You Are NOT What You Eat, You ARE What You Can Digest!

intestines

Digestive enzymes enable food’s incredible journey through the body—giving us strength and energy to recharge and live a healthy life. Digestive enzymes act as catalysts as they break down food and make it possible for the body to absorb nutrients and eliminate waste. Although the digestive system is a powerful one, it’s also very delicate.

Taking care of your digestive tract by keeping it clean and providing what it needs plays a major role in the body’s overall health. Many fruits and vegetables contain digestive enzymes. Such enzymes are also beneficial for breaking down proteins and meats.

Today’s diet lacks many of the food-derived digestive enzymes the body needs. This is because cooking, freezing, processing, canning and other food preparation methods kill or significantly deteriorate the strength of food enzymes. Once food is broken down, it passes through the small intestine where the body separates the nutrients from the waste. In many cases, the small intestine suffers from toxic build-up, diminishing the effectiveness of nutrient absorption. Finding a natural colon detoxifier can help recharge your digestive system and relieve it from harmful build-up.

Clean Start one of our best-selling natural body cleanse products, contains nine botanicals that pull toxins from the intestine walls and allow for healthy waste removal.

Benefits:
Supports the natural, everyday cleansing of toxic waste from the body.
Works without posing dangerous side effects.
Improves energy and promotes a feeling of well-being.
How It Works:

Clean Start is a two-week program that supports natural waste elimination to provide a sense of improved energy and well-being. It contains powerful nutrients that help cleanse and detoxify the body.
Psyllium hulls provide fiber and absorb bowel toxins. In fact, the program delivers 10 grams of fiber per day to promote waste removal.

Highly absorbent bentonite clay is often used to support colon health. Aloe vera juice soothes bowel tissue.

Chlorophyll helps prevent odor and counteracts bowel toxins. Stevia herb contains stevioside, a natural constituent that is 300 times sweeter than sugar (sucrose).

Enviro-Detox cleanses the body of many common environmental pollutants.

The formulation includes burdock root, dandelion root, fenugreek seed, ginger rhizome, pepsin, red clover flowers, yellow dock root, marshmallow root extract, sarsaparilla root extract, Bacillus coagulans, cascara sagrada bark, echinacea root extract and milk thistle seed extract.

LBS II combines strong, purgative herbs and protective, gentle and soothing herbs to enhance elimination, increase production of digestive enzymes and soothe the digestive tract. LBS II contains cascara sagrada bark, buckthorn bark, licorice root, capsicum fruit, ginger rhizome, Oregon grape root and rhizome, Turkey rhubarb root, couch grass rhizome and red clover flowers.

Ingredients:
Each drink packet contains psyllium hulls, vegetable fiber, natural apple-cinnamon or wild berry (black currant and raspberry) flavor, potassium citrate, aloe vera inner leaf, malic acid, carrot root extract, stevia leaf extract, sodium copper chlorophyllin and hydrated bentonite. Each capsule pack contains 2 capsules of LBS II and 1 capsule of Enviro-Detox.
Recommended Use:

Take the contents of one cleanse drink packet 15–30 minutes before breakfast and again 15–30 minutes before dinner. Take the contents of 1 capsule packet with breakfast and dinner (twice daily). Mix cleanse packet powder in 8 oz. juice or water. Shake, blend or stir vigorously. Drink immediately. Drink an additional glass of water immediately following this. Drink plenty of water throughout the day.

DIGESTIVE TRACK:

When the digestive tract lacks necessary digestive enzymes and harbors toxic build-up, the abdomen feels uncomfortable, stressed and bloated.

If you suffer from occasional digestive disturbances, consider your diet. Are you providing your body the necessary food enzymes for healthy digestion? Could your digestive tract suffer from toxic build-up?

Try taking one or two capsules of our digestive enzyme supplements (Food Enzymes or Proactazyme) with each meal, clean your digestive tract with a healthy, natural colon cleanse (CleanStart) and notice the difference!

FINDING HEALTH WITH ENZYMES!

What are enzymes? They are said to be the “powerhouse” of every cell in the body. Intertwined with nearly every system in the body, digestive enzymes determine how effectively the body breaks down food. The body can’t function without them. We are born with some digestive enzymes. However, these alone cannot sufficiently break down all of the food that we eat. The body can produce and replenish enzymes; but still it needs more from outside sources. Natural, raw foods have enzymes in them that are designed to assist with the break down of the foods eaten. These are the same molecules that make fruit ripen and then eventually rot.

However, today’s food preparation processes can kill these enzymes, making digestion difficult on the body. If you cook, freeze, dry or can your food, you’ll most likely kill the enzymes your body needs for healthy digestion. As most of today’s diets include some form of processed food, it’s likely that you have an insufficient level of digestive enzymes.

This causes stress on the digestive system, which can lead to indigestion, heartburn, bloating and more. Moreover, digestive stress can affect how many nutrients your body is able to absorb. Often, those with symptoms of digestive stress have a weakened immune system.

Since it’s nearly impossible to maintain a diet of just raw, natural foods, it’s important to supply your body with the essential digestive enzymes it needs. It’s easy to do so with a safe, healthful digestive enzyme supplement that will help you feel better as you find greater health.

So many peeps are walking around in misery, they are bloated, suffering with constipation or IBS, GERD, Acid reflux, heartburn because they are dealing with incomplete digestion and improper food combination.  Most folks are not eating near enough fresh foods ( i.e. fruits and veggies); the majority subsist on over-cooked meats, potatoes, breads, gravy’s, sauces, dead foods like cereals, chips muffins etc.

Support a tired digestive system and realize it goes way beyond the old saying “You are what you eat”, to “You ARE what you can digest!”

WHAT IS ADRENAL BURNOUT?

Adrenal

Feeling irritable? Exhausted? Having trouble sleeping?

Your not alone, today’s fast paced living is stressing folks out, and the stress has been linked to a number of illnesses such as heart disease, high blood pressure, and increased risk for cancer according to Jason Block MD, a Robert Wood Johnson Scholar at Harvard.

Adrenal Burnout goes way beyond a bad day. Chronic stress causes the adrenal glands to release wave after wave of hormones that prep the body for a do or die situation.  Eventually these hormone reserves run low or come up empty.

________________________________________________________________________________

POTENTIAL SYMPTOMS:
achy joints
anxiety, blood sugar issues
brain fog
early morning fatigue
afternoon exhaustion
low sex drive
insomnia memory loss
slow recovery from illness

___________________________________________________________________________________
These are just some of the signs you can show that your adrenal glands could be in overdrive.  Get a Saliva/Urine analysis to accurately measure adrenal stress (QFA Analysis).
According to Elson M. Haas MD, mild stress acts as a useful motivation for activity and productivity.  But too much can generate many symptoms and diseases, medicated by changes in immune function, hormonal response, and biochemical reactions, which then impact the cardiovascular, digestive neurological or musculoskeletal systems.

The brain and pituitary gland respond to stress by releasing adrenocorticotropic hormone ACTH.  This stimulates the adrenals to increase production of the hormones epinephrine, norepinephrine and cortisol, as well as other hormones that influence metabolism and water balance.
With extreme stress, the adrenal gland ramps up your fight or flight reaction, which sharpens the senses and raises theheart rate, while slowing digestion and more important functions then take over.  But adrenaline increases blood pressure, adds stress on the heart, and raises blood sugar, increasing metabolic rate. Over time, our ability to cope with stress and to ounce back after a crisis can be compromised.
HOW DOES ONE FEED THE ADRENAL GLANDS?
If you are stressed out, your adrenal pilot light is probably burning 24/7.  Experiencing body aches, digestive distress, fatigue, nervousness, and sleep issues, are all signals you need to slow down and rest and recharge your batteries.  Your pilot light can blow out and your adrenals can slow down to a crawl.  Noticing that you are gaining weight in the belly area that no matter how much you exercise it won’t cooperate is another way you can begin to realize your adrenals are probably on overload.

Eating a healthier whole food diet, and making your mealtime as relaxins as possible. Ditch the cell phones, turn off the television and relax while eating your meals.  Cut out coffee, pop and other stimulants, they may temporarily feel like they are giving you energy, but after their affect they drop you like a hot rock.  Refined carbohydrated will increase blood sugar imbalances which due to adrenal overload are already running high.
Antioxidants, A, C, E, selenium and zinc are usually depleted during stress, put them back with a high quality whole food supplement.  Vitamin C offers cellular protecton and immune support, while allowing the adrenals to produce more cortisone and epinephrine.  Because this antioxidant is rapidly utilized and little gets stored in the body, take 1 to 2 grams in divided doses, every day if you are feeling stressed.  (that’s equivalent to 2000 mg.)
In a recent study, the B vitamin Choline which is a precursor for acetylcholine in the central nervous system was inversely associated with anxiety.  Taking more than the RDA for all the asily depleted B vitamins in two divided doses during the day but not in the evening as they can prevent sleep, according to Dr. Haas.

RESTORE BALANCE WITH HERBS:
Adrenals balance neurotransmitters, relieve anxiety, and ease you into restful sleep.  Adaptogens, medicinal plants that enhance your resistance to stress while increasing concentration and endurance, are pretty effective.

Rhodiola, Eleutrero (Siberian Ginseng), can be very helpful.  Conventional medicine barley recognizes adrenal fatigue, so don’t expect to find numerous double-blind placebo-controlled trials on this class of herbs.
Respected herbalists, however, have long recognized their balancing benefits.  When stress stops, adaptogens help the adrenal glands shut off faster.  Thses herbs also support adrenal function by allowing cells in the body access to more energy and by preventing oxidative damage.  For overall adrenal support Americn ginseng, ashwagandha, cordyceps, holy basil, licorice root, reishi, schisandra offer amazing adrenal support.  If you are generally fatigued yet have sleep issues, reach for herbal formulas that contain American ginseng, chinese wild yam, eleuthero, kudzu, licorice root, reishi, and schisandra.  Chronic stress and anxiety almost always affect the digestion process.  Taking bitters for better digestion, absorption and elimination before meals.
COMPLIMENTARY CHOICES:
Traditional Chinese medicine seeks to rebalance the body by supporting digestion and the liver as well as adrenals, making detoxification useful after intense stress.  Other effective holistic approaches include acuppuncture and relaxation techniques.  Last but not least, begin and end your day with something uplifting and spiritual that brings you outside of yourself and creates peace.

