Adrenal glands, stay healthy my friends!

Walking Through Your Endocrine System…

thymus gland

I’m continuing through the explanation of your endocrine system which leads us to the THYMUS gland…

This gland is made up of two identical lobes and it is located anatomically in front of the heart and behind the sternum.  Histologically, each lobe of the thymus can be divided into a central medulla and a peripheral cortex which is surrounded by an outer capsule.

Doctor Norman Walker Sc., in his book Become Younger; had an interesting take on what the role and responsibility of the thymus gland and how it affects who we become. Which is why I chose to include it in this post.

“This glands function is able to change during our different stages of growth and age.  From Infant up to the age of about 18 months, this gland is what is responsible for breaking down the casein and other elements in mother’s milk, which enables the body to assimilate and utilize the milk or its equivalent.  After 18 months of age it undergoes functional changes of a remarkable nature.  Until puberty and the beginning of adolescence the thymus gland is involved in the development of the sex glands.

As we enter into adolescence, it becomes an important factor in the higher and broader expansion of one’s character and emotions.  If the activity of the thymus in the development of the sex glands has not abated at this time, the individual keeps growing until he is taller than average.  On the other hand, if the sex glands develop too soon, and the thymus is diverted too fast to the next change in its activity, the individual ceases to grow and remains below the average height.

Also in adolescence, the thymus acts as a balance between the higher and lower instincts.  It is then controlled by the will, by the mind and by the desires of the individual, until maturity is reached.  This period is the most critical in everybody’s zone of development.  Therefore, what we are exposed to mentally during this period is beyond important.  To an extent it depends on the severity of the discipline applied to the individual.  It is the foundation upon which the future integrity and honesty of the individual is based.  If he is allowed to go about his way of life, unbridled, undisciplined and uncontrolled, the thymus gland will become flabby in texture and in years to come he will find himself on the lower, if not the lowest, plane of consciousness.  Could this account for so many adults today who struggle with low levels of self-esteem?

At this period in life the thymus works in close relation with the pineal gland, the spiritual gland  When discipline is slack or lacking we find youngsters gravitating toward juvenile delinquency, hoodlumism and crime.  To develop the character, integrity and honesty of future generations, parents must come to realize that children of all ages, NEED affection and understanding, as well as the right kind of nourishment.  The development of these two highly important character building glands, the thymus and the pineal, rest entirely in the hands of the parents.  When children and adolescents grow into dependable and honorable citizens even though they were allowed to grow up without guidance, they have done so in spite of lack of discipline and guidance and because of an inherent higher intelligence than that of their parents.”

We also know that the thymus plays an important role in our health working in tandem with the immune system especially during the adolescence years.  As we age the thymus gland begins to shrink in size, I believe this occurs because our immune system works from memory once it has done battle with specific virus’s and germs that it’s contribution is not needed near as much as during our growing years. However, it is still an important gland as we age therefore incorporating some much needed support is encouraged!

The thymus gland is responsible for manufacturing T lymphocytes (T cells) which are a critical component of our immune system.

______________________________________________________________________________________________

Are there remedies in nature that we can use to help strengthen and support our thymus gland?  I believe there definitely are:

  • Arginine  (click here to purchase) retards the growth of tumors and cancer by enhancing our immune function.  It increases the size and activity of the thymus gland, which manufactures T lymphocytes (T cells), crucial components of the immune system.  It is also good for liver issues like cirrhosis and fatty liver because it aids in liver detox by neutralizing the ammonia.  It may also reduce the effects of chronic alcohol toxicity. (I recommend taking an amino acid supplement that offers a balance of all the amino acids when it comes to needing to supplement L-Arginine)  Food sources of L-Arginine include: carob, coconut, gelatin, oats, peanuts, soybeans, walnuts, wheat and wheat germ.
  • Barley grass (click here to purchase) contains small amounts of calcium, iron all the essential amino acids, chlorophyll, flavonoids, vitamin B12, vitamin C, and is loaded with many minerals, plus enzymes.  This food heals stomach, duodenal, and colon disorders as well as pancreatitis, and is a good and effective anti-inflammatory. (click here to purchase in a combination powder for smoothies, great way to get into the kiddo’s)
  • Black Current Oil (click here to purchase) Black Currant Oil contains gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) along with other important polyunsaturated fatty acids, including linoleic acid and alpha-linolenic acid. Fatty acids are involved in many bodily functions, such as maintaining body temperature, insulating nerves, cushioning and protecting tissues and creating energy. These essential fatty acids are precursors of prostaglandins, which must be present for functions involved with blood vessels, maintaining arterial pressure already within the normal range, metabolizing dietary cholesterol, activating T-lymphocytes, protecting against platelet aggregation and other functions.
  • Echinacea Purpurea (click here to purchase) Active compounds in echinacea include polysaccharides, glycoproteins, alkamides, volatile oils and flavonoids. Several laboratory and animal studies suggest that echinacea contains active substances that enhance the activity of the immune system, have antioxidant activity and help support a healthy inflammation response.
  • Vitamin A& D (click here to purchase) Vitamin A is essential for maintaining good vision and promoting normal growth. It is necessary for the health of epithelial cells and is required for the digestion of protein. Vitamin A is essential for lactation, reproduction and the formation of steroid hormones. It is used to form the cells lining the digestive, respiratory, reproductive and urinary tracts and in all tissue linings of the body. Vitamin A is best absorbed when taken with oil or fat. It occurs in animal tissues as retinol but in plants as carotene, a precursor of vitamin A.
Vitamin D works synergistically with vitamin A. It plays a role in absorbing and regulating calcium and phosphorus. This vitamin helps the body synthesize protein. It is vital to the health of the nervous system and kidneys.
  • Zinc (click here to purchase) This is one of the most over looked minerals when it comes to folks supporting their immune system. The trace mineral zinc is involved in hundreds of important functions in the body, including sugar metabolism, DNA formation, protein metabolism and energy production. It is also needed for the growth and development of bones. Pregnant and lactating women require extra zinc. More zinc is found in the body than any other trace element except for iron. Relatively large amounts are found in bone and muscle. It’s also prevalent in the prostate and retina.

Eating healthy and including more fruits and vegetables into your daily routine as well as a variety of raw nuts, beans, whole grains and lower animal meat consumption is a wonderful way to improve the over all health of our endocrine system as a collective whole.

Stay tuned because the next stop in the story of our endocrine system will be the  Pancreas.

Health Lays In Our Neck?

In continuing on walking you through the importance of your Endocrine System; we come upon the Thyroid & Para-Thyroid glands. Which is the next stop realizing I’m working my way from the top down in the body.

thyroid

The thyroid gland is located in the lower front part of the neck and is shaped like a butterfly.  It produces the hormones thyroxine & triiodothyronine.

This gland is one that most folks are familiar with, & we are seeing more & more people struggling with “hypo or Hyper” performing thyroid glands.  Our diets are so void of adequate amounts of iodine that the proper function of this important gland is  evident in many, as well as chemical toxins that inhibit this gland from being able to uptake proper amounts of iodine.

Dr. N.W. Walkers’ description of The Thyroid Gland says, “The thyroid has a strong controlling influence on all the chemical processes which are carried on in the body.  One of the substances which is created by this gland is the hormone known as “thyroxine.”  This is the simplified name compounded from the chemicals composing it, namely: trihydro-triiodo-oxyindol-propionic acid.  Among the elements or ingredients which the thyroid uses to make this hormone is a protein known as casein.  The body manufactures its own casein out of the atoms present in our food, in the same manner that the cow generates the casein in her milk from her feed.  Casein is one of the important components of milk, but when cow’s milk is used by humans of any age, it is not digested properly or completely under any circumstances.  That is the reason why the use of milk not only creates a great amount of mucus in the system, but also has the tendency to disrupt the function of the thyroid gland.  The casein in cow’s milk is 300% more concentrated than that in mother’s milk.  When cow’s milk is pasteurized or cooked by boiling, the casein is changed still worse than in its raw state. (My emphasis here, “we are the ONLY mammals that drink milk past the whelping stage… why?)

