What Happens To The Food You Eat?

intestinesThe easiest analogy I can put forth would be comparing one’s body to that of a chemical engine, it accepts what one eats as fuel.  Sometimes it decides some of the fuel is unacceptable by discarding it by throwing it back up, or for some shooting it through quickly and sending it out the south pole region.  Sometimes, it will decide to store it in the fat cells to cushion the body against leaner times; and some it will gratefully use to fire its countless tiny cell furnaces after it applies some complex biochemical treatment.

If the energy output in the food one recently fed their engine is nutritionally deficient, the body will insist you send more through hunger triggers and one has the urge to raid the kitchen again. Which is why you can devour an entire bag of potato chips and still feel hungry, nutritionally they were empty!

If any of you reading have ever watched one of those survival shows, like “Naked and Afraid”, the people on the show sometimes  will go for the full 21 days with nothing more than water, and they always tell at the end of the show how much weight each one lost.  During a survival mode such as that; the body will use up the fat deposits first to feed the engine, then it will turn to breaking down muscle tissue, (eating itself).  When folks start getting sick and notice their body is breaking down is when the their engine has been being fed the wrong kind of fuel too many times, leaving the body to have to compensate with that which the body has stored.

Folks, our digestive system is basically a chemical refinery that is able to manufacture its own fuels and is capable of delivering energy from those raw materials: the proteins, fats, carbohydrates (that are broken down into starches and sugars), vitamins and minerals.  This whole process of digestion takes place the minute we send food into our mouth and down the esophagus into the stomach.

When we chew our food and it’s mixed with our saliva digestion begins.  Our digestive system is like that of a conveyor belt, there are various stations where other chemicals are contributed to convert the food/fuel so our engines can use it by breaking down, diluting and dissolving as well as adding some chemicals and even removing others.

When the food mixes with our saliva which is the first set of digestive enzymes the food comes into contact with, these enzymes are special protein molecules that act as “catalysts” the definition of catalysts: a substance that increases the rate of a chemical reaction without itself undergoing any permanent chemical change. So the job of these catalysts /Enzymes is to assist the body/engine in metabolizing, which is the what the body does to convert this fuel into energy.  The enzymes our body produces are called the spark plugs of life, we cannot process a single morsel of any food without them. Yet, when we are eating foods that are loaded with chemical preservatives or “enzyme inhibitors”, the very structure  of our enzymes that the body produces can be altered, which is why we see so many folks struggling with digestive issues.

The Stomach secretions, the enzymes from the pancreas, the liver and the glands lining the small intestines all act on the passing food.  As the food has been touched by the actions of these enzymes and ferments then the other catalytic agents of reduction in the mouth and stomach is now spread out, as it were, upon a huge carpet.  This carpet area is the lining of our small intestines, which is about 26 feet long and is covered with millions of villi, which are like little fingers that are constantly moving back and forth, they are sticking out from the lining of the small intestine.

So when we eat something that has an irritating effect, the bowel is going to either try to get rid of it quickly which we experience as diarrhea, or it puts a spastic clamp on the intestines to keep the irritating substances from moving which we experience as constipation.

This rich lining of delicate sensitive cells is our body’s first defense level, it fights the good fight against the absorption of unnatural and detrimental food elements.  Yet repeated absorption of these elements produces over time inflammation and even destruction of our delicate lining.  That is when the blood in these villi become so overcharged with toxic elements that elements of it is allowed to enter into the blood stream.

So, as these digested food particles are spread over our intestinal carpet to be absorbed, two important issues present themselves:  what is the quality of the food and the quantity?

If we overeat, that makes it difficult to digest, and too much is saved/absorbed.  The villi have no regulating ability to indicate how much to absorb.  This contributes to folks being overweight or they feel sick.

Typically when we sit down for a meal, we feast on a variety of foods.  Understanding that the way our body has to break down different elements in our foods, realizing that when we throw to many different foods in the same meal, can result in incomplete digestion.  How does that FEEL:

*bloating

*feeling full for hours

*sleepy after eating

When clients come to me with digestive issues, even food sensitivities, what ends up happening is we have to simplify their diet to reduce the work load on their digestive system.

Cells called small lymphocytes, carry food needed for growth and reproduction of our body’s cells.  This food is protein in nature, but before it can be used by the body’s cells, an iodine value must be added to it by the thyroid gland. The body is so incredibly amazing, the villi that line the small intestine have two sets of vessels, they have blood vessels and lymph vessels.  These lymph vessels are what transport lymphocytes and other white blood cells.  So during digestion it requires a large amount of lymphocytes, these enter the lymph vessels, and so the body will have enough available, God placed the largest organ for manufacture of these lymphocytes close to the small intestine.  That would be the spleen, whose function is to send armies of lymphocytes to the villi after we eat.

We hear about the importance of “amino acids”, and how they are building blocks in our body.  Well, as the lymphocytes are being pushed through these lymph channels of our villi, they absorb amino acids, which are the digested form of proteins.  They then get circulated toward a large duct, that would be the thoracic duct, which moves them to the subclavian vein into which the thoracic duct empties, just above the point where the secretion that comes from the thyroid gland is released into the same vein.  Now, TELL me this isn’t SUPER COOL……this all takes place and we don’t see it, we don’t feel it, but we can’t live without these functions!

It’s at this point that the lymphocytes are exposed to the iodine from the thyroid which “iodizes” their amino acids, which is what we need for cell growth and reproduction.  These lymphocytes then circulate in the blood vessels or lymph vessels, or sometimes cut right through the tissues to a needed location.  So after this cycle occurs these lymphocytes return to the spleen, where they either get disintegrated or are sent on again to the villi to cycle again.

This concept of digestion was introduced and published in the December, 1928, Journal of Laboratory and Clinical Medicine.

I impress on my clients who are parents, WHAT you feed your children is important! During adolescent years lymphocytes are needed in larger than normal amounts, the stages of growth and repair that takes place during childhood and until the end of adolescence is what sets the very foundation of health as our kiddo’s enter adulthood. During this period God has supplied an extra lymphocyte-manufacturing center which would be the thymus gland, which begins to shrink after adolescence.  The thymus is by the thyroid so that iodine is readily available.  So realize that the foundation of our children’s health future should be supplied with the very best building material we can supply.  Fast food, like chicken nuggets, and French fries and soda, and boat loads of refined sugary foods; isn’t going to make that happen.

CARBOHYDRATES:

When we eat carbs and complex sugars our digestive system reduces those to simple glucose, which the blood vessels of the villi absorb and that glucose gets burned directly in our muscles.  The body receives its muscular energy and heat from this.  Fats are also combustible, but they usually burn better with the carbohydrate flame.  (I’ll touch more on this on a later post)

EMOTIONS:

Gut and psychology go together.  How one “feels” is really dependent on how your food processor (digestion system) is processing.   If we pay attention and “watch” people, take a holiday meal, some families laugh at the fact that when their whole family gets together, many times someone causes an uproar.  If you take notice most of that tends to happen AFTER the meal has been eaten.   That’s when emotions run high.  Watch the kiddo’s at a holiday function, after the sweets are served up, the kids get hyper, weepy, or can toss some fits.  What we eat makes us who we are, and our emotions are predicated on what takes place in the gut.  I’ll dig deeper on that in a different post.

Revelation: You Can Be Healthy

healthy%20living%20logo%20a

A little practitioner back ground on “ME”… I have never considered myself to be any sort of specialist! Nope… what I have come to realize is that folks who seek out my services are usually disappointed in allopathic medical routes – especially when the round after round of prescriptions that are recommended appear to merely mask their symptoms imprisoned in their body. They seek me out for dietary reform, usually because they have found out that food has something to do with their issues and physical symptoms.  The light bulb starts to burn brighter as they realize that whatever illness or health issue they are battling didn’t just decide that hey, Suzie Whatsherface looks like a good person to set up house keeping inside of, they have realized something that has been occurring  on a consistent basis had to have some sort of role to play in why they feel like they feel or why they are sick!

Many seek me out with noble intentions, willing to follow some nutritional advice and willing to try to experience better health through dietary and lifestyle changes.  Those folks are for obvious reasons easier to work with.

However, the average peep is more reluctant to change the diet routine they have followed all their lives.  They are not aware that nearly all bad food habits are actually “stimulation habits” that is, the body has almost automatically found out what makes it feel better for a mere half hour or so and what will mask the depression and fatigue for a short blink of time.  Some folks will eat a good amount of salt, others reach for their meat washed down with their choice of alcoholic beverages, while others well their go-to relief food of choice is sweets or a combo of foods that will prove to add to their actual health issues, not realizing that some of those very cravings are pointing to various nutrient issues that their bodies are actually deficient in.

Then when I take away their stimulation , they feel weak and depressed, they may get headaches and/or other unpleasant physical side-effects for a while as their body adjusts to the new food intake routine and the toxic overload is being taken to the proverbial curb.  I actually had a client who sent me an email about 4 days into their program and the body of the email read only this:  I LOVE MY PRACTITIONER, I LOVE MY NUTRITIONIST, I HATE THIS FOOD ROUTINE! with a bunch of emoji hearts to follow.  Sometimes, it’s a love/hate relationship…  I try to warn my clients that some not so pleasant symptoms can jump to the forefront.  This is usually that make or break moment as some clients decide that this lifestyle/nutritional reform just isn’t their cup of tea.  They came for immediate relief and instead initially feel worse. So they return to their stimulation habits.  It is a tragic decision, yet its one I cannot fight!

The other part of what I offer when I work with someone is I start them on the road called “understanding how MY body actually works”.  Some may ask questions, but most don’t seek to understand the inner workings, and  the truth is most practitioners  in their practices deal day in and day out with folks who are unthinking and who treat their bodies – which I believe to be the most priceless of ones possessions, with about the same reckless abandon of a toddler breaking in a new toy.  I ran across an old article from Life magazine from (December 7, 1962) that said:

“The body… runs on food and oxygen much as an auto runs on gasoline and oxygen. But right there the comparison ends. If it is not to stall or sputter, the auto must be fed exactly what it needs just when it needs it.  The body’s fuel system, on the other hand, is subject to the whimsical tastes and cravings of its proprietor.  It can handle extra food when it is already full and can go without when it is empty. And it must tolerate surprise doses of gin, smoke and really hot chili.  It does this heroic job remarkable well… Though people often think of the stomach as a finicky, delicate organ, it is actually so rugged it can tolerate virtually anything that is not downright poisonous or corrosive.”

I laughed out loud in the library when I read this because I thought WOW, this is true, our digestive system is always accommodating, and can tolerate many strange and foreign things we throw down the hatch. Yet sooner or later folks, depending on its present state and hereditary health factors, guess what?  IT BREAKS DOWN! We welcome almost with open arms dis-ease and illness.  The body becomes invaded through our fuel processing system as well as its transportation system through the digestive channel, which when our digestive system (food processor) breaks down we have issues.  When the fuel pump (heart) is impaired, heart disease stakes its rightful claim.  If the digestive system is overloaded too long with improper food residues, the coronary arteries get hard and a heart attack can sign its name in our guest book.  If the air you breathe is polluted, you get the additional signature in the guest book called respiratory issues.  If the water you drink is loaded with chlorine and fluorine, your body can be irritated by the caustic action, that also interferes with how one’s thyroid is able to uptake proper amounts of iodine it needs.  If your teeth are neglected, many suffer malnutrition because truth be told you can’t eat a wide range of healthy foods if you cannot “CHEW” it properly so one has to avoid certain hard to chew foods.