WHAT ARE ADRENAL GLAND?
They are a pair of triangular shaped organs that rest on top of the kidneys.  Each gland normally weights about 5 grams and is made up of two parts: the cortex, or outer sections, which is repsonsible for the production of coretisone, and the medulla, or central section which secretes adrenaline.
The cortex helps to maintain the salt and water balance in the body.  It is also involved in metabolism of carbohydrates and the regulation of lood sugar.  The cortex also is responsible for prodcing a sex hormone similar to that secreted by the testes.
The medulla produces the hormone epinephrine, also called adrenaline, when the body is under stress.  This hormone speeds up the rate of metabolism and produces other physiological changes designed to hep the body cope with danger.

  • ________________________________________________________________________________________
Reduced adrenal function may be indicated by:
    weakness and muscle wasting
    lethargy
    dizziness
    headaches
    memory issues
    food cravings
    allergies
    blood sugar issues
If the cortex is seriously underactive, a rare condition called Addison’s disease may develop, Symptoms include:
    fatigue
    loss of appetite
    dizziness
    fainting
    nausea
    moodiness
    decrease in body hair
    inability to cope with stress
    feeling cold
discoloration and darkening of the skin, (i.e. knees, elbows, scars, skin folds and creases in the palms are more noticeable when exposed to sun
mouth and freckles may appear darker
bands of pigment running the length of the nails and darkening of the hair.
  • _________________________________________________________________________________________
Cushing’s syndrome is a rare disorder caused by an over active adrenal cortex. Persons’ with Cushing’s syndrome take on a characteristic appearance: they generally are heavy in the abdomen and buttocks but have very thin limbs, and rounded moon faces.  Muscular weakness and wasting of muscles are also characteristic.  Round, red marks mimicking acne may appear on the face and eyelids may appear swollen.  Increased growth of body hair is common and woman may grow mustaches and in some cases beards.  Folks with Cushing’s generally are more prone to illness and take longer to heal.  Thinning of the skin from Cushing’s syndrome often leads to stretch marks and bruising.

The functioning of the adrenal glands can be impaired as a result of the extensive use of cortisone therapy for non endocrine disease, like arthritis and asthma.  The long term use of cortisone drugs can cause the adrenals to shrink in size.  Poor nutritional habits, smoking and alcohol and drug abuse can contribute toa drenal failure.

Essential nutrients:
Vitamin B complex: all B vitamins are necessary for adrenal function.
L-Tyrosine: 500 mg. daily on empty stomach, take with water or juice NOT with milk. ( Do not take L-tyrosine if you are taking an MAO inhibitor drug.)
Raw adrenal cortex glandulars:
Liquid Chlorophyll ES helps to keep the blood clean.
Coenzyme Q10 carries oxygen to all glands
Germanium Essential Oil:  enhances immune function (diffuse or apply topically with carrier oil to soles of both feet)
Potassium 99mg. daily needed to balance sodium, potassium is lost with this disorder.

ADRENAL GLAND FUNCTION SELF-TEST
Normally systolic blood pressure which is the 1st number in measurement of blood pressure i.e. 120/80 is approximately 10 points higher when you are standing than when you are lying down.  If the adrenal glands are not functioning properly, however, this may not be the case.

Take and compare the two blood pressure readings, one while lying downa nd one while standing.  1st, lie down and rest for 5 minutes, then take your blood pressure.  Stand up and immediately take your blood pressure again.  If your pressure reading is lower after you stand up, suspect reduced adrenal gland function.  The degree to which the blood pressure drops upon standing is often proportionate to the degree of hypo-adrenalism.

FOOD SUGGESTIONS:
Plenty of fresh frutis and veggies, green leafy ones.  Brewer’s yeast, brown rice, legumes, nuts, olive and safflower oils, seeds, wheat germ and whole grains.
Deep water ocean fish, salmon or tune at least 3 times per week.
Garlic, onions, shiitake mushrooms, pearl barley as these foods contain germanium a powerful stimulant of the immune system.
Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and tobacco these are toxic to the adrenal and other glands.
Get regular moderate exercise because exercise stimulates the adrenal glands and helps to relieve stress.
Don’t take these symptoms for granted, whenever our body displays symptoms it is the body’s way of alerting you that there are nutritional deficiencies, so FEED the body what it needs, and allow your body to be the messenger folks.

To Know More….The Nuts & Bolts

SANYO DIGITAL CAMERA

Have you every thought about starting a diet or getting healthier but didn’t? Or perhaps you started one and then quit?  What about going to the gym or committing to yourself to become more active and healthy?  I am sure everyone has but the real question is, what is really going on with you in these situation?
The truth is that your body tells you daily that you can be doing better.  It is constantly sending you messages (masked as symptoms) for you to eat better, lose weight, sleep deeper, move more and make extra time for self-love so that you can have more energy, age slower, experience an active sex drive and enjoy boundless health.  It is these signals that send a surge of motivation to change and to act.  The problem is that your deep rooted self-sabotaging habits revolt and work on overdrive to keep you in familiar routines by prioritizing things far less important before your own health.

Here is what I want for each one of my clients:

  • I want you to learn to listen to your body when it is speaking to you, it’s telling you what it needs.
  • I want you to live longer.
  • I want you to age appropriately
  • I want those wrinkles to soften and for you to have beautiful skin.
  • I want you to lose weight, if necessary and have more energy
  • I want your organs to thrive and to stay in good shape for your entire life.
  • I want what your body wants and I jump in heart and soul to equip you with the tools to start your transformation.
  • I partner with the part of you that motivates you to act and get healthy and I battle against the part of you that tries to stop you from achieving greater health.
  • I stay consistent until habits merge with your goals.
  • BUT, you are the one who has to do the work!

Integrative Medicine’s approach to health and medical treatment is an entirely different way of thinking.  Instead of just treating symptoms, I look upstream as far as I can to find the cause of health issues.  Where conventional medicine is focused on finding disease that can be treated with drugs or surgery, a functional integrative approach looks for the root causes and makes that the starting point.

An integrative functional approach does not mean that I will just replace your medicines with herbs.  That is still just managing symptoms.  A typical plan will likely address diet, sleep, relationships, stress and exercise.  I might however, use supplements and herbs to help manage symptoms while we work on the deeper changes.  I may also decide to incorporate other modalities like chiropractic, acupuncture which I have practitioners who I partner with for referrals.

Each person is unique, and therefore assessment and programs are tailored to your situation.  I discuss options and decide together what you want to tackle, and strategize how to actually accomplish your goals.

If you want to know more about me, here are some questions that I am often asked that may be helpful to you:

  1. What type of clients do you work best with?

I see the best results with those who have reached many of their goals in life and now feel like their health is holding them back.  They are ready to take the steps needed to change their health and are open to trying a new approach.  They don’t have to be gourmet chefs, but  at least be open to learning and experiencing greater comfort and know-how in their own kitchen.

2. How is what you offer different than traditional nutritionists?

Well typically most nutritionists offer solutions that stick to the guidelines which follow the food pyramid from the ADA.  I take into consideration that each person is unique in their own right which means they each have their own nutritional needs.  What works for one person, isn’t going to be the best across the board,  We are not a one size fits all world.

My clients look to me for personalized coaching and support on things as specific as food allergies, food sensitivities, digestive issues, yeast overgrowth, endocrine imbalances (hormonal), blood pressure and cholesterol balance, blood sugar control through their diet and as general as “how can I get meals on my table faster?”  While most nutritionists dwell on lists of good/bad foods.  I work with clients to create a  whole food diet that incorporates of course more plants and for those that still want meat in their diets as some body types actually require the addition of meat into their nutritional routine.  So helping them to reach their goals in a way that can be flexible and fun and benefits the health and well being of their entire family, so they don’t feel like they are making separate meals for everyone. No one has time to feel like a short order cook.

3. What is your approach to eating healthy?

Well you will be excited to hear it doesn’t have to turn your busy, successful lifestyle upside down and doesn’t involve gimmicks or be overly expensive.  You do have to be willing to spend time in your kitchen preparing whole foods and I also offer you guidance on how not to derail yourself when traveling and eating out.  I can offer you short cut suggestions and teach you how to incorporate prep -cooking techniques that will be time well spent to move you from the kitchen to the dining table with less hassle.

4.  What’s it like working with you once I become a client?

After we complete your initial session, which consists of a one-hour private consultation where we get to meet each other and see if we are the right fit, you can expect to make the transition a pleasurable part of your life.

I provide on-going support during and in-between our sessions to make sure you have the guidance needed to reach all of your health goals.  We can speak over the phone for our weekly calls depending on what program you choose, and I’ll outline up to three, personalized, very simple actions steps to upgrade your nutrition at each session.

Each session will build upon the previous one, creating momentum and lasting results, delivered with lots of support and encouragement.

5.  How can I sample your work before I sign up?

You can sign up for my FREE blog .  Once you have added your email address you will always receive notification every time I post a new article, recipe or health tip.  This is a great way for you to get to know me, my work and if it feels like it’s a fit to what you’ve been looking for. So you can take the time to pour through the numerous topics, recipes and anatomy lessons I have there.

6. What kind of programs do you offer?

I invite you to take a look at my programs here.  I offer a range of programs for different needs, and budgets and if I feel that I can absolutely help you, I’ll go over them in great detail with you in your initial session.  By the way, I offer telephone sessions too so geography doesn’t have to be an issue.