Unless the thyroid is able to generate efficiently the thyroxine hormones, many disturbances can result.  Among these is the wasting of body tissues, irritability of the nerves, damage to teeth & muscles, affliction of the sex organs, thickening & coarsening of the skin, dry & unsightly hair, to name but a few.  These conditions are all regulated by the thyroid gland & its thyroxine hormones.” (D.N.SC.n.d.)

There are two malfunctions that can occur with the thyroid gland; one is when it becomes over active also know as Hyperthyroidism.  Phyllis A. Balch, CNC in Prescription for Nutritional Healing describes this disorder; “when the thyroid gland produces too much thyroid hormone, resulting in an overactive metabolic state  All of the body’s processes speed up with this disorder.  Symptoms include nervousness, irritability, a constant feeling of being hot, increased perspiration, insomnia & fatigue, increased frequency of bowel movements, less frequent menstruation & decreased menstrual flow, weakness, hair & weight loss, change in skin thickness, separation of the nails from the nail bed, hand tremors, intolerance of heat, rapid heartbeat, goiter & sometimes, protruding eyeball.

The thyroid gland is the body’s internal thermostat.  It regulates the temperature by secreting two hormones that control how quickly the body burns calories & uses energy.  If the thyroid secretes too much hormone, hyperthyroidism results; too little hormone results in hypothyroidism.”  (Phyllis A. Balch n.d.)

Parathyroid Gland: Don’t hear too much about this gland but it’s important too!

There are 4 glands that are attached to each side of the thyroid gland.  Their function is to regulate the blood calcium levels & regulate calcitonin which is produced in the thyroid gland.  They also influence the lymph system in neutralizing certain types of toxins in the body.  Dr. Norman Walker D.Sc. states that the parathyroid glands” are responsive to the negative emotions, such as worry, anxiety, fear, anger, hatred, jealousy and so on, under which circumstances they excite or stimulate secretion from the Adrenal glands.  Adrenalin, is highly poisonous & affects the whole system when secreted to excess.

The principle function of the parathyroid glands, however, is the regulation of the calcium metabolism, the calcium content of the blood, in tooth & bone formation, & not residual calcium in the tissues.  It is most important to realize that these glands do NOT have the SELECTIVE ability to choose between organic & inorganic calcium.  That is to say that they will take whatever calcium atoms or molecules come along, irrespective of whether they are dead, or vital, live elements.  If our Creator had given them this ability to choose the live & reject the cooked or processed elements, we would have no arthritic victims, we would have marvelous teeth all our lives & no one would have any deformed bones, so long as we ate sufficient raw nourishment.

As it is, the calcium from pasteurized milk & cooked milk products, as well as that from grain & starch foods has become inorganic through the process of heating.  Under these circumstances no matter how much calcium we take into our system by eating these foods or taking calcium in tablet or similar form, the body cannot utilize it constructively without eventual damage to the calcium bearing parts of our system.  We have the proof of this in the swollen calcified joints in arthritis, in the degeneration of the teeth & bone, in impactions in our blood vessels as in tumors, hemorrhoids, varicose veins, high & low blood pressure & of course all the signs of premature old age.

It is necessary to furnish the body with the nourishment rich in organic or vital, live calcium elements which the parathyroid glands can work with to our best advantage.  These elements are found only in the raw vegetables & fruits & their fresh raw juices.

Among the richest calcium food’s, we have carrots, turnips, spinach, dandelion, to name but a few.” (N.W. Walker n.d.)

The biggest mistake I see folks making is in “knowing” that the diets they are consuming on a daily basis are void of the nourishment they require so they are trying to make up for it by swallowing a boat load of pills in the name of healthy.  Now don’t misunderstand me; I use herbs & supplements in my practice and recommend some of them when needed in the nutritional programs for my patient’s, but in the process I am also encouraging them to make major shifts in their lifestyle and dietary habits.