The other hard to swallow truth is even with an abundance of GOOD foods to choose from at all grocery stores, most folks rarely choose those.  They choose pre-cooked in a box breakfast foods, cookies, donuts, lets swallow those with a hot cup of java to get our morning rolling, or let’s have some white bread and toss in some thick gravy to stick to the ribs, ummmmmmm these are the breakfasts of champions?  If we are going to choose to exist on lifeless, over processed, insecticide sprayed foods: saturated with chemicals, then add coffee, tea, alcohol, chocolate, sweetened carbonated drinks, medicate an exhausted system with “ENERGY” drinks that are pure chemicals too, and we get MAD when we are told we have a disease, or any other serious health issue.  We act like we didn’t deserve it, yet if we hit replay and go back over the use and abuse so to speak, and if we are willing to be honest with ourselves; our choices all but invited in the issue. The truth is if we treated our cars like most do their bodies, their cars would be in the junk yard.

I wrote another piece called “Your body: A do it yourself repair shop”, but if your repair shop (body) doesn’t have the proper tools to work with why are you shocked that NO work has been done?  The truth is this isn’t something that has just popped on the scene in the past 50 yrs. either, A Frenchman, Constantin Volney, observed the diet of farmers in New England 164 years ago, He termed the following menu “deplorable”:

“In the morning at breakfast they douse their stomachs with a quart of hot water impregnated with tea or so slightly with coffee that it is mere colored water; and they could swallow almost without thinking hot bread half-baked, toast soaked in butter, cheese of the fattest kind, slices of salt or hung beef, ham, etc., all of which is nearly insoluble. At dinner they have boiled pastes under the name of puddings, and their sauces even for roast beef are melted butter; then potatoes and turnips swimming in hog’s lard, butter or fat.  Under the name of pie or pudding, their pastry is nothing but a greasy paste, never sufficiently baked.”

Guess what the top job in that era was; who were the folks making the big bucks?… Those that made dentures, yep false teeth, and they were skillfully made from hickory wood, and they are PRIZED today by antique collectors, which cracks me up, not sure why someone wants a set of wooden false teeth hickory wood or not sitting on a shelf as a trinket, folks are unique I suppose.

One of mans most valuable possession has been his body’s ability to repair itself. Even animals have that built-in button for survival.  Ever seen your dog go outside and eat grass? How about the wounded cat that licks its wounds clean; the lice-infested bird that wallows in dust?  This primitive instinct, is at the root of all the healing arts; it is as ancient as life itself, as useful to the first folks as it is to us today. Why, then, have we forgotten it and left it behind us?

WHY DO WE MEMORIZE USELESS INFORMATION?

I’ve always asked myself this burning question?  How come baseball fans can tell you the last World Series scores, some peeps can remember a poem that they were made to memorize in school as a child.  I can still recite commercial jingles from the 1960’s and 70’s, or I remember School House Rock from Saturday morning cartoons as a child, I still to this day can SING the preamble to the Constitution.  Some of the things we choose to memorize, that in truth is just stuff, it’s not likely being able to blurt out what the final score of the World Series in 1937 is going to prove useful in your everyday life, it may earn ya some bucks if that question comes up and your on the game show Jeopardy .  Yet truth is many are baffled and confused about the own inner workings of their body, and when it’s under attack with pain, and breakdown, they can’t trouble shoot to lead them back to the cause.  I use this analogy with clients all the time, that symptoms are not your enemy, they are your body’s built-in 911 call center, and your dash-board lights are flashing service something, and we ignore it or paste over it with something that will dull the light or better yet pull the fuse in the form of a pain-killer so we don’t feel it anymore, but that doesn’t mean you fixed the issue!

Most don’t take much interest in the inner workings of their body until they get sick, then they begin to study and take a crash course.  We pay attention most of the time to what we see on the outside, the skin, hair, nails, our weight.  I am always amazed when I get clients and by the way; this statement is one I hear frequently.  “I DON’T HAVE TIME TO FEEL LIKE THIS”…. and I have to be honest with them and say well, this didn’t just jump on the scene yesterday, it’s been brewing beneath the surface for quite some time, you chose to ignore the early 911 signs. When you are holding water we call that edema, or you have a boil on the skin somewhere your body is forever fighting a biological batter for survival, that is what it is programmed to do, so these body responses are actually wise, the body’s way of calling for a complete quarantine, a thick barricade of inflammatory tissue to prevent the enemy (microbes or poisons) from spreading.  Comfortable… NO,  Genius, YES!

There is a process, inflammation triggers pain to prevent you from using something that is injured. Ever sprain an ankle? The first thing it does is swell up, then the swelling triggers pain, that’s so you don’t walk on it, but…. we take pain killers, and wrap it up so we can still use it and wonder why it takes so much longer to heal? Oh,, cuz we don’t have time for this….

DISEASE: CLASS 101

To understand disease you need to understand the way the living cell is comprised. Every walking, talking, breathing person on planet earth is composed of more than a trillion cells, and those cells are tremendously complicated in their mechanics.  When the body becomes diseased, its cells turn abnormal in a variety of ways.

There are 2 classes of disease: Infectious which is caused by viruses or bacteria entering into the body; degenerative, caused, in general, by toxic substances manufactured by the disturbed organs themselves or by something foreign in our food or air.  When your body is fighting against any of these, (the wonder of your body “fearfully and wonderfully made,) it’s job at the front line of defense, is to neutralize the offender.

According to Dr. Hans Selye in “The Stress of Life,” “pain, though an unwelcome intruder, serves a useful purpose.  In disease, it is a warning given by nature to enforce rest as an aid to healing.  It is also a warning that we may have suffered an injury.  The nerve endings, receptors, transmit a message along the nerve pathways by electrical impulses to the brain, and we experience pain as a reaction.  A variety of sensory stimuli can trigger pain: chemical; mechanical, such as twisting of a limb or pressure; thermal, as extreme cold, or heat; or electrical.  When there is inflammation because of disease or injury, there is usually a combination of mechanical pressure and chemical irritation.  Pain is always a warning that something is amiss; thus, to the physician, it is one of the most important symptoms of disease.”

Where I tend to differ with others in my field, some believe that certain aches, pains and debilitating health issues are part of our aging process…. I disagree that this is normal and what one should look forward too.  I believe that real health is so much more.  It is achieved by working with the laws of nature; and when we break those laws, we get sick. I don’t believe that being healthy is a certificate you are awarded by being born, I believe that to remain healthy one needs to be taking ACTIVE participation in living as healthy as they can.  If one takes the time to do the research, it’s on the internet, you will find multiple articles that state the American people take more prescription medications and submit their bodies to more surgeries and vaccinations than that of any other country!  Yet next to digestive issues which is what tops the charts for most doctor visits, the next would be anxiety about the state of ones health when they don’t feel good.

Sometimes folks want to hold my feet to the fire because I speak too blunt.  Yet I personally believe that another reason folks stay in the dark is because too many topics are not addressed straight on.  I’m going to toss this out in the open. Health is NOT something that comes in a capsule or something you can buy at the local drugstore.  If you work with the natural laws of nature, I believe that ANYONE can AFFORD to be healthy.  By God’s design our body is orchestrated and assembled as a near perfect machine in its inner and outer workings.  So many actions that are taking place within that you are completely unaware of that the body performs all with one reason, to keep the body as healthy as possible. That alone is a miracle .  Yet through I don’t know, maybe ignorance, fear and greed the proverbial monkey wrench is tossed into the workings of our miracle machine (body).  The truth is “health is simple; few have it.” said Dr. Bieler.

BASIC FOOD FOUNDATION:

Let me share some of what I’ve learned and applied over the years.  Take for example a vegetable from the squash family; Zucchini, it doesn’t offer a whole bunch of flavor it’s actually pretty bland tasting, yet its super rich in sodium.  Sodium, is one of the most important elements our body needs to balance alkalinity. (No table salt will NOT fill the bill in performing the same need in the body). So zucchini is a super healthy veggie to add to one’s salad, steam, add to some mixed veggie dish, juice etc.  Now if we move onto a key player in the body which is our liver, that organ is a storehouse of sodium, which sodium is needed to maintain the acid/alkaline equilibrium in our bodies.  We cannot be healthy without this balance.  So, that bland little zucchini is both food and medicine and if you know you have a sick liver, guess what is a good thing to start adding daily to ones food choices to restore an exhausted liver.  ZUCCHINI….

When I’m working with clients I try to teach them how to incorporate foods therapeutically, and to get “back to basics”.  I do not  have any “miracle pills.”  There are plenty of folks out there already peddling to those who are sick and tired of being sick and tired and want  what is claimed to be a quick fix like it was yesterday; if that is what your heart is looking for, that’s probably where you will feel more comfortable. Do I ever recommend nutritional supplementation?  Yes, I do, I also apply Orthomolecular Nutrition into the mix when I am working with a client.  But the foundation is all based around food.

I Work with my clients and teach them how their body works, and help them glide into lifestyle changes that are going to do a body good!  I equip them with tools, it’s up to THEM to apply those tools and LET their body do its own repair work!  My focus is on that of “health” NOT on “disease”.  It sounds silly to me, to tell a client how they can live WITH their illness, I’d rather help them understand what changes they can make so their body can by all rights get strong enough to kick it to the curb.

Typically when someone ends up scheduling a consultation with me; they feel sick, discouraged, they have tried to use different pills, shots and/or surgeries to keep their “sickness” under control.  If I’ve done my job well, my clients learn to cooperate with and not work against nature, they get better and are better equipped in the future to help themselves.  For many this takes TIME, the one thing many walk in saying, I can’t feel like this I don’t have TIME, yet if you don’t MAKE the TIME to address the issues, laying in a bed staring at the ceiling could be the next stop the train makes! Again, health is simple yet few have it, it takes a willingness to change what obviously isn’t working.  If you keep doing what you’ve always done and are expecting a different result, I hear tell that’s the definition of “insanity.”

Hippocrates believed that a diseased body needed a period of rest, not only physical rest, but chemical rest, which he considered even more important.  That Chemical rest could only be achieved by withholding food, which gives the organs in the body their opportunity to take anything that has accumulated as waste and do an internal house cleaning.

I love looking up and reading about Doctors from way back when… My 2nd career choice is called being lost for hours in the library, (don’t laugh it really could be a career.)  So here are some old-time Doc’s I ran across while being LOST in the library… In England, Dr. Thomas Sydenham’s concept of disease was narrowed down into one sentence: “Disease, is nothing else but an attempt on the part of the body to rid itself of morbific matter.”  Morbific, I love it, no one talks like that any more, but that word alone sure gets your attention.  Dr. Sydenham lived in the 17th century,  then there was another, a Dutchman who followed in Sydenhams footsteps, Hermann Boerhaave who said: “Disease is cured with the help of nature by neutralization and excretion of morbific matter.”  There’s that word again, morbific… I think I  could call getting lost for days in a library a career I could do this research on-line, but I LOVE the smell of the books inside the library! Sorry, side-tracked, moving right along….

Just prior to Louis Pasteur’s day was a Cellular pathologist Rudolf Virchow who was a pioneer in his field back in the day, and he stated:  “If I could live my life over again, I would devote it to proving that germs seek their natural habitat – diseased tissues rather than being the cause of diseased tissue: e.g. mosquitoes seek the stagnant water, but don’t cause the pool to become stagnant.”  Maybe re-read this paragraph…

The way our digestive system and the mechanics of how it performs its duties is obviously inherited,  our eating HABITS are LEARNED habits.  If you turn your toddler loose outside, will they not attempt to eat rocks, sticks and dirt?  You as parents have to teach them that those are NOT foods.  So why are we not doing the same by teaching them that fast food, refined sugar in the form of baked deserts are NOT healthy foods?  Because we can’t just tell them we have to show them by what they SEE us eating!  We lead by example not just by the words we speak.  The big revelation folks is always that our ACTIONS carry more clout than our words!

Hippocrates – “The urgency of the body to regain its normal, healthy state.  This is called vis medicatrix naturae – the healing power of nature which cures from within!”