7. So what does it take to experience the benefits of working together?

In over a decade of professional teaching and mentoring and consulting, here are what I believe to be the necessary steps to reach your physical, emotional and wellness goals.  These 4 steps are important for your success:

  1. Clarify: The first step is knowing what results you want to achieve.  What is your reason for a more natural approach for supporting your health? What is the end result you desire?  You will need to get clear on the big picture of your personal journey and then step two becomes effortless.
  2. Commit:  Without a commitment to regular application, as with anything in life, results can be expected to be minimal.  Many people never move past step two because they have not found the greater purpose for what being healthy is supposed to feel like.  If you find yourself struggling, repeat step one.  The bottom line: what you put into any program is what you will get out.
  3. Direct: As you move further into making your lifestyle changes, your willpower will get stronger and you will find your drive and desire enhancing.  This comes with proper direction and support of a good teacher.  For some it will be about re-connecting with their love of self in a natural and non-dogmatic way; for others it will be about learning new life strategies for enhancing everyday living; for some it will be about removing self-limiting and self-destructive behaviors that hinder their forward progress and others their practice will be about cultivating energy for health, vitality, self-love, anti-aging support, anxiety-relief and body confidence and really this list of positives is ongoing.
  4. Application: Everything you will learn in your sessions spent with me will be applicable to everyday living.  You will learn how to apply what you learn in each session to improve the quality of your life through stronger health and vitality.  Your wealth is in your health; when you are feeling healthy and strong everything else in life is achievable.
  5. Refine: The nature of learning new habits and applying as well as experiencing the benefits provides ample opportunities to make subtle, yet powerful adjustments to suit your unique lifestyle and schedules.  This results in making who you are and everything you do better.
  6. Live: with ongoing practice, you will be applying and experiencing the benefits and deeper insights that equip you with the tools for continuous personal growth that can be used to assist you in living fully and achieving your personal and even professional goals.  When we feel clear headed and have higher levels of physical energy it boosts our productivity in all levels of what we call “our lives.”

I bring a combination of my professional qualifications, consulting experience and personal journey to all my consultations allow me to share…

HEALTHY LIVING PRINCIPLE #1

HOME IS WHERE HEALTHY LIVING STARTS.

True health begins at home, the heart of where we rest and recharge.  The relationships we have with ourselves, our partners, families, and physical dwelling impact hugely on and may determine the state of our health.  Integrating healthy lifestyle and eating habits into our home environment is one of the most powerful tools we have over our health and long-term wellness and happiness.

HEALTHY LIVING PRINCIPLE #2

HEALTHY HOMES CREATE HEALTHY FUTURES.

Children are the future; they are the next generation.  They hold in their power the ability to build a world greater than we ever could have fathomed for ourselves.  Healthy children from a healthy  living home will yield healthy leaders, communities, and life.. Children are like sponges.  They absorb what is around them.  Engage in healthy living, healthy foods, and self-nurture and you will raise children where healthy living is second nature. We must lead by example, you won’t fool them into being healthy.

HEALTHY LIVING PRINCIPLE #3

FINDING YOUR OWN ROUTINE IS THE NEW LIFE BALANCE.

I believe each person  brings with them a unique life routine.  We need to honor our respective rhythm or we risk being overly influenced by our peers and society.

Consistently staying in sync with our unique human blueprint allows us to thrive in every aspect of our lives.  Authenticity in emotional, social, mental, spiritual and physical realms keeps us connected to our source and feeds that inner calm.

Reconnecting to our inner selves may always feel like a journey, but just as you pause and reflect upon different aspects in your life; perhaps your career or life direction, it is important from time to time to take a step back and reflect on your daily rhythms/routines; your food choices, sleep patterns, exercise and more – then the hard part is to reevaluate whether or not they are serving you in a positive or negative way.

HEALTHY LIVING PRINCIPLE #4

EDUCATION EMPOWERS.

Once you learn the various health and nutritional options you do have, you will feel empowered to make new choices that prove to be both satisfying and beneficial, and your desire to have a body, mind and soul that blossoms into it’s healthier version by design.

HEALTHY LIVING PRINCIPLE #5

SMALL CHANGES, BRING BIG RESULTS.

Healthy living doesn’t translate into being deprived…. It is about incorporating slight changes that yield big gains.  Its really is about tailoring your efforts to your circumstances and your needs so that everything you implement works for you and your life.

HEALTHY LIVING PRINCIPLE #6

FOOD AFFECTS EVERYTHING AND CAN ENHANCE YOUR LIFE.

The quality of the food you put into your body influences the quality of your thoughts and your thoughts will color every experience in your life.  Eating healthier leads to a clean and clear body, mind and soul.  Choose wisely instead of leaning on convenience due to lack of planning ahead for your daily schedule.

HEALTHY LIVING PRINCIPLE #7

YOU HAVE THE POWER.

No one can improve your health but yourself.  No one can take responsibility for your choices.  No one can control you unless you allow them too.  Taking ALL responsibility may seem daunting, but with all responsibility also comes all the power.  The power is yours.  Own it by empowering yourself.  I will show you how when we work together.

What Happens To The Food You Eat?

intestinesThe easiest analogy I can put forth would be comparing one’s body to that of a chemical engine, it accepts what one eats as fuel.  Sometimes it decides some of the fuel is unacceptable by discarding it by throwing it back up, or for some shooting it through quickly and sending it out the south pole region.  Sometimes, it will decide to store it in the fat cells to cushion the body against leaner times; and some it will gratefully use to fire its countless tiny cell furnaces after it applies some complex biochemical treatment.

If the energy output in the food one recently fed their engine is nutritionally deficient, the body will insist you send more through hunger triggers and one has the urge to raid the kitchen again. Which is why you can devour an entire bag of potato chips and still feel hungry, nutritionally they were empty!

If any of you reading have ever watched one of those survival shows, like “Naked and Afraid”, the people on the show sometimes  will go for the full 21 days with nothing more than water, and they always tell at the end of the show how much weight each one lost.  During a survival mode such as that; the body will use up the fat deposits first to feed the engine, then it will turn to breaking down muscle tissue, (eating itself).  When folks start getting sick and notice their body is breaking down is when the their engine has been being fed the wrong kind of fuel too many times, leaving the body to have to compensate with that which the body has stored.

Folks, our digestive system is basically a chemical refinery that is able to manufacture its own fuels and is capable of delivering energy from those raw materials: the proteins, fats, carbohydrates (that are broken down into starches and sugars), vitamins and minerals.  This whole process of digestion takes place the minute we send food into our mouth and down the esophagus into the stomach.

When we chew our food and it’s mixed with our saliva digestion begins.  Our digestive system is like that of a conveyor belt, there are various stations where other chemicals are contributed to convert the food/fuel so our engines can use it by breaking down, diluting and dissolving as well as adding some chemicals and even removing others.

When the food mixes with our saliva which is the first set of digestive enzymes the food comes into contact with, these enzymes are special protein molecules that act as “catalysts” the definition of catalysts: a substance that increases the rate of a chemical reaction without itself undergoing any permanent chemical change. So the job of these catalysts /Enzymes is to assist the body/engine in metabolizing, which is the what the body does to convert this fuel into energy.  The enzymes our body produces are called the spark plugs of life, we cannot process a single morsel of any food without them. Yet, when we are eating foods that are loaded with chemical preservatives or “enzyme inhibitors”, the very structure  of our enzymes that the body produces can be altered, which is why we see so many folks struggling with digestive issues.

The Stomach secretions, the enzymes from the pancreas, the liver and the glands lining the small intestines all act on the passing food.  As the food has been touched by the actions of these enzymes and ferments then the other catalytic agents of reduction in the mouth and stomach is now spread out, as it were, upon a huge carpet.  This carpet area is the lining of our small intestines, which is about 26 feet long and is covered with millions of villi, which are like little fingers that are constantly moving back and forth, they are sticking out from the lining of the small intestine.

So when we eat something that has an irritating effect, the bowel is going to either try to get rid of it quickly which we experience as diarrhea, or it puts a spastic clamp on the intestines to keep the irritating substances from moving which we experience as constipation.

This rich lining of delicate sensitive cells is our body’s first defense level, it fights the good fight against the absorption of unnatural and detrimental food elements.  Yet repeated absorption of these elements produces over time inflammation and even destruction of our delicate lining.  That is when the blood in these villi become so overcharged with toxic elements that elements of it is allowed to enter into the blood stream.

So, as these digested food particles are spread over our intestinal carpet to be absorbed, two important issues present themselves:  what is the quality of the food and the quantity?

If we overeat, that makes it difficult to digest, and too much is saved/absorbed.  The villi have no regulating ability to indicate how much to absorb.  This contributes to folks being overweight or they feel sick.

Typically when we sit down for a meal, we feast on a variety of foods.  Understanding that the way our body has to break down different elements in our foods, realizing that when we throw to many different foods in the same meal, can result in incomplete digestion.  How does that FEEL:

*bloating

*feeling full for hours

*sleepy after eating

When clients come to me with digestive issues, even food sensitivities, what ends up happening is we have to simplify their diet to reduce the work load on their digestive system.

Cells called small lymphocytes, carry food needed for growth and reproduction of our body’s cells.  This food is protein in nature, but before it can be used by the body’s cells, an iodine value must be added to it by the thyroid gland. The body is so incredibly amazing, the villi that line the small intestine have two sets of vessels, they have blood vessels and lymph vessels.  These lymph vessels are what transport lymphocytes and other white blood cells.  So during digestion it requires a large amount of lymphocytes, these enter the lymph vessels, and so the body will have enough available, God placed the largest organ for manufacture of these lymphocytes close to the small intestine.  That would be the spleen, whose function is to send armies of lymphocytes to the villi after we eat.

We hear about the importance of “amino acids”, and how they are building blocks in our body.  Well, as the lymphocytes are being pushed through these lymph channels of our villi, they absorb amino acids, which are the digested form of proteins.  They then get circulated toward a large duct, that would be the thoracic duct, which moves them to the subclavian vein into which the thoracic duct empties, just above the point where the secretion that comes from the thyroid gland is released into the same vein.  Now, TELL me this isn’t SUPER COOL……this all takes place and we don’t see it, we don’t feel it, but we can’t live without these functions!

It’s at this point that the lymphocytes are exposed to the iodine from the thyroid which “iodizes” their amino acids, which is what we need for cell growth and reproduction.  These lymphocytes then circulate in the blood vessels or lymph vessels, or sometimes cut right through the tissues to a needed location.  So after this cycle occurs these lymphocytes return to the spleen, where they either get disintegrated or are sent on again to the villi to cycle again.

This concept of digestion was introduced and published in the December, 1928, Journal of Laboratory and Clinical Medicine.