Cleaning out the chemicals that are going to inhibit their thyroids ability to uptake the much needed iodine.  Some of those chemicals:

  • fluoride (in tooth pastes and mouthwashes, and also given in a rinse form at the dentist)
  • chlorine (which is in most city drinking water supplies, and used in swimming pools)

When thinking about hormones, I want you to think parking garages for a minute.  Every hormone produced also has what’s referred to as a hormone receptor sight.  Meaning it has it’s own parking garage with its name plaque on it.  When we have impostors or inhibitors that come on the scene, they can occupy those reserved parking slots which don’t allow for proper hormonal reception to happen.  We see many people who are taking synthetic hormones in an attempt to balance what is imbalanced in the body.  There are some folks who’s thyroid is so iodine starved that taking synthetic hormones may need to be part of their daily routine.  However, they end up believing that their problem is solved once they begin taking them and make ZERO lifestyle changes.

I want folks to begin to realize that medicating any health issue doesn’t solve the on-going imbalance and nutritional deficiency, especially if you don’t make any needed changes.  Remember, the imbalance didn’t just show up because you were an unlucky chap.  We are not created to be “unhealthy”, our body in fact has many checks/balances built in.  When those checks/balances can no longer balance is when we start to see & feel unhealthy.

I don’t recommend supplements & herbs in the same capacity as folks are used to using them. Which for the most part is the same way they use prescriptions. I use them like that of a work out routine designed to strengthen what has become weak with the goal of getting stronger and back to God’s given working order. Not for you to assume that the supplements need to be a part of your daily lifetime intake.  You need to allow your body to rely on what it needs from the fuel you put in your engine, meaning what foods you are eating!

So are they herbal products you can use to help support the thyroid, absolutely.  A few that I highly recommend:

Benefits:
Supports the glandular system
Provides glandular extracts, amino acids, vitamins, enzymes, and phytonutrients
Helps support thyroid function
Supports a healthy metabolism
How It Works:
Thyroid Support is a blend of nutritional and herbal supplements specially designed to nourish the thyroid gland and to support the actions of the thyroid hormones. The thyroid hormones regulate many body functions, including oxygen use, basal metabolic rate, cellular metabolism, growth and development, and body temperature.
Ingredients:
Vitamin B6, zinc, copper, manganese, l-tyrosine, kelp leaves and stems, thyroid substance, nettle leaves, protease blend, pituitary substance and hypothalamus substance.

  • Zinc: ( Click here to purchase this product)
  • The body needs zinc for many functions, with regards to the thyroid, it encourages the thyroid to uptake proper amounts of iodine.

Benefits:
Supports immune function.
Provides 25 mg zinc per tablet.
How It Works:
The trace mineral zinc is involved in hundreds of important functions in the body, including sugar metabolism, DNA formation, protein metabolism and energy production. It is also needed for the growth and development of bones. Pregnant and lactating women require extra zinc. More zinc is found in the body than any other trace element except for iron. Relatively large amounts are found in bone and muscle. It’s also prevalent in the prostate and retina.
Ingredients:
25 mg of zinc (167% of the Daily Value) plus calcium, phosphorus, kelp leaves and stem, thyme leaves and alfalfa aerial parts.

When it comes to the calcium and para-thyroid support, I NEVER recommend a calcium supplement to any of my patients.  I encourage a calcium rich diet which includes plenty of fresh fruits & vegetables on a daily basis and I highly encourage juicing and blended salads (especially for those with digestion weaknesses), but I DO HIGHLY recommend supplementing with :

Magnesium: (click here to purchase product)

The difference between Calcium & magnesium is one of a push me pull me routine.  Meaning, calcium is the mineral that encourages contractions in the body when it comes to muscles (and isn’t every thing in the body with the exception of our teeth & bones a muscular composition?), and Magnesium I refer to as the mineral of movement, it is what relaxes, but it also is what encourages the body to place calcium in the proper places in the body.  So instead of supplementing with calcium, if you want to maintain better calcium levels, #1, CHANGE your diet, and #2 incorporate more magnesium.  It’s of a water soluble nature meaning you won’t overdose on magnesium, if you get more than your body can metabolize (use) it will clean out the pipes (south pole).