It wasn’t until Louis Pasteur’s theory that disease came from outside the body, which for most folks is way easier to accept, because we are victims vs. a contributor to the issue.  That the medical arena of that day shifted gears and began to rely more on drug therapy vs. lifestyle adaptation. It’s when people started to take the “why is this happening to me, or I didn’t ask for this” mentality. Yet, Dr. Bieler M.D. used to tell his patients, “Your pain, misery and illness result from your own dietary mistakes and drugs.  You are suffering because you are filled with toxic wastes caused by your diet of poorly selected food filled with artificial flavorings, preservatives, synthetics, over-processed ingredients, too much stimulating food, too few natural vitamins from vegetables and fruits.  If you selected wholesome natural foods, they were probably improperly prepared, boiled to death or overheated in oil, then covered with harmful condiments.  The normal chemistry of your digestion is upset not only by these toxic wastes but also by harmful drugs, unhealthy  living habits that include lack of exercise.  So, highly poisonous materials toxins which have stagnated in your blood, impair the filters and eliminative organs, chief of which are the kidneys, liver bowels and skin.” That was back in 1965, and you know what, his practice was of such that Hollywood folks sought him out with their health issues, even when he tried to close his practice and retire, he ended up seeing patients in his home, he was a popular Doctor back in the day.

Early in my own practice, I studied Dr. Bieler’s methods intensely because it made sense!  I made his first cornerstone towards building health the starting line.  I start all my client’s on a juice fast.  If my client’s stick to the routine properly some will actually experience that of a fever which the body uses to burn up waste so it can be eliminated.

We have 2 important organs that take out our trash.  The liver and the kidneys.  The liver eliminates typically through the bowels, and the kidneys dump through the bladder.  There are times when the liver is congested and the waste makes it way into the blood, we don’t want it there.  The kidney’s if they are inflamed, toxins are backed up in the blood too.  So toxic dirty blood must get rid of these toxins or the person dies, so nature uses substitute avenues of elimination when this happens.  The lungs are used as the backup removal system when the kidneys can’t keep up.  So when folks tell me they have horrible respiratory issues, we work on strengthening the kidneys.  They are elimination partners.  The elimination partner for the liver is the skin, which when the overflow is being sent to the skin it results in breakouts like acne, eczema, and boils.

So, when there is a waste back up taking place in the body, and other organs are being used as emergency avenues of elimination,  seeing disease as an unnatural elimination process in order to speed along elimination; a couple things need to take place for the person to start to feel better.

Folks, I am passionate about working with people, I love to teach, and empower others to take back control of their health and proper maintenance of their bodies.  I know this post was a long one, but those that needed to read it, will in fact read it to the end.  Even if that is only one person than that is the person I was prompted by God to write this for to offer them maybe an element of hope where they may feel hopeless in their quest for feeling healthier.

I tend to share about some of my client’s (keeping their identity hidden unless they agree for me to share their name) cases, with the hopes that it helps others in their quest for turning around a health situation they may be struggling with.

Three years ago I had a 55 year old woman who came to me on the verge of begging to die, even admitted she had contemplated suicide because of her extreme depressive state.  On her first consultation she complained of heart palpitation and a near non existent sleep pattern.  Her blood pressure was 170/100; her urine was extremely acidic (QFA Analysis where I process first morning urine and saliva).  Her knees, ankles and feet were super swollen, she had fevers that came and went for no apparent medical reason and her joints were so painful that she could barely get up and down small steps.  She complained about being stiff and had what felt like crippling pain in her hands, hips and  right shoulder area.  Her biggest fear was that she was destined for confinement in a wheelchair.

Upon taking her lifestyle history; her dietary habits consisted of about 10 cups of coffee daily(she was running on Dunkin) with zero water intake, the coffee is what propelled her thru her day since her sleep pattern was terrible.  She smoked cigarettes, ate primarily meat for all three meals, lived and craved starches, canned fruits and refined sugar foods and to cap it all off she rotated between aspirin and Tylenol all day long to compensate for the stiffness and pain. She has been rotated for years on different arthritis medications, sleeping pills and depression medications too. She was very much overweight as a consequence of her lifestyle.

She looked at me with tears in her eyes and said,” I’m willing to give you 6 months of my life to see if you can help me get well.”  My response to her was ” It will probably take much longer than that,”  I believe in being honest with my clients.  I went on to tell her that “your joints didn’t get stiff in a day; the toxic saturation of your body has been years in the making, like burying a toxic metal drum in the soil, after years of erosion occurs and the contents start to leak out, then the ground water starts to become contaminated, the EPA cannot just drive in with a backhoe and take out the area with the leaky drum and consider the area “clean”.  Also, you have been covering up your symptoms with drugs, and coupled with a horrible daily diet, all these combined has been a cocktail for health decline.”

I convinced her to give up all the drugs, (since they were not fixing her symptoms), smoking, coffee and meat for her particular issues, although I do permit some clients to eat meat and drink weak herbal tea or coffee.  I recommended some calcium/magnesium capsules as her only nutritional supplementation and the following foods:  upon rising, one tsp of yeast dissolved in some warm water. Then for breakfast; a vegetable soup made with only green beans and zucchini.  Mid-morning; four ounces of raw cucumber juice. Then for lunch; steamed celery, more vegetable soup, one slice of whole grain bread and a blended salad with zero dressing.  Mid-afternoon; fruit or fruit juice diluted with water. Dinner;  one package of frozen or 10 oz. of fresh cut green beans, lightly steamed including the liquid from the pan and a head of romaine lettuce.  Before going to bed, another teaspoon of yeast dissolved in warm water.

Three years later, I’m happy to report that her weight-loss was just under 100 lbs; her blood pressure was 120/92; her depression had left completely; she was now sleeping well for the first time since she can’t remember when.  She was able to exercise and she was elated that she was free of arthritic pain.  She no longer struggled with edema in her feet or hands.  She said, ” I feel happier than I ever have and I never get tired of my diet, although it was super hard in the beginning to get used to and sometimes, for short periods, I went off of the diet because my craving for sweets and meats won the battle.  But strangely they didn’t seem to offer me the same satisfaction as I remembered in the past.  I realized I could feel the same symptoms returning when I cheated, and my quest to not end up in a wheel chair is what kept pushing me on.  The vision of my grandchildren visiting me in a wheel chair was just unacceptable.”

She went on to say: “my whole body feels better, I actually look forward to getting up in the morning, I have the physical energy to actually play with my grandchildren, and physically, I haven’t had this much energy without coffee since my early 20’s, even the tone of my skin is better and everyone tells me how much better I look.”

Even better was as she continued to go see her family physician, he kept insisting that the nutritional changes she was making had nothing to do with her physical improvements?  Yet since she was no longer taking any of her medications, what other explanation could there be? She eventually decided to look for a different family physician.

Dr. Frederick Hoffman who for many years was the chief statistician of the Prudential Life Insurance Company, who authored a dictionary-sized book on cancer and diet concluded: “I am fully convinced that profound dietary influences in cancer are to be looked upon as a causative factor.” Still, it is heresy to mention diet and cancer in the same sentence or diet and any disease which the medical profession believes can only be “cured” through a pill or an injection.

We are so concerned with synthesizing chemicals which will cure; that we have lost sight of the fact that these same chemicals have been lodged in our foods for thousands of years. “Let thy food be thy medicine, and thy medicine be thy food.”

__________________________________________________________________________________________

Folks through the years I have been able to observe the close relationship of someone’s diet and lifestyle and the connection of dis-ease in their health.

I remember the very first client that sought out my services who had a tumor. At that point in my practice my focus had been mainly on digestive support, candida over growth, weight-loss, and leaky-gut issues.  So truth be told I knew practically nothing about the relationship between tumors/cancer and diet & lifestyle connections.

This client had a tumor that could NOT be operated on because of certain nerves and blood vessels that were connected that the tumor had grown into.  This gal was referred to me because she was told I used foods to help folks strengthen their bodies and wanted to know if I could help her?  The first thing I did was I sent her for a hair mineral test, and I did a QFA Analysis.  The mineral test showed that her Sulphur was super elevated, which typically most folks are Sulphur depleted.  But her levels were the highest I’ve ever seen.

Her and her husband raised farm animals to sell, and she had been eating a lot of turkey before she was diagnosed with the tumor.  I was honest with her that I was not 100% certain what was going to be the best course of action, as I had never worked with a client whose Sulphur levels were off the chart like hers were.  I did decide that it made sense to remove anything that would be contributing to the Sulphur from her dietary plan.  I recommended foods that would increase her alkalinity by using certain veggies and fruits and fresh juices and blended raw salads.  It took about 8 months of sticking to a super rigid dietary plan, but her tumor was beginning to shrink.  18 months later it was all but completely gone. ( she did continue working with her physicians as she was changing her dietary lifestyle, I was NOT dealing with her tumor, I was dealing with her nutritional balance.)

Now the way my mind works, made me beyond curious that there had to be some major connections between diet and the healing capacity of our own bodies.  Here was an inoperable tumor that was consuming this gals blood vessels and nerves, and with severe dietary and lifestyle changes; a tad past 2 years and her doctors couldn’t find any signs of the tumor.  Realizing each one of us is unique by design, she had incorporated some meats back into her diet; beef, lamb, some fresh water fish, but I recommended she keep severely limited amounts of Sulphur rich foods in her diet.

I’d like to point out that not all my clients stick to what I recommend like their lives depend on it.  Yet in many cases it really does, if what you have been doing for years isn’t making you feel like the poster child for glowing health, then it should be obvious what your doing isn’t working well for you.

Some complain that their lives are just too busy to fit these dietary changes into “living on the run” and they just can’t stick with it.  When you realize that most folks go to their doctor not really for preservation of life, but for freedom from pain and as much disability as possible, most only focus on preservation when they are told they have an illness that is going to kill them.

Yet when the client/patient chooses not to co-operate, the recommendations given have zero power to function.  The other part that causes some clients to stop the nutritional battle plan that I end up recommending for their particular needs; is the housecleaning that their body starts through as the body is getting what it needs to start repairing and rejuvenating. The body has to get rid of what has been making it feel less than it’s best. Sometimes that process doesn’t feel the greatest either, so most will give up, and that is a shame.

Folks, the one thing NO practitioner can give you as a person is a MISSION in your own life, each one of us usually has something important that we hope to accomplish to the best of our ability.  For some it’s to make mountains of money, for others to acquire happiness although my life has taught me that happiness is declared on what is currently happening in our lives at any given moment which means our definition of happiness is governed to change based on our outward circumstances.  Yet JOY, is something that we choose to house within ourselves that cannot be affected by outward circumstances!  Whatever, your mission in life is or was way back when,  the truth is; being in a great state of health physically should be the starting point.  Your WEALTH is in your health…. if your sick nothing else matters, it’s all you can think about, it’s all you can focus on…because its the wheel that is squeaking the loudest!

Change your starting point and put your health at the top of your priorities and change your trajectory in life… IF you’d like some help doing just that, guess what… that is what I do… I offer you the help and your own body has the built in programming to do the rest! Your body has a built in “do it yourself” repair shop, but as any good repair shop owner will attest too, you have to have the proper tools to do the job!

I offer phone consults as well as in office appointments.  I’d be honored to work with you.

Natural Therapy for Cancer

Fruits and Vegetables

Anyone who has ever had cancer, or had a loved one with cancer, knows the feelings of fear, anxiety, worry and often hopelessness that this very serious illness can bring.  These emotions are very understandable it’s a serious illness.  So, its little wonder that cancer usually causes intense emotional distress in everyone involved.

Of course, the subject of cancer is far too involved to adequately address in a mere blog post.  However, I can acquaint you with some important information about cancer from a natural healing perspective and give you some ideas about options you may not be familiar with.  However, I strongly encourage you to seek professional help when dealing with cancer.  You need competent health care professionals helping you with your program and monitoring your progress, but you should also do some study on your own and learn about things you can do for yourself.