I impress on my clients who are parents, WHAT you feed your children is important! During adolescent years lymphocytes are needed in larger than normal amounts, the stages of growth and repair that takes place during childhood and until the end of adolescence is what sets the very foundation of health as our kiddo’s enter adulthood. During this period God has supplied an extra lymphocyte-manufacturing center which would be the thymus gland, which begins to shrink after adolescence.  The thymus is by the thyroid so that iodine is readily available.  So realize that the foundation of our children’s health future should be supplied with the very best building material we can supply.  Fast food, like chicken nuggets, and French fries and soda, and boat loads of refined sugary foods; isn’t going to make that happen.

CARBOHYDRATES:

When we eat carbs and complex sugars our digestive system reduces those to simple glucose, which the blood vessels of the villi absorb and that glucose gets burned directly in our muscles.  The body receives its muscular energy and heat from this.  Fats are also combustible, but they usually burn better with the carbohydrate flame.  (I’ll touch more on this on a later post)

EMOTIONS:

Gut and psychology go together.  How one “feels” is really dependent on how your food processor (digestion system) is processing.   If we pay attention and “watch” people, take a holiday meal, some families laugh at the fact that when their whole family gets together, many times someone causes an uproar.  If you take notice most of that tends to happen AFTER the meal has been eaten.   That’s when emotions run high.  Watch the kiddo’s at a holiday function, after the sweets are served up, the kids get hyper, weepy, or can toss some fits.  What we eat makes us who we are, and our emotions are predicated on what takes place in the gut.  I’ll dig deeper on that in a different post.

Revelation: You Can Be Healthy

healthy%20living%20logo%20a

A little practitioner back ground on “ME”… I have never considered myself to be any sort of specialist! Nope… what I have come to realize is that folks who seek out my services are usually disappointed in allopathic medical routes – especially when the round after round of prescriptions that are recommended appear to merely mask their symptoms imprisoned in their body. They seek me out for dietary reform, usually because they have found out that food has something to do with their issues and physical symptoms.  The light bulb starts to burn brighter as they realize that whatever illness or health issue they are battling didn’t just decide that hey, Suzie Whatsherface looks like a good person to set up house keeping inside of, they have realized something that has been occurring  on a consistent basis had to have some sort of role to play in why they feel like they feel or why they are sick!

Many seek me out with noble intentions, willing to follow some nutritional advice and willing to try to experience better health through dietary and lifestyle changes.  Those folks are for obvious reasons easier to work with.

However, the average peep is more reluctant to change the diet routine they have followed all their lives.  They are not aware that nearly all bad food habits are actually “stimulation habits” that is, the body has almost automatically found out what makes it feel better for a mere half hour or so and what will mask the depression and fatigue for a short blink of time.  Some folks will eat a good amount of salt, others reach for their meat washed down with their choice of alcoholic beverages, while others well their go-to relief food of choice is sweets or a combo of foods that will prove to add to their actual health issues, not realizing that some of those very cravings are pointing to various nutrient issues that their bodies are actually deficient in.

Then when I take away their stimulation , they feel weak and depressed, they may get headaches and/or other unpleasant physical side-effects for a while as their body adjusts to the new food intake routine and the toxic overload is being taken to the proverbial curb.  I actually had a client who sent me an email about 4 days into their program and the body of the email read only this:  I LOVE MY PRACTITIONER, I LOVE MY NUTRITIONIST, I HATE THIS FOOD ROUTINE! with a bunch of emoji hearts to follow.  Sometimes, it’s a love/hate relationship…  I try to warn my clients that some not so pleasant symptoms can jump to the forefront.  This is usually that make or break moment as some clients decide that this lifestyle/nutritional reform just isn’t their cup of tea.  They came for immediate relief and instead initially feel worse. So they return to their stimulation habits.  It is a tragic decision, yet its one I cannot fight!

The other part of what I offer when I work with someone is I start them on the road called “understanding how MY body actually works”.  Some may ask questions, but most don’t seek to understand the inner workings, and  the truth is most practitioners  in their practices deal day in and day out with folks who are unthinking and who treat their bodies – which I believe to be the most priceless of ones possessions, with about the same reckless abandon of a toddler breaking in a new toy.  I ran across an old article from Life magazine from (December 7, 1962) that said:

“The body… runs on food and oxygen much as an auto runs on gasoline and oxygen. But right there the comparison ends. If it is not to stall or sputter, the auto must be fed exactly what it needs just when it needs it.  The body’s fuel system, on the other hand, is subject to the whimsical tastes and cravings of its proprietor.  It can handle extra food when it is already full and can go without when it is empty. And it must tolerate surprise doses of gin, smoke and really hot chili.  It does this heroic job remarkable well… Though people often think of the stomach as a finicky, delicate organ, it is actually so rugged it can tolerate virtually anything that is not downright poisonous or corrosive.”

I laughed out loud in the library when I read this because I thought WOW, this is true, our digestive system is always accommodating, and can tolerate many strange and foreign things we throw down the hatch. Yet sooner or later folks, depending on its present state and hereditary health factors, guess what?  IT BREAKS DOWN! We welcome almost with open arms dis-ease and illness.  The body becomes invaded through our fuel processing system as well as its transportation system through the digestive channel, which when our digestive system (food processor) breaks down we have issues.  When the fuel pump (heart) is impaired, heart disease stakes its rightful claim.  If the digestive system is overloaded too long with improper food residues, the coronary arteries get hard and a heart attack can sign its name in our guest book.  If the air you breathe is polluted, you get the additional signature in the guest book called respiratory issues.  If the water you drink is loaded with chlorine and fluorine, your body can be irritated by the caustic action, that also interferes with how one’s thyroid is able to uptake proper amounts of iodine it needs.  If your teeth are neglected, many suffer malnutrition because truth be told you can’t eat a wide range of healthy foods if you cannot “CHEW” it properly so one has to avoid certain hard to chew foods.

The other hard to swallow truth is even with an abundance of GOOD foods to choose from at all grocery stores, most folks rarely choose those.  They choose pre-cooked in a box breakfast foods, cookies, donuts, lets swallow those with a hot cup of java to get our morning rolling, or let’s have some white bread and toss in some thick gravy to stick to the ribs, ummmmmmm these are the breakfasts of champions?  If we are going to choose to exist on lifeless, over processed, insecticide sprayed foods: saturated with chemicals, then add coffee, tea, alcohol, chocolate, sweetened carbonated drinks, medicate an exhausted system with “ENERGY” drinks that are pure chemicals too, and we get MAD when we are told we have a disease, or any other serious health issue.  We act like we didn’t deserve it, yet if we hit replay and go back over the use and abuse so to speak, and if we are willing to be honest with ourselves; our choices all but invited in the issue. The truth is if we treated our cars like most do their bodies, their cars would be in the junk yard.

I wrote another piece called “Your body: A do it yourself repair shop”, but if your repair shop (body) doesn’t have the proper tools to work with why are you shocked that NO work has been done?  The truth is this isn’t something that has just popped on the scene in the past 50 yrs. either, A Frenchman, Constantin Volney, observed the diet of farmers in New England 164 years ago, He termed the following menu “deplorable”:

“In the morning at breakfast they douse their stomachs with a quart of hot water impregnated with tea or so slightly with coffee that it is mere colored water; and they could swallow almost without thinking hot bread half-baked, toast soaked in butter, cheese of the fattest kind, slices of salt or hung beef, ham, etc., all of which is nearly insoluble. At dinner they have boiled pastes under the name of puddings, and their sauces even for roast beef are melted butter; then potatoes and turnips swimming in hog’s lard, butter or fat.  Under the name of pie or pudding, their pastry is nothing but a greasy paste, never sufficiently baked.”

Guess what the top job in that era was; who were the folks making the big bucks?… Those that made dentures, yep false teeth, and they were skillfully made from hickory wood, and they are PRIZED today by antique collectors, which cracks me up, not sure why someone wants a set of wooden false teeth hickory wood or not sitting on a shelf as a trinket, folks are unique I suppose.

One of mans most valuable possession has been his body’s ability to repair itself. Even animals have that built-in button for survival.  Ever seen your dog go outside and eat grass? How about the wounded cat that licks its wounds clean; the lice-infested bird that wallows in dust?  This primitive instinct, is at the root of all the healing arts; it is as ancient as life itself, as useful to the first folks as it is to us today. Why, then, have we forgotten it and left it behind us?

WHY DO WE MEMORIZE USELESS INFORMATION?

I’ve always asked myself this burning question?  How come baseball fans can tell you the last World Series scores, some peeps can remember a poem that they were made to memorize in school as a child.  I can still recite commercial jingles from the 1960’s and 70’s, or I remember School House Rock from Saturday morning cartoons as a child, I still to this day can SING the preamble to the Constitution.  Some of the things we choose to memorize, that in truth is just stuff, it’s not likely being able to blurt out what the final score of the World Series in 1937 is going to prove useful in your everyday life, it may earn ya some bucks if that question comes up and your on the game show Jeopardy .  Yet truth is many are baffled and confused about the own inner workings of their body, and when it’s under attack with pain, and breakdown, they can’t trouble shoot to lead them back to the cause.  I use this analogy with clients all the time, that symptoms are not your enemy, they are your body’s built-in 911 call center, and your dash-board lights are flashing service something, and we ignore it or paste over it with something that will dull the light or better yet pull the fuse in the form of a pain-killer so we don’t feel it anymore, but that doesn’t mean you fixed the issue!

Most don’t take much interest in the inner workings of their body until they get sick, then they begin to study and take a crash course.  We pay attention most of the time to what we see on the outside, the skin, hair, nails, our weight.  I am always amazed when I get clients and by the way; this statement is one I hear frequently.  “I DON’T HAVE TIME TO FEEL LIKE THIS”…. and I have to be honest with them and say well, this didn’t just jump on the scene yesterday, it’s been brewing beneath the surface for quite some time, you chose to ignore the early 911 signs. When you are holding water we call that edema, or you have a boil on the skin somewhere your body is forever fighting a biological batter for survival, that is what it is programmed to do, so these body responses are actually wise, the body’s way of calling for a complete quarantine, a thick barricade of inflammatory tissue to prevent the enemy (microbes or poisons) from spreading.  Comfortable… NO,  Genius, YES!