Benefits:
Highly bioavailable
Contributes to energy production
Promotes musculoskeletal health
How It Works:
Magnesium is an essential mineral. It is present in more than 300 enzymatic systems where it is crucial for energy production and other metabolic functions. The heart, brain and kidneys cannot function without adequate levels of this nutrient. Magnesium is used in reaction to form Tri Carboxylic Acid (TCA), which aids in the cells’ energy-producing cycle. It is also involved in smooth muscle contractions, affecting the heart, gastrointestinal, urinary and female reproductive tracts.
Ingredients:
Magnesium citrate and magnesium malate.

It is my hope that as I continue to walk you through the endocrine system and explain the importance of each of these glands that you become encouraged to make changes in your diet/lifestyle or course; but that you also begin to understand more of how magnificent your body is with the intricate internal workings that take place every hour of every day.

The next endocrine gland stop will be the Thymus gland….

Thank you for taking the time to read, like and share the articles I post.  You folks are the BEST!

Natures Sunshine, Why I Recommend This Line In My Practice!

As a Practitioner, I am beyond picky when it comes to the products that I recommend to my clients. There needs to be a high level of purity, quality and what is claimed to be in the product NEEDS to be in there at full strength. So one of the product lines I choose and personally use for my family as well is the Nature’s Sunshine line. They have been in business for 45 years, this is a tough industry and there are a whole mess of different supplement/herbal companies out there, things you want to watch for on the labels is things hidden under “natural flavors” because a whole host of non labeled ingredients are hidden there. Artificial colors & dyes, bad guy sugars like sucralose.  You want to choose a supplement/herbal company that offers FULL disclosure on their labels.

I’m going to be posting multiple posts working my way through their product line telling you more about the different products.

5-HTP😦click here for product link)
5HTP
Benefits:
May help regulate appetite, mood and sleep.
Helps the body adapt to stress.
Supports the nervous system.
Provides 35 mg of 5-HTP Power per capsule.
Provides 3 mg vitamin B6 per capsule.
How It Works:

5-Hydroxytryptophan is a precursor to serotonin, an important neurotransmitter that helps regulate appetite, mood and sleep. 5-Hydroxytryptophan is converted into serotonin in the body, which may help elevate mood, assist in controlling hunger and promote restful sleep. 5-HTP Power blends three adaptogenic herbs—eleuthero, ashwaganda and suma—with 5-HTP to help the body adjust to changes. It also contains vitamin B6 and zinc, which support the action of 5-HTP.

Ingredients:
3 mg vitamin B6 (150% of Daily Value), 3 mg zinc (20% of Daily Value), 5-HTP, eleuthero root, ashwagandha root and suma bark.
USAGE:

Hydroxytryptophan is a precursor to serotonin, which is a neurotransmitter that helps regulate our appetite, mood and our sleep. This can be used for helping with depression that involves low serotonin levels. If someone is taking an SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor), 5-HTP can be useful in helping with the side-effects of discontinuing it as 5-HTP will have a similar effect. NEVER discontinue any SSRI medication all at once & always adjust your dosing while being monitored by your prescribing physician.

Folks that have an O blood type find this works well at raising their dopamine levels, which are usually low when O blood types feel depressed. Understand that for some people who find they crave carbs, low serotonin levels can be the contributing factor, and 5-HTP can help reduce those cravings, it assists with sleep issues too, as 5-HTP is converted to serotonin and when its dark, the pineal gland converts the serotonin into melatonin which is a hormone the body naturally produces to induce feeling sleepy.

5-W: (click here for product link)
5-W

Benefits:
Supports the female glandular and reproductive systems.
May help tone and strengthen the uterus.
Is recommended for the last five weeks of pregnancy.
How It Works:
This formula contains natural minerals found in plants, which support vitality and healthy tissue growth. Herbs in this formula help support the female reproductive system by helping to tone the uterus and supporting circulation.
Ingredients:
Black cohosh root, squawvine whole plant, dong quai root, butcher’s broom root and red raspberry leaves

Usage:
This formula should only be used during the last 5 weeks of pregnancy to help induce labor and make childbirth easier. It promotes uterine contractions, tones the uterus and helps improve circulation.