WHAT EXACTLY IS CANCER?

Cancer is a disease involving cells that have undergone a genetic mutation so they are no longer responsive to messages from the body that regulate cell metabolism and growth.  These mutations are believed to be the result of free radical damage turn cancerous.  Normal cells have an aerobic metabolism, which means they produce energy by means of oxygen and oxidation.  Anaerobic cells produce energy without oxygen via a process of fermentation.

This is important to know because if the body is highly oxygenated, the environment for cancer does not exist.  In fact, in 1931 Dr. Otto Warburg won a Nobel Prize for proving that whenever any cell is denied 60% of its oxygen requirements, it can become cancerous.  So, conditions that deprive cells of oxygen (like chronic inflammation, buildup of toxins or problems with red blood cells or circulation) increase the risk of cancer.  An overly acidic environment in the body is also a breeding ground for cancer.

Another important thing you should know is that cancer cells are forming in the body on a regular basis.  Very likely, you have a few inside you right now.  Don’t worry, the immune system normally recognizes these deviant cells and destroys them.

muscles

Therefor two factors must exist for you to develop cancer.  First, your body has to have a toxic, low oxygen environment that encourages the development of anaerobic cancer cells, and second, your immune system must be weakened so that it is not able to recognize and destroy these cells.

aerobic-respiration

So, while killing cancer cells (the goal of conventional cancer therapy) is an important part of treating cancer, it does not fix the underlying problems that created the cancer in the first place.  This is the weakness of the standard medical approach to cancer.  An effective protocol for cancer should do more than just destroy cancer cells, it should try to restore a normal, healthy environment in the body and rebuild the immune system.

So, even if one choose to use orthodox cancer therapies to destroy the cancer cells, they would be wise to consider doing natural therapy to restore the body’s state of health and prevent the cancer from wanting to re-occur.

PRINCIPLE #1: INCREASE OXYGEN LEVELS

Cancer cells are anaerobic, which means they live and thrive in a low oxygen environment.  They are able to get their energy by metabolizing nutrients, notable sugars and carbohydrates without oxygen, in a fermentative process.  Cancer cells cannot survive in a high oxygen environment, so keeping the body well oxygenated inhibits cancer.  Do this by getting plenty of fresh air and exercise, breathe deeply, if you smoke, QUIT.

oxygen

There are several supplements that can enhance oxygenation in the body.  For starters, CHINESE LUNG SUPPORT:  helps with oxygen delivery and uptake and is very useful for anyone with respiratory weakness.  Another Chinese remedy that strengthens the lungs and enhances oxygen transport is CORDYCEPS.  Cordyceps also helps the immune system.

LIQUID CHLOROPHYLL: is another great way to enhance oxygen transport.  It prevents clumping of red blood cells and helps them carry more oxygen to the tissues.  Research has shown that it can reduce the risk of cancer.

PRINCIPLE #2: BALANCE pH

In order to have optimal health, the body must maintain a proper internal pH.  Cancer cells prefer an acid pH environment.  Their fermentative metabolism also releases large amounts of lactic acid that inhibit transportation o oxygen to neighboring cells.  This spreads the environment for cancer.  A buildup of acid waste also inhibits toxins from being released by the cells.

ph-foods

The best way to counteract this acidic environment is to eat large quantities of fresh, preferable organic, fruits and veggies every day.  This is well-recognized as one of the best ways of decreasing your risk of cancer, but unfortunately, its benefit in helping folks recover from cancer is often ignored.  Fresh fruits and veggies not only help alkalize the body, they also strengthen immunity, aid detoxification and provide much-needed antioxidants.

Besides eating fresh fruits and veggies, there are several other supplements that can help alkalize the body.  The first is Ultimate Green Zone:  this is a whole food supplement that alkalizes the environment, aids in detoxification and builds the immune system to help it recognize and destroy cancer cells.

Digestive enzymes are a MUST to help balance pH.  my favorite choice for folks with cancer is Proactazyme plus and PDA Combo, these are great choices with balancing pH and assisting with proper digestion.  You can’t nourish a sick body if the food processor, a.k.a. digestive system can’t process the nutrients.  A lack of hydrochloric acid leads to excess lactic acid in the body, which sets the stage for cancer to thrive.  These are taken with meals to help the body metabolize food properly so as to avoid a buildup of acid waste and toxins.  They are also taken between meals to help rid the body of excess proteins that may be causing acid in the blood.

PRINCIPLE #3: STRENGTHEN THE IMMUNE SYSTEM

The body normally and regularly produces cancer cells due to free radical damage, environmental factors or other causes.  A healthy immune system recognizes and destroys these defective cells.  When the immune system is unable to recognize these deviant cells or is too weak to destroy them, the disease we call cancer takes root.

immune-system

There are many reasons why the immune system becomes weakened; poor nutritional intake is a major factor for many.  The loss or destruction of friendly bacteria in the intestinal tract is another.  Excessive sugar consumption supplies cancer cells with the energy they need to proliferate fast, (refined sugar is like fertilizer for cancer cells,) while contributing to chronic inflammation that distresses the immune system.

Improving nutritional intake, especially eating those 7-9 servings of fruits and veggies daily, will help the immune system, as will eliminating chemically laden processed foods.  Reducing intake of sugar, white flour and other simple carbohydrates will also prove helpful.

TRIGGER IMMUNE: helps to rebuild a weakened immune system, enhance vital energy and immune function and increase white blood cell production and platelet count.  It is very helpful in recovering from chemotherapy and can also be taken during chemotherapy to strengthen the system to resist toxic affects from chemotherapy.

IMMUNE STIMULATOR:  is another supplement that can boost the immune system to fight cancer.  It not only enhances natural killer cells (lymphocytes), which kill cancer cells, it also increases T-cell production and antibody production.  An important benefit of Immune simulator is its ability to enhance cellular communication, which helps the immune system identify and target calls it needs to destroy.

UNA DE GATO COMBINATION: is another herbal formula that strengthens a weakened immune system.  The principle ingredient, Una de Gato, has been used in South American for cancer treatment and contains compounds that inhibit tumor growth in animals.

PRINCIPLE #4: DETOXIFY

The human body is bombarded with toxins, heavy metals, chlorine and thousands of chemicals that we breathe in, consume in our diet or absorb through our skin.  These all cause free radicals in the body and contribute to the environment of cancer.

chemical

Avoiding these toxins is part of both cancer prevention and holistic cancer therapy.  In particular, avoid or eliminate refined and processed foods (especially foods raised with pesticides, antibiotics or steroids), toxic cleaning products (such as laundry detergents, skin care items, fluoride toothpaste, etc.) and chlorinated and fluoridated water. Research the ingredients that are in cleaning and health/beauty products before you purchase, we all carry mini computers today called “smart phones” which can give you information lickety split.  Also, avoid microwaved or irradiated food and protect yourself from electrical equipment (electromagnetic pollution may be a major causal factor in cancer).

It is also helpful to assist the body in detoxifying from these substances using any of the following supplements:

For starters: E-TEA or also referred to as Essiac Tea is a famous anticancer formula that helps the body eliminate toxins.  It improves lymphatic drainage and stimulates the immune system.

ALL CELL DETOX:  is another good, general cleansing formula that is based on a Native American medicine man’s cancer remedy.  It reduces inflammation, supports the liver and digestive system and helps neutralize acid.

BLOOD BUILD:  is a supplement I think everyone should use cancer or not at least 3 times a year.  it nourishes the blood and helps increase its volume.  It is an excellent formula for helping the body rebuild after chemotherapy.

PRINCIPLE #5: USE ANTIOXIDANTS

Our need for oxygen exceed the demand for any nutrient, even water, because we need oxygen for normal energy production in the cell.  You can go 3 weeks with zero food, and 3 days even without water, but you cannot go 3 minutes without oxygen.  Oxygen can also produce free radicals that can damage normal cells and cause cancer. Antioxidant nutrients protect the body from this free radical damage, thereby reducing cancer risk.  Antioxidants can also be used in a treatment program for cancer, because they help protect the body from harmful side effects of radiation and chemotherapy.

Some antioxidants to consider would include:  HIGH POTENCY GRAPINE:  which is an extract of grape seed that helps reduce inflammation and prevent cell damage, and GREEN TEA EXTRACT: which contains polyphenols called catechins, powerful antioxidants that protect cells from cancer and kill cancer cells.  One of these catechins is epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which was shown in several studies to kill cancer cells without harming healthy tissue.

One of my all time favorites is THAI-GO: its a liquid which many cancer patients will assimilate liquids easier, but this contains xanthones, a powerful antioxidant that has been shown in numerous studies to inhibit cancer cells and aid in tumor reduction.  These compounds cause apoptosis (or preprogrammed cell death) in cancer cells.  Xanthones exert cytotoxic (cancer cell killing) effects against human hepatocellular carcinoma cells, and have been shown to inhibit the growth of human leukemia HL-60 cells.  Xanthones have also been shown to be effective against human breast cancer SKBR3 cells.

IF-RELIEF: also contains xanthones and can be helpful for reducing chronic inflammation and pain.

PRINCIPLE #6: KILL CANCER CELLS

For those diagnosed with cancer, it is important to kill off the cancerous cells.  The problem is that chemotherapy and radiation also cause damage to healthy cells.  Killing cancer cells also produces toxins that the body MUST eliminate.

There are some natural compounds that can help kill cancer cells, too.  PAW PAW CELL REG: is a standardized extract of acetogenins from the American Paw paw tree.  These compounds have been shown in scientific research to cause apoptosis (preprogrammed cell death) in cancer cells by inhibiting their energy production.

Paw Paw Cell Reg is not appropriate for all cancers and should be used as a part of a comprehensive cancer program.  However, even if one chooses to use chemotherapy drugs.  Paw Paw may still be beneficial.  It has also been shown to reduce chemotherapy drug resistance.  By itself, paw pas doesn’t have the side effects of hair loss, weight loss, extreme nausea and compromised immunity.  It may cause nausea in larger doses however.

Paw paw is NOT recommended as a supplement for preventing cancer.  It is only appropriate when a person HAS cancer.  Paw paw is also ineffective against leukemia, lymphoma and other cancers that do not involve tumors.

Another supplement that can help the body destroy cancer cells, is HIGH POTENCY PROTEASE,  it breaks down the protein coat on cancer cells and also helps prevent cancer cells that are breaking down from creating a toxic load on nearby healthy cells.  It is taken BETWEEN meals for this purpose, and taken WITH meals to enhance digestion.

PRINCIPLE #7: INCREASE JOY AND PLEASURES

One German study shows a commonality that all cancer patients experienced a trauma and an unresolved psychological issue shortly before the cancer developed.  Stress is a big component of cancer because psychological stress creates physical stress that dramatically reduces immune function.

laughter.jpg

Reducing stress should be a stress-less task.  That’s why the goal here is not to reduce stress , but rather to deliberately seek out joy and pleasure.  A pleasurable, happy experience has a more positive effect on the immune system and healing than the stressful effects of an experience.

So, seek out pleasurable experiences. Find things that make you laugh.  Spend time with family, friends or pets.  Take a walk in the fresh air and sunshine.  Surround yourself with pleasing colors, smells, sounds.  Listen to favorite music; get up and dance.  Listen to calming, meditative music.  Take a hot bath in Epsom salts and lavender oil.  Treat yourself to a  full body massage, take a mini vacation or go to a spa for the day.

You can also reduce stress by taking some herbal support like NUTRI-CALM: which replenishes  the nervous system and adrenals.  ADRENAL SUPPORT : will help build stamina and promote healing as well as giving the body more ability to cope with stress.  Another option is CHINESE STRESS RELIEF:  which can assist the body’s ability to relax, counteracting stress.