There is a process, inflammation triggers pain to prevent you from using something that is injured. Ever sprain an ankle? The first thing it does is swell up, then the swelling triggers pain, that’s so you don’t walk on it, but…. we take pain killers, and wrap it up so we can still use it and wonder why it takes so much longer to heal? Oh,, cuz we don’t have time for this….

DISEASE: CLASS 101

To understand disease you need to understand the way the living cell is comprised. Every walking, talking, breathing person on planet earth is composed of more than a trillion cells, and those cells are tremendously complicated in their mechanics.  When the body becomes diseased, its cells turn abnormal in a variety of ways.

There are 2 classes of disease: Infectious which is caused by viruses or bacteria entering into the body; degenerative, caused, in general, by toxic substances manufactured by the disturbed organs themselves or by something foreign in our food or air.  When your body is fighting against any of these, (the wonder of your body “fearfully and wonderfully made,) it’s job at the front line of defense, is to neutralize the offender.

According to Dr. Hans Selye in “The Stress of Life,” “pain, though an unwelcome intruder, serves a useful purpose.  In disease, it is a warning given by nature to enforce rest as an aid to healing.  It is also a warning that we may have suffered an injury.  The nerve endings, receptors, transmit a message along the nerve pathways by electrical impulses to the brain, and we experience pain as a reaction.  A variety of sensory stimuli can trigger pain: chemical; mechanical, such as twisting of a limb or pressure; thermal, as extreme cold, or heat; or electrical.  When there is inflammation because of disease or injury, there is usually a combination of mechanical pressure and chemical irritation.  Pain is always a warning that something is amiss; thus, to the physician, it is one of the most important symptoms of disease.”

Where I tend to differ with others in my field, some believe that certain aches, pains and debilitating health issues are part of our aging process…. I disagree that this is normal and what one should look forward too.  I believe that real health is so much more.  It is achieved by working with the laws of nature; and when we break those laws, we get sick. I don’t believe that being healthy is a certificate you are awarded by being born, I believe that to remain healthy one needs to be taking ACTIVE participation in living as healthy as they can.  If one takes the time to do the research, it’s on the internet, you will find multiple articles that state the American people take more prescription medications and submit their bodies to more surgeries and vaccinations than that of any other country!  Yet next to digestive issues which is what tops the charts for most doctor visits, the next would be anxiety about the state of ones health when they don’t feel good.

Sometimes folks want to hold my feet to the fire because I speak too blunt.  Yet I personally believe that another reason folks stay in the dark is because too many topics are not addressed straight on.  I’m going to toss this out in the open. Health is NOT something that comes in a capsule or something you can buy at the local drugstore.  If you work with the natural laws of nature, I believe that ANYONE can AFFORD to be healthy.  By God’s design our body is orchestrated and assembled as a near perfect machine in its inner and outer workings.  So many actions that are taking place within that you are completely unaware of that the body performs all with one reason, to keep the body as healthy as possible. That alone is a miracle .  Yet through I don’t know, maybe ignorance, fear and greed the proverbial monkey wrench is tossed into the workings of our miracle machine (body).  The truth is “health is simple; few have it.” said Dr. Bieler.

BASIC FOOD FOUNDATION:

Let me share some of what I’ve learned and applied over the years.  Take for example a vegetable from the squash family; Zucchini, it doesn’t offer a whole bunch of flavor it’s actually pretty bland tasting, yet its super rich in sodium.  Sodium, is one of the most important elements our body needs to balance alkalinity. (No table salt will NOT fill the bill in performing the same need in the body). So zucchini is a super healthy veggie to add to one’s salad, steam, add to some mixed veggie dish, juice etc.  Now if we move onto a key player in the body which is our liver, that organ is a storehouse of sodium, which sodium is needed to maintain the acid/alkaline equilibrium in our bodies.  We cannot be healthy without this balance.  So, that bland little zucchini is both food and medicine and if you know you have a sick liver, guess what is a good thing to start adding daily to ones food choices to restore an exhausted liver.  ZUCCHINI….

When I’m working with clients I try to teach them how to incorporate foods therapeutically, and to get “back to basics”.  I do not  have any “miracle pills.”  There are plenty of folks out there already peddling to those who are sick and tired of being sick and tired and want  what is claimed to be a quick fix like it was yesterday; if that is what your heart is looking for, that’s probably where you will feel more comfortable. Do I ever recommend nutritional supplementation?  Yes, I do, I also apply Orthomolecular Nutrition into the mix when I am working with a client.  But the foundation is all based around food.

I Work with my clients and teach them how their body works, and help them glide into lifestyle changes that are going to do a body good!  I equip them with tools, it’s up to THEM to apply those tools and LET their body do its own repair work!  My focus is on that of “health” NOT on “disease”.  It sounds silly to me, to tell a client how they can live WITH their illness, I’d rather help them understand what changes they can make so their body can by all rights get strong enough to kick it to the curb.

Typically when someone ends up scheduling a consultation with me; they feel sick, discouraged, they have tried to use different pills, shots and/or surgeries to keep their “sickness” under control.  If I’ve done my job well, my clients learn to cooperate with and not work against nature, they get better and are better equipped in the future to help themselves.  For many this takes TIME, the one thing many walk in saying, I can’t feel like this I don’t have TIME, yet if you don’t MAKE the TIME to address the issues, laying in a bed staring at the ceiling could be the next stop the train makes! Again, health is simple yet few have it, it takes a willingness to change what obviously isn’t working.  If you keep doing what you’ve always done and are expecting a different result, I hear tell that’s the definition of “insanity.”

Hippocrates believed that a diseased body needed a period of rest, not only physical rest, but chemical rest, which he considered even more important.  That Chemical rest could only be achieved by withholding food, which gives the organs in the body their opportunity to take anything that has accumulated as waste and do an internal house cleaning.

I love looking up and reading about Doctors from way back when… My 2nd career choice is called being lost for hours in the library, (don’t laugh it really could be a career.)  So here are some old-time Doc’s I ran across while being LOST in the library… In England, Dr. Thomas Sydenham’s concept of disease was narrowed down into one sentence: “Disease, is nothing else but an attempt on the part of the body to rid itself of morbific matter.”  Morbific, I love it, no one talks like that any more, but that word alone sure gets your attention.  Dr. Sydenham lived in the 17th century,  then there was another, a Dutchman who followed in Sydenhams footsteps, Hermann Boerhaave who said: “Disease is cured with the help of nature by neutralization and excretion of morbific matter.”  There’s that word again, morbific… I think I  could call getting lost for days in a library a career I could do this research on-line, but I LOVE the smell of the books inside the library! Sorry, side-tracked, moving right along….

Just prior to Louis Pasteur’s day was a Cellular pathologist Rudolf Virchow who was a pioneer in his field back in the day, and he stated:  “If I could live my life over again, I would devote it to proving that germs seek their natural habitat – diseased tissues rather than being the cause of diseased tissue: e.g. mosquitoes seek the stagnant water, but don’t cause the pool to become stagnant.”  Maybe re-read this paragraph…

The way our digestive system and the mechanics of how it performs its duties is obviously inherited,  our eating HABITS are LEARNED habits.  If you turn your toddler loose outside, will they not attempt to eat rocks, sticks and dirt?  You as parents have to teach them that those are NOT foods.  So why are we not doing the same by teaching them that fast food, refined sugar in the form of baked deserts are NOT healthy foods?  Because we can’t just tell them we have to show them by what they SEE us eating!  We lead by example not just by the words we speak.  The big revelation folks is always that our ACTIONS carry more clout than our words!

Hippocrates – “The urgency of the body to regain its normal, healthy state.  This is called vis medicatrix naturae – the healing power of nature which cures from within!”

It wasn’t until Louis Pasteur’s theory that disease came from outside the body, which for most folks is way easier to accept, because we are victims vs. a contributor to the issue.  That the medical arena of that day shifted gears and began to rely more on drug therapy vs. lifestyle adaptation. It’s when people started to take the “why is this happening to me, or I didn’t ask for this” mentality. Yet, Dr. Bieler M.D. used to tell his patients, “Your pain, misery and illness result from your own dietary mistakes and drugs.  You are suffering because you are filled with toxic wastes caused by your diet of poorly selected food filled with artificial flavorings, preservatives, synthetics, over-processed ingredients, too much stimulating food, too few natural vitamins from vegetables and fruits.  If you selected wholesome natural foods, they were probably improperly prepared, boiled to death or overheated in oil, then covered with harmful condiments.  The normal chemistry of your digestion is upset not only by these toxic wastes but also by harmful drugs, unhealthy  living habits that include lack of exercise.  So, highly poisonous materials toxins which have stagnated in your blood, impair the filters and eliminative organs, chief of which are the kidneys, liver bowels and skin.” That was back in 1965, and you know what, his practice was of such that Hollywood folks sought him out with their health issues, even when he tried to close his practice and retire, he ended up seeing patients in his home, he was a popular Doctor back in the day.

Early in my own practice, I studied Dr. Bieler’s methods intensely because it made sense!  I made his first cornerstone towards building health the starting line.  I start all my client’s on a juice fast.  If my client’s stick to the routine properly some will actually experience that of a fever which the body uses to burn up waste so it can be eliminated.

We have 2 important organs that take out our trash.  The liver and the kidneys.  The liver eliminates typically through the bowels, and the kidneys dump through the bladder.  There are times when the liver is congested and the waste makes it way into the blood, we don’t want it there.  The kidney’s if they are inflamed, toxins are backed up in the blood too.  So toxic dirty blood must get rid of these toxins or the person dies, so nature uses substitute avenues of elimination when this happens.  The lungs are used as the backup removal system when the kidneys can’t keep up.  So when folks tell me they have horrible respiratory issues, we work on strengthening the kidneys.  They are elimination partners.  The elimination partner for the liver is the skin, which when the overflow is being sent to the skin it results in breakouts like acne, eczema, and boils.

So, when there is a waste back up taking place in the body, and other organs are being used as emergency avenues of elimination,  seeing disease as an unnatural elimination process in order to speed along elimination; a couple things need to take place for the person to start to feel better.