HORMONAL INDUCED HEADACHES:

For gals who struggle with headaches connected with their cycles this formula has proven helpful as well as those vasoconstrictive headaches are typically hormonally induced.
If your headaches are migraine headaches this is not the formula for you, as black cohosh can exacerbate vasodilative migraine headaches. So working with a Doctor of Naturopathy, or Midwife who understands herbs is recommended!

7-KETO: (click here for product link)
7-Keto

Benefits:
Stimulates thyroid production.
Supports weight management goals.
Supports the immune system.
How It Works:

7-Keto is a safe, natural metabolite of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). Supplementing with 7-Keto may increase the production of T3, a thyroid hormone. The thyroid hormones play a role in determining the body’s basal metabolic rate. 7-Keto also supports the body’s immune system efforts by enhancing the function of white blood cells. It can also help the body’s efforts to maintain overall health. It is important to note that, unlike other metabolites of DHEA, 7-Keto is not converted to sex hormones (either androgens or estrogens).

Ingredients:

7-Keto and chickweed leaf extract.
7-Keto is a trademark of Humanetics Corp., Patent no. 5,296,481.

WEIGHT-LOSS:
This supplement stimulates the conversion of T4, which is the inactive form of our thyroid hormone, to T3 which is the active form. So this increases the metabolic rate and causes the body to burn fat at an accelerated rate. Clinical trials also showed this supplement to enhance the immune system, increase energy, and even enhance ones memory. Another benefit is 7-Keto does NOT convert into the sex steroids, of testosterone and estrogen, as does DHEA, so it may provide some of the same benefits as DHEA, but without the hormonal side effects.

This is my go to choice for my ladies who may be rolling into menopause and have begun to pick up some extra pounds as a result, using DHEA if they are already experiencing “hot-flashes”, 7-Keto won’t encourage those, where some gals trying to use DHEA  find that it can encourage “hot-flashes.”

ADAPTAMAX: (click here for product link)

adaptamax

Benefits:
Supports the immune system.
Provides energy to overcome stress.

Adaptogens help the body buffer the effects of stress and adapt to stressful situations. AdaptaMax’s adaptogenic strength comes from rhodiola, eleuthero, Korean ginseng, ashwaganda, rosemary, gynostemma and schizandra. Together these herbs help the body cope with a variety of stressful conditions, including stress on the immune system, fatigue and aging. They fight oxidative cellular damage, energize the body, support positive mood and stimulate the immune system. Other ingredients in this formula include nutrient-rich, immune-supporting herbs like astragalus, reishi mushroom, suma and ginkgo—to fortify the immune system and help protect the body from the consequences of stress. Alfalfa, kelp, chromium and a fruit and vegetable base provide nutrients to nourish the body’s cells. All told, AdaptaMax is a complete, energizing formula.

(this is a patented formula registered to NSP, so you won’t find this formulation anywhere else)

ADRENAL EXHAUSTION/STRESS:

When you see an herbal product that states it’s an adaptagenic, that means it helps the body deal better with stress. It helps with fatigue, immune weakness, & symptoms of aging brought on by excessive stress. This formula works best with A blood types. Blood type O does better with Suma as their adaptagenic formula. This blend also has antioxidant properties.

  • Conditions you may want to use this to support:
  • Adrenal exhaustion, weakness or burnout,
  • Anxiety (panic attacks),
  • Fatigue, Stress (foggy thinking)

ADRENAL SUPPORT: (Click here for product link)

adrenal support

Benefits:
Helps support adrenal function
Supports body’s ability to regulate occasional stress
Supports the glandular and nervous systems
Formulated with a unique adrenal glandular substance plus a synergistic blend of vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and adaptagens

How It Works:

Certain hormones in the body—called stress hormones—prepare the body to deal with stressful situations by increasing the heart rate and the force of contraction and blood flow to the heart, liver, and to skeletal and adipose tissue. These stress hormones are produced and regulated by the adrenal glands. They also dilate airways to the lungs and increase blood levels of glucose and fatty acids. The adrenal hormones and their functions are linked to virtually all of the body systems. Thus, many physiological processes and bodily functions, including cardiovascular health, sex drive, pH balance, skin conditions, energy levels, mood and overall psychological outlook often correlate to adrenal gland function. Adrenal Support is a synergistic blend of vitamins, minerals, enzymes and adaptogenic herbs specially formulated to nourish and strengthen the adrenal glands and to promote glandular secretion.