Cancer is a difficult multi-facet disease to work with, but many folks have successfully recovered from cancer using both natural and conventional therapies or a combination of the two.  Seek out professional assistance in designing the holistic program that is a proper fit for you.  Remember, there is hope!

Asparagus: who knew….

Food Tip Tuesday:
The wonders of Asparagus

:asparagus
*contains an alkaloid called Asparagine, the value of this alkaloid for our health
*natural diuretic particularly when combined with some carrots,
*supports kidney/urinary health
*helpful for diabetes and anemia when used in conjunction with other veggies..
Now. I’m talking about either eating raw, chopped in salads or “juiced”. when asparagus is cooked ( many cook it until it’s limp and nasty) you are losing the value of the alkaloid as the hydrogen and oxygen are dissipated and the natural salts formed by the combination of this alkaloid are virtually lost or their value destroyed.
By using as a juice in conjunction with carrots, it helps break up oxalic acid crystals in the kidneys and thru the muscular system. it is good for rheumatism, neuritis. Rheumatism results from the end product of digestion of meat and meat products with generate excessive amounts of urea (according to Dr. Norman Walker)
Continuous consumption of meat proteins can tax the workings of the kidneys and eliminative organs, straining them to the point where progressively smaller amounts of uric acid is eliminated and a greater amount is then absorbed by the muscles. The end result is painful and referred to as rheumatism.
This is also one of the underlying causes for prostate gland issues, in which case this juice combination, in addition to the carrot, beet and cucumber juice has been quite helpful.

“9” Natural Immune Boosters

immune

9 Natural Immune Boosters
A vital immune system can mean the difference between a pleasant winter and a miserable one. Do your part to help your body stay strong with help from these gifts from Mother Nature:
1. ECHINACEA
The root and leaves of this purple coneflower have been used for centuries by American Indians and Europeans to boost immunity. Echinacea triggers the body’s white blood cells to attack unwanted invaders. According to research, it can significantly increase the body’s white blood cell count. Specifically, this herb increases the body’s count of T-cells, interferon, interleukin and immunoglobulin.
2. PROBIOTICS (FRIENDLY FLORA)
Believe it or not, your gut is a key part of your immune system. And eating plenty of friendly bacteria (probiotics) helps strengthen your immunity!
A recent study published in Postgraduate Medicine found that women who took a daily probiotic had higher levels of T-cells. T-cells are special white blood cells that support the immune system. So say “Yum!” to yogurt or get crazy for sauerkraut. But check the labels. Some yogurts offer very minimal amounts of friendly flora. Consider taking a quality probiotic supplement.
3. VITAMIN C
Many of us hit the orange juice or eat extra oranges or grapefruits during the winter months. Citrus and other red fruits and veggies (red peppers, strawberries and even leafy greens) contain vitamin C, which helps protect and support the immune system. It also strengthens the cardiovascular system, supports eye health and more.
4. VITAMIN D3
Long-cherished for its support of the bones, vitamin D3 (the sunlight vitamin) is opening eyes for its immune-system benefits. Researchers are studying this nutrient to find out how it helps support immunity. It appears to help regulate the function of lymphocytes (an important type of white blood cells), the production of cytokines (another key white blood cell) and the activity of macrophages (protein messengers vital to immune function).
5. GARLIC
This flavorful and aromatic member of the onion family stimulates the production of important white blood cells. Garlic also helps quench free radicals in the bloodstream. It even supports heart health.
6. ELDERBERRY
The western U.S. and Canada are home to the Sambucus nigra or elderberry. Its properties have been studied by many scientists, and for good reason! It contains principals that stimulate the body to make cytokines, a type of protein molecule that enhances the immune system’s response to attacks. This dark-colored berry also contains powerful antioxidants, including anthocyanins.
7. MUSHROOMS
Most people think of mushrooms as a flavor enhancer or use them to bulk up a dish. But some mushrooms offer much more than that. Researchers have found that reishi and cordyceps mushrooms contain chemicals that offer a host of immune benefits, including boosting the immune system and offering lung support. And, guys, it may help with prostate health as well!
8. ZINC
This essential trace mineral supports the body’s immunity and aids with nerve function. Zinc seems to work the best when taken at the first sign of concern.
9. OLIVE LEAF
Hold the pimientos. We’re talking about olive leaf here, not cocktail garnishes or pizza toppings. The leaves of this Mediterranean staple offer a powerhouse of protection against unwanted invaders. Olive leaf contains a bitter compound called oleuropein that also provides fabulous support to the circulatory system. And it battles free radical damage.
4 TIPS TO KEEP IMMUNE SYSTEM STRONG:
Minimize stress.
Stay active.
Eat a healthful diet. Steer clear of sugary and high-fat foods, which can slow and/or weaken immune response.
Socialize. People with friends have stronger immune systems than those who feel alone. Of course, try not to socialize with people who are sick

The “COME HITHER”, call of sugar…

There is a massive “love affair”, sweeping our country!  I believe the harlot’s name is called “sugar.”

Once you’ve tasted her, it only makes ya want more.  Yet for years, the concept of sugar addiction was dismissed by most scientists and doctors.  Research, however, is forcing this concept to be reconsidered.

Experts used to explain “sugar cravings” as the result of spikes & crashes in blood sugar levels.  Now of course this contributes, hence sugar and refined carbohydrates, which are easily reduced to sugar, are calorie dense and are rapidly absorbed by the body.  These foods 1st elevate the blood sugar levels, but are processed fast, leaving you feel unsatisfied and still hungry for more sugar.  This hunger is NOT driven by a need for caloric energy, but by a need for a stable blood glucose level.  Foods that are high in protein and fiber have a slower absorption rate and keep one satisfied longer.  All carbohydrates do eventually convert into sugar once inside the body, but more complex carbs do so at a much slower rate than simple carbs.

The word “addiction” has many connotations.  People laugh about all sorts of vices they consider themselves to be addicted too: sex, coffee, tobacco, alcohol, gambling, internet, video games, shopping….. Yet, there truly is no definitive test for addiction.  You cannot go to your doctor and have him swab your throat and come back and tell you that, yes, you have tested positive for addiction.  Mental health professionals usually diagnose addiction, and the definition is somewhat subjective.  A person’s quality of life, rather than their biochemical state is assessed.  Most agree, however, that a loss of control, along with the presence of tolerance and withdrawal, are the most notable features of addiction.

The”Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders IV”, the manual used by professionals to formally diagnose mental disorders, lists the criteria for diagnosis of addiction as meeting three or more of these factors:

  1. tolerance; the need for increased amounts of the substance to achieve the desired effect, or a diminished effect when the same amount is consumed.
  2. withdrawal symptoms when the substance is not taken
  3. a greater use of the substance than intended
  4. unsuccessful efforts to control the use of the substance
  5. a great deal of time spent using the substance or recovering from use
  6. a reduction of social, occupational, or recreational activities because of the substance
  7. continued use of the substance despite knowing that it causes social and physical problems.

When you base the above criteria alone, there is no doubts that sugar, as well as any other substance or action, can be considered addictive.  But can a person be addicted to sugar in the same fashion that someone can be addicted to drugs or alcohol?  For some, sugar does seem to have tangible effects in the brain, leaving them in a neurochemical state similar to drug addiction.  Although sugar does not exactly mimic the brain activity of addictive drugs, alcohol or nicotine, some similarities have been discovered.  If you’ve ever known someone who was recovering from alcoholism or drug additions, most of those folks are reaching for “chocolate, coffee, even cigarettes.”  Why might that be?  Well the endogenous opioid system is the brains mechanism for controlling pain.  Normally, pain is adaptive, letting us know that a part of our body needs attention & rest.  Persistent or excruciating pain, however, is maladaptive.  To manage pain, the body produces brain chemicals called endorphins.  Endorphins, also called opioids, work by binding to special receptors on our brain cells, called opioid receptors, and blocking a complex cascade of reactions, leading to the perception of pain. So when you hurt your back, and the doctor prescribes pain medicine, that medicine is blocking the brains pain receptor signal so you can’t quite “FEEL” the pain.

Research has suggested that SUGAR has a similar effect on the endogenous opioid system.  Of course “rats” were used for the study, but the study was to determine if excessive sugar intake could lead to tolerance and withdrawal, so the rats were placed on a cycle of bingeing on a glucose solution in addition to eating regular rat food.  After 8 days, the rats had increased their intake of glucose solution from 30mL to 79mL per day, and were eating more food.  At this point some of the rats were administered a drug called Naloxone which is used on folks who have overdosed on an opiate, because it blocks the opiate molecules from binding to the opioid receptors, and, by the same blocking, can induce withdrawal symptoms in an addict.  So they precipitated a withdrawal in some rats and the others were taken off the glucose solution and given saline injections.  Both rats experienced similar withdrawal symptoms.  If sugar did not have an opiate like effect on the brain, the naloxone group would not have displayed withdrawal symptoms.  In addition, further analysis of the rats brains found that the naloxone group had decreased levels of brain chemical dopamine and increased levels of the brain chemical acetylcholine.  This dopamine/acetylcholine imbalance is characteristic of morphine and nicotine withdrawal.

This same study determined that both sugar and morphine had a similar effect on dopamine levels in the brain, first increasing the amount of dopamine and then causing the dopamine to be down regulated, so that the absence of sugar and/or morphine left the rats lacking adequate dopamine.  Dopamine imbalances are found in schizophrenic and cocaine abusers.  Now with this being said; not everyone who consumes sugar will have an addictive effect  because not everyone experiences the same neurochemical effect, just like not everyone who drinks alcohol will become an alcoholic.

Biologist Sarah Tanksley believes that a “lack of serotonin is a factor in many mental disorders, including clinical depression.  Sugar and other refined carbs increase the level of serotonin in the brain.  Serotonin plays a key role in the pathway of pain management by inducing their release of opioids.  It would seem reasonable to conclude that a person with depression may resort to bingeing on sweet foods to increase serotonin, release opioids and feel the addiction process.”

Sarah went on to say: ” Perhaps a better understanding of the effects of sugar on our brains can lead to treatments for eating disorders such as binge eating and bulimia.  Many therapists treat eating disorders as addictions, and the endogenous opioid system may be the mechanism at work.  The binge eater will consume hugs amounts of food in a short amount of time, seemingly without limits.  A bulimic will eat large amounts of typically sugary, starchy foods, and once the desired opiate like effect is obtained, will purge the food to avoid weight gain.  Since bingeing on sweets, prolonged starvation and vigorous exercise all activate the endogenous opioid system, it is easy to see how a person could become stuck in an addictive cycle of starving, bingeing, and purging, through vomiting and/or exercise.”

These findings also make sense when you consider smokers who will gain weight after they quit smoking, and heroin addicts who suffer a loss of appetite when using the drug, then crave sugary candy during detoxification from the drug.  Eating disorders, bulimia in particular, have a high co-morbidity with alcoholism and other drug additions, according to Sarah Tanksley Biologist.

What makes it difficult to refrain from sugar is the fact that it is so readily available.  You don’t have to go to a bar or a special store to buy candy like you do other addictive elements.  It’s NOT illegal either.  In fact, eating sugar is often encouraged, we give candy as gifts, as rewards and treats to our children, sugary treats are elevated as gifts of acknowledgement and as expressions of love and kindness. Heart shaped boxes filled with chocolates are given for Valentines Days, Christmas, Easter etc.

There is a whole host of physical issues that also accompany a sugar addiction:

weight gain

candida/yeast over-growth

immune system weakness

brain-fog

insulin imbalances (hypoglycemia & diabetes)

digestive issues

Constipation

inflammation

Cancer: ( sugar creates a very acidic pH internal environment which is like fertilizer to cancer cells)

I get clients who when I’m working nutritionally with them and their children, I cannot tell you how many mothers “ask”, when can they have sugar again?  We get emotionally attached to what we offer through our foods, meaning, cooking a nice meal for someone has become a way of exhibiting “love” for another, especially when its their “favorite.”