Folks, I am passionate about working with people, I love to teach, and empower others to take back control of their health and proper maintenance of their bodies.  I know this post was a long one, but those that needed to read it, will in fact read it to the end.  Even if that is only one person than that is the person I was prompted by God to write this for to offer them maybe an element of hope where they may feel hopeless in their quest for feeling healthier.

I tend to share about some of my client’s (keeping their identity hidden unless they agree for me to share their name) cases, with the hopes that it helps others in their quest for turning around a health situation they may be struggling with.

Three years ago I had a 55 year old woman who came to me on the verge of begging to die, even admitted she had contemplated suicide because of her extreme depressive state.  On her first consultation she complained of heart palpitation and a near non existent sleep pattern.  Her blood pressure was 170/100; her urine was extremely acidic (QFA Analysis where I process first morning urine and saliva).  Her knees, ankles and feet were super swollen, she had fevers that came and went for no apparent medical reason and her joints were so painful that she could barely get up and down small steps.  She complained about being stiff and had what felt like crippling pain in her hands, hips and  right shoulder area.  Her biggest fear was that she was destined for confinement in a wheelchair.

Upon taking her lifestyle history; her dietary habits consisted of about 10 cups of coffee daily(she was running on Dunkin) with zero water intake, the coffee is what propelled her thru her day since her sleep pattern was terrible.  She smoked cigarettes, ate primarily meat for all three meals, lived and craved starches, canned fruits and refined sugar foods and to cap it all off she rotated between aspirin and Tylenol all day long to compensate for the stiffness and pain. She has been rotated for years on different arthritis medications, sleeping pills and depression medications too. She was very much overweight as a consequence of her lifestyle.

She looked at me with tears in her eyes and said,” I’m willing to give you 6 months of my life to see if you can help me get well.”  My response to her was ” It will probably take much longer than that,”  I believe in being honest with my clients.  I went on to tell her that “your joints didn’t get stiff in a day; the toxic saturation of your body has been years in the making, like burying a toxic metal drum in the soil, after years of erosion occurs and the contents start to leak out, then the ground water starts to become contaminated, the EPA cannot just drive in with a backhoe and take out the area with the leaky drum and consider the area “clean”.  Also, you have been covering up your symptoms with drugs, and coupled with a horrible daily diet, all these combined has been a cocktail for health decline.”

I convinced her to give up all the drugs, (since they were not fixing her symptoms), smoking, coffee and meat for her particular issues, although I do permit some clients to eat meat and drink weak herbal tea or coffee.  I recommended some calcium/magnesium capsules as her only nutritional supplementation and the following foods:  upon rising, one tsp of yeast dissolved in some warm water. Then for breakfast; a vegetable soup made with only green beans and zucchini.  Mid-morning; four ounces of raw cucumber juice. Then for lunch; steamed celery, more vegetable soup, one slice of whole grain bread and a blended salad with zero dressing.  Mid-afternoon; fruit or fruit juice diluted with water. Dinner;  one package of frozen or 10 oz. of fresh cut green beans, lightly steamed including the liquid from the pan and a head of romaine lettuce.  Before going to bed, another teaspoon of yeast dissolved in warm water.

Three years later, I’m happy to report that her weight-loss was just under 100 lbs; her blood pressure was 120/92; her depression had left completely; she was now sleeping well for the first time since she can’t remember when.  She was able to exercise and she was elated that she was free of arthritic pain.  She no longer struggled with edema in her feet or hands.  She said, ” I feel happier than I ever have and I never get tired of my diet, although it was super hard in the beginning to get used to and sometimes, for short periods, I went off of the diet because my craving for sweets and meats won the battle.  But strangely they didn’t seem to offer me the same satisfaction as I remembered in the past.  I realized I could feel the same symptoms returning when I cheated, and my quest to not end up in a wheel chair is what kept pushing me on.  The vision of my grandchildren visiting me in a wheel chair was just unacceptable.”

She went on to say: “my whole body feels better, I actually look forward to getting up in the morning, I have the physical energy to actually play with my grandchildren, and physically, I haven’t had this much energy without coffee since my early 20’s, even the tone of my skin is better and everyone tells me how much better I look.”

Even better was as she continued to go see her family physician, he kept insisting that the nutritional changes she was making had nothing to do with her physical improvements?  Yet since she was no longer taking any of her medications, what other explanation could there be? She eventually decided to look for a different family physician.

Dr. Frederick Hoffman who for many years was the chief statistician of the Prudential Life Insurance Company, who authored a dictionary-sized book on cancer and diet concluded: “I am fully convinced that profound dietary influences in cancer are to be looked upon as a causative factor.” Still, it is heresy to mention diet and cancer in the same sentence or diet and any disease which the medical profession believes can only be “cured” through a pill or an injection.

We are so concerned with synthesizing chemicals which will cure; that we have lost sight of the fact that these same chemicals have been lodged in our foods for thousands of years. “Let thy food be thy medicine, and thy medicine be thy food.”

Folks through the years I have been able to observe the close relationship of someone’s diet and lifestyle and the connection of dis-ease in their health.

I remember the very first client that sought out my services who had a tumor. At that point in my practice my focus had been mainly on digestive support, candida over growth, weight-loss, and leaky-gut issues.  So truth be told I knew practically nothing about the relationship between tumors/cancer and diet & lifestyle connections.

This client had a tumor that could NOT be operated on because of certain nerves and blood vessels that were connected that the tumor had grown into.  This gal was referred to me because she was told I used foods to help folks strengthen their bodies and wanted to know if I could help her?  The first thing I did was I sent her for a hair mineral test, and I did a QFA Analysis.  The mineral test showed that her Sulphur was super elevated, which typically most folks are Sulphur depleted.  But her levels were the highest I’ve ever seen.

Her and her husband raised farm animals to sell, and she had been eating a lot of turkey before she was diagnosed with the tumor.  I was honest with her that I was not 100% certain what was going to be the best course of action, as I had never worked with a client whose Sulphur levels were off the chart like hers were.  I did decide that it made sense to remove anything that would be contributing to the Sulphur from her dietary plan.  I recommended foods that would increase her alkalinity by using certain veggies and fruits and fresh juices and blended raw salads.  It took about 8 months of sticking to a super rigid dietary plan, but her tumor was beginning to shrink.  18 months later it was all but completely gone. ( she did continue working with her physicians as she was changing her dietary lifestyle, I was NOT dealing with her tumor, I was dealing with her nutritional balance.)

Now the way my mind works, made me beyond curious that there had to be some major connections between diet and the healing capacity of our own bodies.  Here was an inoperable tumor that was consuming this gals blood vessels and nerves, and with severe dietary and lifestyle changes; a tad past 2 years and her doctors couldn’t find any signs of the tumor.  Realizing each one of us is unique by design, she had incorporated some meats back into her diet; beef, lamb, some fresh water fish, but I recommended she keep severely limited amounts of Sulphur rich foods in her diet.

I’d like to point out that not all my clients stick to what I recommend like their lives depend on it.  Yet in many cases it really does, if what you have been doing for years isn’t making you feel like the poster child for glowing health, then it should be obvious what your doing isn’t working well for you.

Some complain that their lives are just too busy to fit these dietary changes into “living on the run” and they just can’t stick with it.  When you realize that most folks go to their doctor not really for preservation of life, but for freedom from pain and as much disability as possible, most only focus on preservation when they are told they have an illness that is going to kill them.

Yet when the client/patient chooses not to co-operate, the recommendations given have zero power to function.  The other part that causes some clients to stop the nutritional battle plan that I end up recommending for their particular needs; is the housecleaning that their body starts through as the body is getting what it needs to start repairing and rejuvenating. The body has to get rid of what has been making it feel less than it’s best. Sometimes that process doesn’t feel the greatest either, so most will give up, and that is a shame.

Folks, the one thing NO practitioner can give you as a person is a MISSION in your own life, each one of us usually has something important that we hope to accomplish to the best of our ability.  For some it’s to make mountains of money, for others to acquire happiness although my life has taught me that happiness is declared on what is currently happening in our lives at any given moment which means our definition of happiness is governed to change based on our outward circumstances.  Yet JOY, is something that we choose to house within ourselves that cannot be affected by outward circumstances!  Whatever, your mission in life is or was way back when,  the truth is; being in a great state of health physically should be the starting point.  Your WEALTH is in your health…. if your sick nothing else matters, it’s all you can think about, it’s all you can focus on…because its the wheel that is squeaking the loudest!

Change your starting point and put your health at the top of your priorities and change your trajectory in life… IF you’d like some help doing just that, guess what… that is what I do… I offer you the help and your own body has the built in programming to do the rest! Your body has a built in “do it yourself” repair shop, but as any good repair shop owner will attest too, you have to have the proper tools to do the job!

I offer phone consults as well as in office appointments.  I’d be honored to work with you.

Natural Therapy for Cancer

Fruits and Vegetables

Anyone who has ever had cancer, or had a loved one with cancer, knows the feelings of fear, anxiety, worry and often hopelessness that this very serious illness can bring.  These emotions are very understandable it’s a serious illness.  So, its little wonder that cancer usually causes intense emotional distress in everyone involved.

Of course, the subject of cancer is far too involved to adequately address in a mere blog post.  However, I can acquaint you with some important information about cancer from a natural healing perspective and give you some ideas about options you may not be familiar with.  However, I strongly encourage you to seek professional help when dealing with cancer.  You need competent health care professionals helping you with your program and monitoring your progress, but you should also do some study on your own and learn about things you can do for yourself.

WHAT EXACTLY IS CANCER?

Cancer is a disease involving cells that have undergone a genetic mutation so they are no longer responsive to messages from the body that regulate cell metabolism and growth.  These mutations are believed to be the result of free radical damage turn cancerous.  Normal cells have an aerobic metabolism, which means they produce energy by means of oxygen and oxidation.  Anaerobic cells produce energy without oxygen via a process of fermentation.