Ingredients:

25 mg vitamin C (42% Daily Value), 10 mg thiamin (667% DV), 5 mg riboflavin (294% DV), 5 mg vitamin B6 (250% DV), 45 mg pantothenic acid (450% DV), 10 mg magnesium (3% DV), 5 mg zinc (33% DV), 5 mg potassium, bovine adrenal substance, schisandra fruit, borage seed oil, licorice root and protease blend.

USAGE:
I use this product because it works wonderful for treating adrenal weakness. It helps strengthen the adrenals and increases energy and stamina. It helps to maintain blood sugar levels and blood pressure fluations due to stress.

When someone is struggling with adrenal weakness they usually are dealing with the symptoms of:

  • hypoglycemia
  • fatigue
  • cravings for sweets & alcohol
  • depression
  • poor digestion
  • poor bowel movements

I typically only have clients use this product in 3 month increments to rebuild severely depleted adrenals.  Afterwards, I switch them to Nervous Fatigue Formula, Suma Combination or Energ-V.

ALFALFA: (click here for product link)

alfalfa

Benefits:
Provides nutrients and trace minerals.
How It Works:
Alfalfa has been cultivated for over 2,000 years as a nutritive food for people and livestock. The Spanish used it for a variety of health issues. Modern herbalists consider it very nutritive and use it to help build the blood. Alfalfa’s roots grow deep, providing the plant with a rich source of nutrients not always found at the ground’s surface.
Ingredients:
Alfalfa aerial parts.

This is one of my favorite go to herbs, this baby right here is the “KING OF HERBS” and has been around and in use since way back when.  Alfalfa is a super rich source of vitamins, minerals, amino acid and other nutrients especially trace minerals.

The roots grow anywhere from 30-60 feet deep so the plant picks up minerals and water other plants can’t reach.

Because it is rich in trace minerals and amino acids it is a valuable supplement for the pituitary gland and this gland is adversely affected when its running low on trace minerals and amino acids.

  • It is a mild blood cleaner
  • helpful for arthritis as it’s a natural blood thinner
  • it stimulates poor appetite
  • morning sickness
  • rich breast milk
  • natural blood thinner (with out side-effects)

when you mix this in a tea with some red raspberry leaf it’s great for gals with morning sickness.  I have my pregnant mom’s taking this in conjunction with liquid chlorophyll throughout their pregnancy and have them discontinue the last month of pregnancy due to the fact that it does thin the blood.  But taking after pregnancy also brings in rich mothers milk.

ALGIN: (click here for product link)

algin

 Benefits:
Supports the intestinal system.
May absorb heavy metal ions.
Encourages normal elimination
How It Works:
Sodium alginate, an important part of the kelp plant, is mucilaginous and gels in water. Many people use it as a nutritional supplement supportive of the intestinal system. Its bulking action encourages normal eliminative function.
Ingredients:
Sodium alginate.

This is another one of my favorites because it falls in the category of “mucilage”, which means it absorbs toxins in our digestive tract. Like Heavy Metals. I always recommend it be used in conjunction with Heavy Metal Detox. (click here for product linkheavy metal detox

Conditions I use this for:

  • high cholesterol
  • heavy metal issues
  • radiation sickness
  • help to detox from vaccines

One thing to keep in mind is that mucilaginous herbs like align absorbs nutrients too.  So make sure there is a window between taking the align and your vitamins/minerals by about 1 hour.  Drink LOTS of water as this is a fiber and without enough liquid intake it may cause binding with the colon.