Folks, food and eating is meant to FEED and NOURISH the body, there are other ways to show your love for someone.  Don’t make food a reward, it is a basic need.  One example that drives that point home to me is how many have ever watched any of those shows where folks are dropped off in the middle of no where to survive.. like ” Naked and afraid”,  the people participating in those do or die situations, when they run across something that can be eaten, they are not elaborating in their minds about how it LOOKS, what kind of plate its served on, what side dish will they serve with it.  The truth is they are hungry!  When you can change and adapt your mental connection as to what role food is meant to play, I believe you can begin the healing process of being able to abstain from all the overly processed foods that create these addictive cycles that are destroying our health, and especially the health of our children.

The amount of sugars and carbohydrate overload that our youth are consuming on a daily basis is and should be totally SHOCKING!  Yet those foods (which I hate even categorizing them as), are easy to serve, they are quick convenient. Although, grabbing an apple is quick and convenient, how about a handful of grapes, or strawberries, a banana, are NOT all of those quick and convenient too?

I believe there is a PRICE to pay for the simplicity of quick and convenient. We are developing a generation of over-weight, underactive people who struggle to stay emotionally balanced, cannot cope with even simple stressors, even technology is jumping on board to fill in the anti-social gap, even though we refer to it as “social media”, “text messaging”, and all the other communication “apps”, sure we are able to connect with people all across the globe now, but think about something,  those connections are emotionally unattached, and impersonal.  Try calling a teen-ager or young adult on their phone today and most will let it go to voice mail.  But text message them and it’s answered within seconds, look at groups of people in social gatherings and  how many are physically making eye contact with the folks they are with?  Most have their heads down buried in their cell phones.  Lack of serotonin production, dopamine levels that are off, all the neurotransmitters that allow us to FEEL our emotional connections are off and just spend some time people watching and tell me I’m wrong.

We need to also realize we have been conditioned over the years by commercials/advertising.  Ever notice that all the junk foods tend to cost “less” than wholesome fresh foods?  Well that is because those junk foods can grace the store shelves for 3+ years, I don’t think an apple/orange or banana would pass that test. But you are wasting your money on those junk food items because they offer the body ZERO in the nutritional elements, so you are eating empty food items. So why waste your money?

So for any of my readers who may still be wondering: “Is my body addicted to sugar?”  if you find yourself asking the very question, your answer probably needs to gravitate to a yes!!!  Is there a way to navigate yourself away from that addiction?  Yes there is, but it will be a process, the body needs to be built up nutritionally for balance.

Cholesterol: It’s Essential Role….

good-and-bad-cholesterol

CHOLESTEROL: Americans have become so conditioned to avoid all foods containing cholesterol.  This is a grave mistake as it places a much bigger burden on the body….

I am concerned at the alarming rate of clients that are on Statin medications because they have been told their cholesterol levels are out of control.  Yet I dig into the Statin industry and realize they have enjoyed at least a 30 yr. run of steadily increasing profits, as it finds ever more ways to justify expanding the definition of the segment of the population that qualifies for statin therapy.

Now in DEFENSE of these wonder drugs: Large, placebo-controlled studies have provided evidence that statins can substantially reduce the incidence of heart attack.  High serum cholesterol is indeed correlated with heart disease, and statins, by interfering with the body’s ability to synthesize cholesterol, are extremely effective in lowering the numbers.  Heart disease is the number one cause of death in the U.S. and, increasingly, worldwide.  What’s not to like about statin drugs?

Realizing I am not alone as I begin to question how beneficial reducing one’s cholesterol using drugs can be to a persons health, being that the body actually produces LDL, it serves a purpose!  Then I stumble upon Stephanie Seneff, Ph.D. who writes: “I have spent much of my time in the last few years combing the research literature on metabolism, diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer’s and statin drugs.  Thus far, in addition to posting essays on the web, I have, together with collaborators published two journal articles related to metabolism, diabetes and heart disease (Seneffl et al., 2011) and Alzheimer’s disease (Seneff2 et al., 2011).  Two more articles, concerning a crucial role for cholesterol sulfate in metabolism, are currently under review (Seneff3 et al., Seneff 4 et.al.).  I have been driven by the need to understand how a drug that interferes with the synthesis of cholesterol, a nutrient that is essential to human life, could possibly have a positive impact on health.  I have finally been rewarded with an explanation for an apparent positive benefit of statins that I can believe, but one that soundly refutes the idea that statins are protective.  I will, in fact, make the bold claim that nobody qualifies for statin therapy, and that statin drugs can be best described as toxins.”

She started to examine the claims that statins would cut the incidence of heart attacks by a 3rd.  What does that mean?  Well according to Seneff a meta-study reviewing seven drug trials, involving 42,848 patients, ranging over a three to five year period, showed a 29% decreased risk of a major cardiac event, this was recorded (Thavendiranathan et al, 2006).  But the thing is, heart attacks were rare among this group, so what this then translates to in absolute terms is that 60 patients would need to be treated for an average of 4.3 years to protect one of them from a single heart attack.  However, essentially all of them would experience increased frailty and mental decline.

Seneff states that the impact of the damage due to the statin anti-cholesterol mythology extends far beyond those who actually consume the statin pills.  Because Cholesterol has been demonized by the statin industry, and as a consequence American have become conditioned to avoid all foods containing cholesterol.  Which is a huge MISTAKE, because it places a bigger burden on the body to synthesize sufficient cholesterol to support the body’s needs, and it deprives the body of several essential nutrients.

Does anyone remember the “attack” against eating EGGS, eat only the whites, toss out the yolks because it will raise your cholesterol!  When in fact eggs ARE very healthy and it’s the YOLK that contains all the important nutrients.  It’s the yolk that allows the chick embryo to mature and grow into what we call a “chicken”.

Many of my clients will bring copies of current lab work with them to our consultation.  I am beginning to believe that this issue is becoming wide-spread, so many are struggling with being deficient in crucial nutrients:
*choline
*zinc
*niacin
*Vitamin A
*Vitamin D
Funny thing is that from a food perspective all the foods that naturally contain these crucial nutrients are ones that they have been advised to avoid consuming because they contain cholesterol.

Let me hit you with some EDUCATION about the roll cholesterol plays in the history of what you call your HEALTH:

Cholesterol is NOT the enemy, it is truly a remarkable element that truth be told without it, the human body can’t live!  There are some distinguishing factors that us mammals have as an advantage over plants:
1. A nervous system
2. mobility
3. cholesterol

Cholesterol, absent from plants, is the key molecule that allows humans and animals to have mobility and a nervous system.  Cholesterol has chemical properties that are very unique, these are exploited in the lipid bilayers that surround all animal cells:  as cholesterol concentrations are increased, membrane fluidity is decreased, up to a certain critical concentration, after which cholesterol start to increase fluidity (Haines, 2001)( I’m tossing in these references lest you think I’m pulling this stuff out of thin air).

The Cells exploit this property to a wonderful advantage for ion transport, which is essential for both mobility and nerve signal transport. (If the nerves cannot send a signal, guess what NOTHING is able to be mobile, meaning US!)

In addition to the role of ion transportation, cholesterol is also the precursor to vitamin D3; the sex hormones, estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone; and the steroid hormones such as cortisol.  So let me ask you, how many folks who have been taking statin meds for any extended length of time find that they cannot keep their vitamin D3 levels elevated to where it should be? Or how many find their sexual urges seem to have packed their bags and headed to unknown lands?  Who finds that their muscle and joint inflammatory issues seem to climb onto the scene because there is now an imbalance in their cortisol production which then begins to affect their blood sugar levels as well as blood pressure and I can continue to pinpoint more in the domino decline.

You see Cholesterol is ABSOLUTELY essential to the cell membranes of all of our cells, where it protects the cell not only from ion leaks, but also from oxidation damage to membrane fats.  While the brain contains only 2% of the body’s weight, it houses 25% of the body’s cholesterol.  As a matter of fact; cholesterol is VITAL to the brain for nerve signal transport at synapses and through the long axons that communicate from one side of the brain to the other.  Cholesterol sulfate plays an important role in the metabolism of fats via bile acids, as well as in immune defenses against invasion by pathogenic organisms.

I know I’m tossing a whole bunch of technical stuff at you, however, I think many folks need to be able to understand the vital role cholesterol actually plans in the total scope of “health.”

Statins inhibit the action of an enzyme, HMG coenzyme A reductase, that is needed as a catalyst in an early step in the 25-step process that produces cholesterol.  This step is an early step in the synthesis of a whole bunch of other powerful biological substances that are involved in cellular regulation and antioxidant effects.  One of these which you have heard and seen me talk about on frequent posts, “coenzyme Q10”, which is present in the greatest concentration in the heart, which plays a huge role in mitochondrial energy production and acts as a powerhouse antioxidant (Gottlieb et al, 2000)

LETS TALK ABOUT LDL, HDL

Most folks have to taught to focus and worry about elevated serum levels of low density lipoproteins (LDL), with respect to heart disease.  LDL is not a type of cholesterol, but rather can be viewed as a container that transports fats, cholesterol, vitamin D, and fat soluble antioxidants to all the tissues in the body.  These are NOT water soluble nutrients so they must be packaged up and transported inside the LDL particles in the blood stream.  If you interfere with the production of LDL, you then reduce the bioavailability of all these nutrients to your body’s cells.

LDL particles also contain a special protein called “apoB: that enables LDL to deliver it’s goods to the cells that are in need.  ApoB is vulnerable to attack by glucose and other blood sugars, especially fructose.  Diabetes results in an increased concentration of sugar in the blood, which further compromises the LDL particles by gumming up apoB.  Oxidized and glycated LDL particles become less efficient in delivering their contents to the cells.  So they stick around longer in the bloodstream, and the measured serum LDL level goes UP.

Once the LDL particles have delivered their contents, they become small dense LDL particles, remnants that would normally be returned to the liver to be broken down and recycled. (the body process is so AMAZING)  But once the LDL particles have finally delivered their contents, they then become small dense LDL particles, remnants that would ordinarily be returned to the liver to be broken down and recycled.  But the attached sugars interfere with this process as well, so the task of breaking them down is now assumed by macrophages in the artery wall and elsewhere in the body, thru a scavenger operation.  The macrophages are especially skilled to extract cholesterol from damaged LDL particles and insert it into HDL particles.  Small dense LDL particles become trapped in the artery wall so that the macrophages can salvage and recycle their contents and this is the basic source of atherosclerosis.

HDL particles are referred to as the “good” cholesterol, and the amount of cholesterol in HDL particles is the lipid metric with the strongest correlation with heart disease, where less cholesterol is associated with increased risk.  So the macrophages in the plaque are actually performing a very useful role in increasing the amount of HDL cholesterol and reducing the amount of small dense LDL.

LDL particles which are produced by the liver, synthesizes cholesterol to insert into their shells, as well as into their contents.  The liver is responsible for breaking down fructose and converting it into fat (Collison et al, 2009).  Fructose is 10X more active than glucose at glycating proteins, and is therefore very dangerous in the blood serum (Seneff1et al., 2011).  When you eat a lot of fructose (like high fructose corn syrup present in lots of processed foods and carbonated drinks), the liver is burdened with getting the fructose out of the blood and converting it to fat, and it can not keep up with cholesterol supply.  Like Stated before, fats can not be safely transported if there is not enough cholesterol.  the liver has to ship out all that fat produced from the fructose, so it produces low quality LDL particles, containing insufficient protective cholesterol.  So you end up with a really bad situation where the LDL particles are vulnerable to attack, and attacking sugars are readily available to do damage.