This is important to know because if the body is highly oxygenated, the environment for cancer does not exist.  In fact, in 1931 Dr. Otto Warburg won a Nobel Prize for proving that whenever any cell is denied 60% of its oxygen requirements, it can become cancerous.  So, conditions that deprive cells of oxygen (like chronic inflammation, buildup of toxins or problems with red blood cells or circulation) increase the risk of cancer.  An overly acidic environment in the body is also a breeding ground for cancer.

Another important thing you should know is that cancer cells are forming in the body on a regular basis.  Very likely, you have a few inside you right now.  Don’t worry, the immune system normally recognizes these deviant cells and destroys them.

muscles

Therefor two factors must exist for you to develop cancer.  First, your body has to have a toxic, low oxygen environment that encourages the development of anaerobic cancer cells, and second, your immune system must be weakened so that it is not able to recognize and destroy these cells.

aerobic-respiration

So, while killing cancer cells (the goal of conventional cancer therapy) is an important part of treating cancer, it does not fix the underlying problems that created the cancer in the first place.  This is the weakness of the standard medical approach to cancer.  An effective protocol for cancer should do more than just destroy cancer cells, it should try to restore a normal, healthy environment in the body and rebuild the immune system.

So, even if one choose to use orthodox cancer therapies to destroy the cancer cells, they would be wise to consider doing natural therapy to restore the body’s state of health and prevent the cancer from wanting to re-occur.

PRINCIPLE #1: INCREASE OXYGEN LEVELS

Cancer cells are anaerobic, which means they live and thrive in a low oxygen environment.  They are able to get their energy by metabolizing nutrients, notable sugars and carbohydrates without oxygen, in a fermentative process.  Cancer cells cannot survive in a high oxygen environment, so keeping the body well oxygenated inhibits cancer.  Do this by getting plenty of fresh air and exercise, breathe deeply, if you smoke, QUIT.

oxygen

There are several supplements that can enhance oxygenation in the body.  For starters, CHINESE LUNG SUPPORT:  helps with oxygen delivery and uptake and is very useful for anyone with respiratory weakness.  Another Chinese remedy that strengthens the lungs and enhances oxygen transport is CORDYCEPS.  Cordyceps also helps the immune system.

LIQUID CHLOROPHYLL: is another great way to enhance oxygen transport.  It prevents clumping of red blood cells and helps them carry more oxygen to the tissues.  Research has shown that it can reduce the risk of cancer.

PRINCIPLE #2: BALANCE pH

In order to have optimal health, the body must maintain a proper internal pH.  Cancer cells prefer an acid pH environment.  Their fermentative metabolism also releases large amounts of lactic acid that inhibit transportation o oxygen to neighboring cells.  This spreads the environment for cancer.  A buildup of acid waste also inhibits toxins from being released by the cells.

ph-foods

The best way to counteract this acidic environment is to eat large quantities of fresh, preferable organic, fruits and veggies every day.  This is well-recognized as one of the best ways of decreasing your risk of cancer, but unfortunately, its benefit in helping folks recover from cancer is often ignored.  Fresh fruits and veggies not only help alkalize the body, they also strengthen immunity, aid detoxification and provide much-needed antioxidants.

Besides eating fresh fruits and veggies, there are several other supplements that can help alkalize the body.  The first is Ultimate Green Zone:  this is a whole food supplement that alkalizes the environment, aids in detoxification and builds the immune system to help it recognize and destroy cancer cells.

Digestive enzymes are a MUST to help balance pH.  my favorite choice for folks with cancer is Proactazyme plus and PDA Combo, these are great choices with balancing pH and assisting with proper digestion.  You can’t nourish a sick body if the food processor, a.k.a. digestive system can’t process the nutrients.  A lack of hydrochloric acid leads to excess lactic acid in the body, which sets the stage for cancer to thrive.  These are taken with meals to help the body metabolize food properly so as to avoid a buildup of acid waste and toxins.  They are also taken between meals to help rid the body of excess proteins that may be causing acid in the blood.

PRINCIPLE #3: STRENGTHEN THE IMMUNE SYSTEM

The body normally and regularly produces cancer cells due to free radical damage, environmental factors or other causes.  A healthy immune system recognizes and destroys these defective cells.  When the immune system is unable to recognize these deviant cells or is too weak to destroy them, the disease we call cancer takes root.

immune-system

There are many reasons why the immune system becomes weakened; poor nutritional intake is a major factor for many.  The loss or destruction of friendly bacteria in the intestinal tract is another.  Excessive sugar consumption supplies cancer cells with the energy they need to proliferate fast, (refined sugar is like fertilizer for cancer cells,) while contributing to chronic inflammation that distresses the immune system.

Improving nutritional intake, especially eating those 7-9 servings of fruits and veggies daily, will help the immune system, as will eliminating chemically laden processed foods.  Reducing intake of sugar, white flour and other simple carbohydrates will also prove helpful.

TRIGGER IMMUNE: helps to rebuild a weakened immune system, enhance vital energy and immune function and increase white blood cell production and platelet count.  It is very helpful in recovering from chemotherapy and can also be taken during chemotherapy to strengthen the system to resist toxic affects from chemotherapy.

IMMUNE STIMULATOR:  is another supplement that can boost the immune system to fight cancer.  It not only enhances natural killer cells (lymphocytes), which kill cancer cells, it also increases T-cell production and antibody production.  An important benefit of Immune simulator is its ability to enhance cellular communication, which helps the immune system identify and target calls it needs to destroy.

UNA DE GATO COMBINATION: is another herbal formula that strengthens a weakened immune system.  The principle ingredient, Una de Gato, has been used in South American for cancer treatment and contains compounds that inhibit tumor growth in animals.

PRINCIPLE #4: DETOXIFY

The human body is bombarded with toxins, heavy metals, chlorine and thousands of chemicals that we breathe in, consume in our diet or absorb through our skin.  These all cause free radicals in the body and contribute to the environment of cancer.

chemical

Avoiding these toxins is part of both cancer prevention and holistic cancer therapy.  In particular, avoid or eliminate refined and processed foods (especially foods raised with pesticides, antibiotics or steroids), toxic cleaning products (such as laundry detergents, skin care items, fluoride toothpaste, etc.) and chlorinated and fluoridated water. Research the ingredients that are in cleaning and health/beauty products before you purchase, we all carry mini computers today called “smart phones” which can give you information lickety split.  Also, avoid microwaved or irradiated food and protect yourself from electrical equipment (electromagnetic pollution may be a major causal factor in cancer).

It is also helpful to assist the body in detoxifying from these substances using any of the following supplements:

For starters: E-TEA or also referred to as Essiac Tea is a famous anticancer formula that helps the body eliminate toxins.  It improves lymphatic drainage and stimulates the immune system.

ALL CELL DETOX:  is another good, general cleansing formula that is based on a Native American medicine man’s cancer remedy.  It reduces inflammation, supports the liver and digestive system and helps neutralize acid.

BLOOD BUILD:  is a supplement I think everyone should use cancer or not at least 3 times a year.  it nourishes the blood and helps increase its volume.  It is an excellent formula for helping the body rebuild after chemotherapy.

PRINCIPLE #5: USE ANTIOXIDANTS

Our need for oxygen exceed the demand for any nutrient, even water, because we need oxygen for normal energy production in the cell.  You can go 3 weeks with zero food, and 3 days even without water, but you cannot go 3 minutes without oxygen.  Oxygen can also produce free radicals that can damage normal cells and cause cancer. Antioxidant nutrients protect the body from this free radical damage, thereby reducing cancer risk.  Antioxidants can also be used in a treatment program for cancer, because they help protect the body from harmful side effects of radiation and chemotherapy.

Some antioxidants to consider would include:  HIGH POTENCY GRAPINE:  which is an extract of grape seed that helps reduce inflammation and prevent cell damage, and GREEN TEA EXTRACT: which contains polyphenols called catechins, powerful antioxidants that protect cells from cancer and kill cancer cells.  One of these catechins is epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which was shown in several studies to kill cancer cells without harming healthy tissue.

One of my all time favorites is THAI-GO: its a liquid which many cancer patients will assimilate liquids easier, but this contains xanthones, a powerful antioxidant that has been shown in numerous studies to inhibit cancer cells and aid in tumor reduction.  These compounds cause apoptosis (or preprogrammed cell death) in cancer cells.  Xanthones exert cytotoxic (cancer cell killing) effects against human hepatocellular carcinoma cells, and have been shown to inhibit the growth of human leukemia HL-60 cells.  Xanthones have also been shown to be effective against human breast cancer SKBR3 cells.

IF-RELIEF: also contains xanthones and can be helpful for reducing chronic inflammation and pain.

PRINCIPLE #6: KILL CANCER CELLS

For those diagnosed with cancer, it is important to kill off the cancerous cells.  The problem is that chemotherapy and radiation also cause damage to healthy cells.  Killing cancer cells also produces toxins that the body MUST eliminate.

There are some natural compounds that can help kill cancer cells, too.  PAW PAW CELL REG: is a standardized extract of acetogenins from the American Paw paw tree.  These compounds have been shown in scientific research to cause apoptosis (preprogrammed cell death) in cancer cells by inhibiting their energy production.

Paw Paw Cell Reg is not appropriate for all cancers and should be used as a part of a comprehensive cancer program.  However, even if one chooses to use chemotherapy drugs.  Paw Paw may still be beneficial.  It has also been shown to reduce chemotherapy drug resistance.  By itself, paw pas doesn’t have the side effects of hair loss, weight loss, extreme nausea and compromised immunity.  It may cause nausea in larger doses however.

Paw paw is NOT recommended as a supplement for preventing cancer.  It is only appropriate when a person HAS cancer.  Paw paw is also ineffective against leukemia, lymphoma and other cancers that do not involve tumors.

Another supplement that can help the body destroy cancer cells, is HIGH POTENCY PROTEASE,  it breaks down the protein coat on cancer cells and also helps prevent cancer cells that are breaking down from creating a toxic load on nearby healthy cells.  It is taken BETWEEN meals for this purpose, and taken WITH meals to enhance digestion.

PRINCIPLE #7: INCREASE JOY AND PLEASURES

One German study shows a commonality that all cancer patients experienced a trauma and an unresolved psychological issue shortly before the cancer developed.  Stress is a big component of cancer because psychological stress creates physical stress that dramatically reduces immune function.

laughter.jpg

Reducing stress should be a stress-less task.  That’s why the goal here is not to reduce stress , but rather to deliberately seek out joy and pleasure.  A pleasurable, happy experience has a more positive effect on the immune system and healing than the stressful effects of an experience.