COCONUT WATER AS EFFECTIVE AS STATIN DRUG:
A recent study indicated that coconut water contains many nutritional and therapeutic properties.  a natural acid and sterile solution that contains several biologically active components:
* L-arginine
*ascorbic acid
*minerals like calcium, magnesium and potassium
all of which have beneficial effects on lipid levels.

The research authors stated, “recent studies in our lab showed that both tender and mature coconut water feeding significantly reduced hyperlipidemia in cholesterol fed rats.”,  The current study evaluated the hypolipidemic effect of coconut water compared to the lipid lowering drug lovastatin in rats fed a fat cholesterol enriched diet ad libitum for 45 days.  the authors state in their summary of the study.  “Coconut water has had lowering effect similar to the drug lovastatin in rats fed the fat cholesterol enriched diet.”  You can view the full report: Sandhya, V.G, Rajamohan, T., 2006 “beneficial effects of coconut water feeding on lipid metabolism in cholesterol fed rats.” J. The Gray Zone… skin tone…

gray-skin

CLIENT: I had a consultation with a client, and one of the 1st things I noticed about him was how particularly “gray” his skin tone was. Of course that wasn’t the reason for his visit, as a matter of fact his main reason was, he just always felt “REALLY TIRED” all the time. Zero energy!

SANYO DIGITAL CAMERA

I go thru a client intake/history with each person, and the fatigue kept being his center of topic, although, I found out he’d struggled with chronic indigestion and heartburn. He pointed out that both symptoms had been keeping company with him for upwards of 20 yrs., he basically had “stock” in the Tums/Rolaids since his early 40’s. I detected a note of accomplishment in his voice and demeanor when he stated he was now taking Tagamet every day for the past 7 yrs. and his indigestion was no longer an issue.
I posed this to him, ” you know stomachs are naturally designed to secrete enough acid to turn even large meals into the equivalent of soupy mush?” “Yeah, I know that in general, but all the doctors told me that my indigestion & heartburn are due to too much acid,” was his reply.
I asked: did anyone ever actually measure your stomach-acid production?”
His answer: “No… but the symptoms sure have gone away since I blocked all that acid out.”
My response: “and a river will dry up if we stop all the rain,” “Maybe that’s an advantage for a little while if the river has been overflowing, but what happens if we stop the rain permanently?”
He thought for a brief second, “permanently?” “At least 7 yrs..” “Quite a drought. Nothing would grow.”
I chucked and stated: “Right, and if we shut off or neutralize our stomach’s natural acidity for more than brief intervals, there are similar consequences. First, we don’t break down foods as well, and many nutrients, especially essential amino acids, certain minerals, and at least two B vitamins, aren’t made as available by natural acid digestion as they usually are, and aren’t properly absorbed into our bloodstreams, So our cells don’t have the normal amounts of nutrients for nourishment. Second, when that acidified soup empties out of the stomach into the upper small intestine, it triggers the secretion of hormones that in turn stimulate the3 pancreas and gallbladder to make or release their own digestive secretions, such as enzymes, bicarbonate, and bile. Without the acid trigger, these hormones are under-produced, and the next stages in digestion doesn’t work as well as they should either. This makes another whole group of nutrients less available to your cells.”
“So it’s like a domino of events. If the acidity isn’t there, then other parts of digestion will fail to trigger too.” He asked ( My favorite part of my job is when I see evidence of the lightbulb getting brighter).
I said: “Exactly, and we don’t even know if we know absolutely all the domino’s in the digestive system, we are fearfully and wonderfully made.”
His response was: “No wonder I’m tired, I’ve literally dried up a lot of my digestion for years. Why didn’t anyone tell me about this?”
“I don’t know, it’s all right there in the basic textbooks for medical students. But that’s not all: The same basic textbooks list a 3rd consequence of low or no stomach-acid production. Let’s think about it like this: What happens if I put bacteria or parasites into an acid in a test tube?”
He says: “I’m not sure, but I would presume they’d die?”
RIGHT, they die & turn into a minor protein supplement. Textbooks of gastroenterology actually call stomach acid the acid barrier to intestinal-tract infection. Also, everyone knows that farther down the intestinal tract is home to a nice variety of micro-organisms called intestinal flora, that also help with digestion, secrete a few important vitamins, and generally behave themselves. But if the acid-alkaline balance, also called the pH; isn’t just right, then many of the friendly micro-organisms literally die out and are replaced by not-so- friendly germs. Some of them will excrete substances that are actually toxic to our cells, that are absorbed and then spread all thru the body.
So now my Gray skinned client, is shifting in his chair. “So not only have I been semi-starving myself but also maybe encouraging toxins from my gut to get around my whole system? I shook my head : Yup I’m afraid so!
Next best question: “So could blocking my normal stomach function be why I have all this extreme fatigue?” I answered: Very likely, so the 1st course of action is to work on restoring normal digestion as much as possible, make up for at least 7yrs. of unintended malnutrition, and, if necessary, work to restore normal gut flora. Then we’ll see.”
He was concerned about stopping the Tagamet, fearful he’d have indigestion and heartburn all over again. I stated there are natural ways to stop indigestion and heartburn without blocking stomach acid.
The truth is, you can eat all the right foods and still slowly starve to death, if the food processor cannot process the food rolling down the slide. Underproduction of stomach acid in the majority of cases is the issue! the official name is HYPROCHLORHYDRIA (meaning low or no stomach acid), it is one of the most common digestive malfunctions, and it is often accompanied by other, seemingly unrelated health issues. Inadequate digestion also becomes more frequent as we age. So remember, even if you are eating the best healthiest diet, or for a particular ailment, if the food you are eating is incompletely digested or assimilated, your body still isn’t getting the nutrients it needs and won’t be effective!
LESSON: our bodies are made up of 60 or so essential nutrients (essential being defined as nutrients without which we’d sooner or later drop dead); how healthy can you be if your body isn’t absorbing even one of those nutrients? And what if a dozen or more nutrients are in short supply? If our foods and supplements don’t encounter the proper acid and enzymes they won’t digest and absorb, which will cause malnutrition. In essence, you could be eating all you need but still starving.
Many peeps who have too little stomach acid are being treated as if they have TOO much, probably because the symptoms are similar. 10-15% of the population suffers from low stomach acid production and are being misdiagnosed and mistreated.
Why would you want to take antacids or acid blockers when your stomach is already weak and not digesting? It’s easy symptom relief that’s why. But it is symptom relief that is offering ZERO remedy /recovery! Let me emphasize that antacid sales are a booming business,,, that statistic alone should alert you to how many folks are living with incomplete digestion!
SIGNS OF LOW HCL:
*BLOATING
*BELCHING
*BURNING SENSATION AFTER EATING
*FEELING LIKE FOOD IS JUST SITTING THERE AND NOT DIGESTING
*INABILITY TO EAT MORE THAN A SMALL AMOUNT OF FOOD WITHOUT FEELING FULL
*CONSTIPATION (note you can still have a bowel movement each day and be struggling with incomplete digestion, check and see if your stool sinks to the bottom of the toilet, if so, that’s incomplete digestion)
*WEAK PEELING EASILY BROKEN FINGERNAILS.
*HAIR LOSS
*GASSINESS
*DILATION OF CAPILLARIES IN THE CHEEKS AND ON THE NOSE (in non-alcoholics)
There is a long list of disease frequently associated with low stomach acidity which includes:
*DIABETES
*UNDER/OVER ACTIVE THYROID
*CHILDHOOD ASTHMA
*ECZEMA
*GALLBLADDER DISEASE,
*OSTEOPOROSIS
*RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS,
*CHRONIC HIVES
*LUPUS
*WEAK ADRENALS
*CHRONIC HEPATITIS
*VITILIGO
*ROSACEA
If you struggle and suffer from some of these symptoms or diseases mentioned and you suspect that your problem is poor digestion, I’d be honored to work with you and your inner food processor.
Update on my Mr. GRAY man, his skin color slowly returned to the normal brown/pink skin tones. His fatigue also waned and was replaced by increased energy. His wife noted improvements in his MOOD and ATTITUDE, 6 months later, he declared himself “back to normal.” He was skeptical at first, but noticed remarkable improvements within the 1st 2 weeks and progress just kept improving from that point forward.
Hope this was helpful, especially as we are rocking into the holiday “gorging” season,,, many will be wanting to reach for the anti-acids, how bout you schedule an appointment before the holidays hit full throttle, you maybe able to enjoy the banquet table vs. resentment and misery! go to http://www.mkt.com/harvested-health-llc and book & pre-pay for your consultation and we can take that 1st step.

#tired, #zeroenergy, #digestion, #heartburn, #GERD,

ABC’S easy as 1,2,3….approach your health simply!!!!

What I feel to be the “beauty” of what I offer in my practice thru Natural healing is not relying on the disease diagnosis/treatment model. I do not diagnose diseases or prescribe any treatments for them. What I do offer is the model to help balance the body so it will heal itself. I utilize certain basic therapies that remove underlying causes of disease and use them to help the body heal itself. These basic therapies fall under the titles:
• Activate
• Build
• Cleanse
• Direct Aid
I was taught these principles, I have applied them in my own life and I encourage my client’s to apply these same tools.
I believe that the Activate therapy is a very critical step in the healing process. I encourage my client’s to begin by visualizing and believing that they can be well. Effective natural healing acknowledges the simple truth that the body has been fearfully & wonderfully made with a built in natural capacity to heal itself. That is evident and has presented itself throughout our life thus far. Have you ever cut yourself? Did you have to go crazy with major assistance for that cut to heal? Have you ever broken a bone? Even if you had that broken bone set in a cast, the cast itself offered zero healing benefits, it just kept the broken bones in alignment while the “body” went about mending the area that was broken. So there is positive proof that the body in fact is made by design to keep itself healthy, repaired and running well.

My goal as a natural practitioner is to champion my client’s towards believing in that built in healing capacity. Positive thinking goes a long way, the next steps we incorporate is to enhance that built in self-healing ability which resides in all of us.

I want to touch on faith…. Even those who don’t have a strong religious foundation actually have to begin to admit that they initiate faith each and every day. We take it on faith that a new day is going to be there for us when we go to bed & open our eyes the next day. We take it on faith that when we inhale we are taking in life giving air. We have to lay a hold of the fact that what we do not already have as if we actually already have it. The strength of that inner faith is what can move mountains and display what others claim to be as miracles. There are people who were told after an injury they would never walk again, and by sheer faith & determination they proved that statement wrong, yet there are others who are given the same statement and they never walk again. What may be the turning point from one to the other, possibly their level of faith to believe in the strength & healing power of their own bodies.

You have to be willing to employ a positive attitude and have positive emotions. Those thoughts & emotions radiate a vibrational energy that like a stone tossed in a pond carry a ripple effect, that ripple can be negative or positive, that is all down to the thoughts & emotions of the individual. So glass half empty or half full that becomes a personal choice. My job as my client’s practitioner is to encourage my client to be the champion I know they can be, however, I cannot heal anyone, I can equip them with tools, but their willingness to apply those tools rest in their hands. I always want more for my client’s than I sometimes believe they may want for themselves. However, in all honesty, I have no “skin in the game” so to speak, what I do have though is MY integrity to my work, my belief in what I offer because I have applied it in my own life and seen and experienced the benefits of incorporating the very same tools for the improvement of my own health.

So I want to address what positive thinking may look like. When we have positive thoughts it actually provides an electrical stimulating impulse that moves through our nervous system and can activate the healing energy of our tissues. (we are totally electrical beings, without that nervous system, our muscles and organs won’t work).
Negative thoughts however send a totally different kind of stimulation to our tissues, which can result in them working in a dysfunctional manner. Truth be told most of us have to work extra hard on manifesting more positive speech as the negative seems to come so much easier.
• My spouse drives me nuts
• My neighbor makes me sick to my stomach
• My friends are against me
• I feel stabbed in the back
• That makes me want to throw up

You have to get rid of the negative talk.
I think you get the idea I’m trying to make. When we continue to repeat in our thoughts and speech with such a negative barrage our body can literally respond to these subtle messages by causing the very pains & illnesses our thoughts are telling us to create. That’s why it is so important for healing that we don’t identify directly with a named disease. When we see disease for what it is, which is a process demonstrating that one’s system is out of balance, it is easier to heal.

When we on the other hand see the disease as something that is part of us, something that has taken over or control of us, then a feeling of helplessness and hopelessness, then gets the opportunity to take over. Statistics have proven that cancerous tumors grow faster once someone has been told they have cancer. This is because that person’s fear and worry actually depresses the immune system, which in turn makes the disease worse. So here are a couple basic activating therapies you can use to promote healing in the body.

#1. Affirmation & visualization:

Affirmation simply put is being in the present tense that affirms what you want as if you actually already had it. So I I had a broken bone and I wanted to speed up the healing of that bone I would state & affirm “my bone is whole & strong.” Notice the present tense “my bone IS”. This is so vital to making positive affirmations work because it is laying hold of what you desire in the present tense. If you say, “ my bone will be whole and strong,” this puts the fulfillment in the future, not the present and doesn’t convey the same power. If a direct statement like that is difficult to use, then a less direct but equally effective statement would be, “my bone is healing as it should.”

So this is what positive affirmation should look like:
• My body is healthy & strong
• My body is healing as it should
• I am fearfully & wonderfully made
• You body is recovering nicely

Visualization actually involves getting into a more relaxed state & breathing deeply while you picture the final result you desire in your mine. It is super important to actually see yourself having what you want right now, not in the future.  Many Cancer Clinics have their Cancer patients  practice visualizing their white blood cells gobbling up the cancer cells & destroying them. It has been proven in studies that employing visualization actually enhances the immune system.
When you use both of these techniques they are enhanced when you practice deep breathing & relaxation. When you breathe deeply, tissues receive more oxygen, which fans the spark of life & increases the flame of life throughout the body. Breath is called the “breath of life” because it is intimately connected with the vital life force within us. To breathe is to actually connect with feelings of being alive, shallow breathing causes a person to stifle their feelings by deadening the body.

So start your healing process by breathing deeply & allowing your body to relax. Then you can pick one of the next methods for “laying a hold” on the health you want before you actually have it.

#2 Stress Management:

I think we can all identify with what stress looks like which is:
• Worry
• Tension
• Fear
• Frustration
It feels like pressure. The world we live in makes it difficult to avoid stress. There are bills to pay, our car breaks down when it is the least convenient, overload with responsibilities at work (overworked & underpaid syndrome), marital issues, stress with the children  the list seem never ending and each new day can present another element of something to feel stressed out about. It’s estimated that up to 90% of all visits to the doctor is for stress related health issues. So learning how to manage what obviously is always going to be around, makes sense.
Before you can manage something you actually have to understand what it is. When our brain perceives stress it sends a chemical message to the pituitary thru the hypothalamus which triggers the release of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH). ACTH then prompts the adrenals to start producing hormones like epinephrine (adrenaline) and cortisol. Epinephrine actually doubles as a hormone & neurotransmitter. It tenses our muscles, increases our heart rate & blood pressure, dilates the bronchial tubes & speeds up our breathing, shuts down the digestion & other functions not essential to immediate survival, and  prepares our body for action mode.

Cortisol reduces inflammation, which is meant our body to deal better with injury & pain. Although its role in reducing inflammation is important, when to much cortisol is released it can causes premature aging, depress immune function & extended over production can cause the muscles to waste including causing the brain to shrink so many will notice memory loss, brain fog aspect. These stress hormones also cause a rise in our blood sugar levels & increases the blood clotting factors which makes the blood thicker.

So it’s easy to see how chronic long term stress can become a major player in tons of health problems, including poor digestion, constipation, tension headaches, neck & shoulder pain, low back pain, ulcers, high blood pressure, blood clotting, increased risk of infections, asthma, diabetes, excess weight and even cancer & autoimmune disorders. In fact, I’m willing to go out on a limb and suggest that a large percentage of all the illness we experience probably has a stress connection. So, reducing stress is one of the basic things we can do to improve our overall health. In fact, relaxation is critical for the healing process.
It’s apparent that to eliminate stress from our lives probably isn’t going to be a reality, but learning how to reduce it’s impact on our health is doable aspect. What are some of the avenues that can be applied for coping better with the effects stress can have on you physically:
I’ll offer you:
• #1. Breathe: I mean breathe deeply, it’s simple, it’s free and you can do it anywhere. If you stop and take stock of what happens when you are feeling stressed, you will notice that you re either holding your breath or breathing very fast & shallow. When you concentrate on breathing slowly & deeply, you will activate the parasympathetic nervous system and help reduce your stress levels. Repeat in your mind while breathing in…. I am and while thinking as you are breathing out relaxed.
• #2. RELAXATION RESPONSE:
• Dr. Herbert Benson in 1975 published his book titled “The Relaxation Response.”, He showed a simple, non-religious meditation technique that could help patients with insomnia, heart problems, high blood pressure & chronic pain. He took the mystery out of the subject, showing that all one needed to do was consciously relax the muscles, breathe slowly & deeply and find a repetitivbe phrase to keep the brain occupied (i.e. repeating the word “one” over & over in one’s mind). Just taking 20 mins. A day for this exercise will dramatically reduce your stress level. Start by getting comfortable and sit or lie down. Visualize all your muscles in your body relaxing. Start breathing slowly & deeply while counting your breath (in, one, two, three, four & out, one, two, three, four). Then pick a single focus for your mind, such as the word “one” or “peace”, You can pick what ever one word resonates with you. But what this does is it will quiet that “monkey brain” to stop & quiet the mind. When we are in the thick of a stressful moment, I find our mind is either in the past going thru all the coulda, shoulda, woulda, regretful thoughs, or we have tossed ourselves into the future already worrying about all the what if’s yet rarely does any of those what-ifs come to be and we wasted all that time focusing on them, realize ALL power is in the now, The past is history, the future is still a mystery, but the actions you take today is where the power resides because the actions of today will shape your future. The past cannot be changed so let it go, just let it go, I have personally found that when I force myself to be present in the moment most of my fear melts away and I actually feel empowered because I can’t change the past, I can’t read the future, but my here and now, I can deal with…
• #3. SUGAR & CAFFEINE:
• It amazes me how when we are under stress mentally the majority of us crave comfort foods which typically are going to be “junk foods”. Sugar & caffeine top the list for most people. They may give you that brief pick me up, but they are going to drop you like a rock just as fast. Coupled with the fact that they add more stress on the adrenal glands which are already tired and then you end up on that conveyor belt called burned-out. So avoid those sugar treats, and carbohydrate snackies and instead go for the protein and quality fats like nuts. If you feel like you cannot function without your caffeine, realize your adrenals need some system support and supplement with Adrenal Support: http://www.harvestedhealth.mynsp.com
• #4. H2O:
• Yep water.. many of my client’s are what I label as clinically dehydrated, our body needs water, you can go days and days without food, but water is essential, yet people are drinking stuff all day long, unfortunately it rarely seems to be water. Drinking more water can actually make you feel calmer and you sleep better. When you are dehydrated your anxiety levels increase.
• #5. Exercise:
• Why does our body produce those stress hormones? Well, they are gearing your body up to take action, physical action and that’s what makes modern stress such a big problem. The stress hormones gear out body to run, fight or physically work to fight the problem, but our sedentary lifestyle doesn’t offer us the ability to burn off these stress hormones in physical activity. So exercise gives the opportunity to “work off’ those stressful feelings. You don’t have to go join a gym if money is an issue, clean out a closet, go for a walk, scrub the shower or the kitchen floor, clean the garage, wash the car, even better wax the car. Do something physical.
• #6. FEED YOUR NERVES
• Our nervous system a.k.a. Nerves, they need nutrition just like any other part of our body. What do they need? They the healthy fats, butter, coconut oil, nuts, olive oil, flax seed oil avocados, Omega-3 essential fatty acids. The vitamins they require are the B-vitamins which when we are under stress we burn them up like crazy. Vitamin C & pantothenic acid are needed to support the adrenals. Nutri-Calm (www.harvestedhealth.mynsp.com) is a great combo product that supports the health of our nerves. HSN-W (www.harvestedhealth.mynsp.com) has silica which helps the nerves become more resilient because it strengthens the myelin sheath that is the protective coating on our nerves, I refer to it like the protective coating on our electrical plugs that house the wires, if that coating gets damaged and wires are exposed the current running thru the wires can arch out and cause a fire. Same thing with our myelin sheath and our nerves.
• My clients have heard me talk about adaptagenic herbs and what they do is the modulate the signals that are sent from the hypothalamus and pituitary glands causing a reduction of adrenal output of adrenaline and cortisol, which lowers stress levels. They help to break the damaging fight or flight chain reaction patterns in which the body can get stuck due to chronic stress. So by reducing the cortisol levels, these herbs also help boost the immune system. Eleuthero root (www.harvestedhealth.mynsp.com) is an adaptagen. Studies have proved it helps increase stamina, endurance & energy, improve concentration &stimulate male hormone production.
• Gotu Kola, American & Korean Ginseng, Suma, Schizandra berries are all adaptagens. Some of these are in a combination form in the supplement Adapta-max (www.harvestedhealth.mynsp.com), Nervous fatigue formula (www.harvestedhealth.mynsp.com) and SUMA Combination (www.harvestedhealth.mynsp.com). Adding some of these herbal adaptagens can literally make you feel more at ease.
• #7. REST & RELAXATION:
• This one is not to be underestimated. We’ve pretty much determined that you probably won’t be super successful at avoiding stress, but there are ways to reduce how it effects you. When we do something that is pleasurable our body releases hormones & neruotransmitters that counteract the effects of stress. Doing something that gives us pleasure creates more positive benefits than a stressful experience can cause harm. So instead of reducing stress, we should be deliberate in creating pleasure & enjoyment in our lives.
• Anxiety issues are off the charts in our world. Part of that reason is we are overloaded by “choice”. That may not please most of you but the truth of the matter is, we are. We are constantly on the go and truth be told most of us don’t make time for pleasure & recreation. You have to plan time to do things you enjoy it is super important to your emotional and physical health.
• When I bring this up to clients who have just ran down their list of I can’t spend time in the kitchen to eat better because I have… blah, blah, blah… Most of us are too busy to be sick too, but when sick shows up and knocks you off your feet guess what your doing, you are in bed, or stretched out on the couch and where are all those things that you stated you couldn’t move or change, they are waiting for you. I promise…. Steven Horne (AHG), gave an example “ If a wood cutter doesn’t take time to sharpen his saw or his ace, he will find himself working harder & harder while becoming less & less productive. Rest & relaxation is “saw-sharpening” time, it makes you more productive with the rest of your day. If you are busy, you can’t afford to not take time for rest & relaxation.”
• And let me assure you that saying you relax while watching television that really doesn’t count. Majority of TV programs are going to stimulate not relax, they are loaded with action, drama, stimulating background music, or topics too close to our own already stressful lives that just keep our thoughts on the stress when we relate to what we are watching. So TV doesn’t count folks, sorry. Instead, soak in a hot but, go for a massage, listen to relaxing music, take a walk in nature. Laugh and giggle. Take the time to eat slower and actually taste and enjoy your food vs. inhaling and barely chewing. Anything thing that makes you happy, brings you pleasure is going to counteract the effects of stress and reduce your anxiety.