So, seek out pleasurable experiences. Find things that make you laugh.  Spend time with family, friends or pets.  Take a walk in the fresh air and sunshine.  Surround yourself with pleasing colors, smells, sounds.  Listen to favorite music; get up and dance.  Listen to calming, meditative music.  Take a hot bath in Epsom salts and lavender oil.  Treat yourself to a  full body massage, take a mini vacation or go to a spa for the day.

You can also reduce stress by taking some herbal support like NUTRI-CALM: which replenishes  the nervous system and adrenals.  ADRENAL SUPPORT : will help build stamina and promote healing as well as giving the body more ability to cope with stress.  Another option is CHINESE STRESS RELIEF:  which can assist the body’s ability to relax, counteracting stress.

Cancer is a difficult multi-facet disease to work with, but many folks have successfully recovered from cancer using both natural and conventional therapies or a combination of the two.  Seek out professional assistance in designing the holistic program that is a proper fit for you.  Remember, there is hope!

Asparagus: who knew….

Food Tip Tuesday:
The wonders of Asparagus

:asparagus
*contains an alkaloid called Asparagine, the value of this alkaloid for our health
*natural diuretic particularly when combined with some carrots,
*supports kidney/urinary health
*helpful for diabetes and anemia when used in conjunction with other veggies..
Now. I’m talking about either eating raw, chopped in salads or “juiced”. when asparagus is cooked ( many cook it until it’s limp and nasty) you are losing the value of the alkaloid as the hydrogen and oxygen are dissipated and the natural salts formed by the combination of this alkaloid are virtually lost or their value destroyed.
By using as a juice in conjunction with carrots, it helps break up oxalic acid crystals in the kidneys and thru the muscular system. it is good for rheumatism, neuritis. Rheumatism results from the end product of digestion of meat and meat products with generate excessive amounts of urea (according to Dr. Norman Walker)
Continuous consumption of meat proteins can tax the workings of the kidneys and eliminative organs, straining them to the point where progressively smaller amounts of uric acid is eliminated and a greater amount is then absorbed by the muscles. The end result is painful and referred to as rheumatism.
This is also one of the underlying causes for prostate gland issues, in which case this juice combination, in addition to the carrot, beet and cucumber juice has been quite helpful.

Where did my journey begin?

eachjour

I’ve had multiple clients ask me over the years why did I choose to embark into the field of Naturopathic Medicine.  My answer has always been I didn’t choose it, IT chose ME.

I was recently asked the same question and I felt maybe it was time to put my journey into words.  I think that some folks naturally assume than when one is in this type of a field of practice that they don’t struggle with the same mental or physical issues that folks who seek my services out do, but I have to burst the bubble with that assumption…. WE too are humans on this spinning ball we call earth, and therefore are subjected to the same hurdles. There is zero doubt in my mind and heart that God chose my path for me, and my conditioning began for me right from the stages of infancy.

Back in 1965 , it was quite common for laboring mothers to be placed in what was referred to as a twilight sleep.  The drugs used to initiate this twilight sleep were comprised of a chemical cocktail of “Morphine & Scopolamine”.  The Morphine was to reduce the pain in labor, and the scopolamine was to create amnesia so the experience wasn’t remembered.  The problem is that this cocktail greatly suppressed the Central Nervous system of both mother and baby.  This meant the baby would need to be delivered with the assistance of forceps, (which I was), and  baby upon birth, to have a very suppressed Central Nervous System which could cause breathing issues and a host of other neurological malfunctions, mine began in the digestive tract.

The other common thing to offer the mother after birth was medication to dry up her milk, my mother was told by the medical staff that her emotional state was too nervous to breast feed me, and would make for a very nervous baby, so they recommended she resort to feeding me formula vs. breast milk.  Hence, my digestive issues began from the starting gate. The colostrum in breast milk works as the perfect stimulant to allow the baby to pass out the meconium, which is a black tar like coating inside the infants colon. I was constipated before I even left the hospital with my parents.  As an infant I was diagnosed as having colic, and infant constipation.  My parents rode the rollercoaster of trying to find which formula would work best for me. I was given colic prescriptions and prescription laxatives as an infant, adding insult to injury.

As a child I always remembered, (what should be a simple task) of having a bowel movement was one of great agony and a dreaded body function that I sought to avoid at all cost.  Was I the only child, that in order to use the bathroom had to sit on the throne rocking back and forth with a cold rag on her forehead, and the wastebasket between my legs (because most bowel movements meant throwing up), cold sweats and feeling like I was going to pass out, which some times actually happened?  I remember asking my mom, what is wrong with my “poop shoot”, twas, what I called it…..

When I reached the age of 8 yrs. old, I experienced my 1st migraine headache, albeit it took the medical field upwards of a year to realize that was what I was experiencing.  In the meantime, I was put thru E.E.G’s to see if the headaches were some form of a seizure, or possibly a brain tumor, once those were ruled out, they assumed I must need glasses, which they gave me yet I couldn’t SEE thru them. They mysteriously keep getting lost! Not sure what was up with that?

So after spending much time at Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago, it took a Pediatric Intern to confront my parents with the statement that he felt I was having migraine headaches.  So, they prescribed a medication… I do NOT remember what it was, but what I do remember was when I took it, it was like having a total out of body experience, and I was expected to still sit at my desk at school and be a kid at recess, when I couldn’t even manage to keep my feet underneath me when I was on it. Mom took me off of that when the school nurse gave me my dose, and next period was recess and I literally walked off a 3 + food concrete pad on the playground and had a goose egg on my forehead the size of a grapefruit coupled with a concussion.  Problem with it was, I couldn’t even “LIE” about having the headache when they would occur, because it was uncontrollable vomiting and the pain was so excruciating that all I could do was lay down and moan, crying made it worse so I learned really quickly not to add insult to injury.

At the age of 10, I experienced my 1st go round with a “blocked bowel”, I hadn’t had a bowel movement in at least 2 weeks and I became septic.  My fever shot up, and my body was trembling uncontrollably, coupled with a migraine. Folks, during these young ages I spent a LOT of time in the E.R. and doctors offices.  I also struggled with lots of upper respiratory issues, it got to when I felt the urge to cough or sneeze, I’d hurry up and leave the room so mom couldn’t hear, because instantly she would give my cold to “Contact, or Dristan”, (remember those commercials way back when?  I hated taking those because they made me feel jumpy inside, and I quickly learned after taking those, then I’d end up with a UTI, (Urinary tract infection) because it would dry EVERYTHING up!

So now being in the E.R. and mom being told I had a severely blocked bowel, the only course of action would be to remove my colon and have a colostomy bag. I remember my mom crying, but conceding, the doctor left the room to put the surgery team together.  God being supreme and in control, had placed an E.R. nurse in my room during the doctors conversation with my mom, (I was pumped up on feel good juice of some sort), but I do remember the nurse telling my mom, she could lose her job for what she was about to suggest and that they didn’t have much time, but she didn’t want to see this baby (meaning me), lose her colon, did she have my mom’s permission to try to save it before surgery.  My mom didn’t even ask “what” she wanted to do, she just agreed.  What she gave me was a high enema, I remember them trying to muffle my screams, and massaging my belly, and using tools to help the stool exit, and demanding that I PUSH with everything I had…. Yes I gave birth…. birth to the petrified stool, and gave birth to my 1st go round with hemorrhoids, what a way to welcome the age of being “10”…..I had another go round with a blocked bowel when I was 17 yrs. old.  But to this day, thanks be to God, this lady still possesses her proper set of pipes given to her at birth!

Now after the stool birthing process at the age of 10, I distinctly remember dreaming of an evening, and it was so prominent of a dream that I actually wrote it down in my little girlie diary at the time, which I had forgotten about, until my mother who for whatever reason saved the diary (not sure if she save it with intention or it just got shoved in a box of misc. stuff, but shortly before she died in 2005, she gave it to me, of which I didn’t end up reading until 2 yrs. after she passed).  But I DO remember that dream set a ball in motion for me that put me at odds with both my parents from that point forward.  My dream told me to pay attention to my foods!  God’s honest truth… the exact words in my diary ” a voice in my dream told me to pay attention to my foods, I don’t know why, maybe doing this will help me”. I don’t think I completely understood, but things began to make sense after that.  I began to realize that after I ate certain foods, I would get a migraine, that was the 1st place I began to connect the dots.

Remember those cookies that looked like windmills?  I’d get a horrible headache after eating those, or when dad would bring home Arby’s roast beef sandwiches for lunch, I’d be sicker than a dog after eating those.  Or doubled up on the floor after drinking a glass of milk.  My mom loved Chinese food, so we’d frequent a local Chinese restaurant, and Migraine from hell would occur after eating there.  Slim Jim’s same thing, Doritos, Funyuns,  White Castle hamburgers, my list kept getting bigger.  Of course back then I didn’t know that MSG. was the culprit, or being lactose intolerant.  I just knew after I’d eat certain foods, I didn’t “FEEL” good.  Now being raised by a father who insisted you eat whatever was placed in front of you, becoming defiant and refusing to eat certain things, well that boat didn’t float too terribly well.   Same with liver and onions, I couldn’t digest it not to mention couldn’t stand the taste… but there was a huge turning point for me in 6th grade when I remember standing up, (being the last Mohican at the dinner table), and Liver -n- onion was the main dish, coupled with left over Chinese and a big glass of milk.  I remember staring at that and thinking “you’ve got to be kidding me”…..

I stood my ground, and actually I was getting quite upset, my father was sitting at the table with me as mom was doing the dishes, and I got this lecture, Jodi Ann, I don’t care if that food tastes like it just came out of the freezer, you are going to eat it, there are people starving who would give their right arm to have what is sitting in front of you… Now being the bright 11 yr. old that I credited myself to be, I got up from the table and walked over to the “junk drawer in the kitchen, you know the one every household has”, and took out an envelope and remember walking back to the table, I placed what food I could in that envelope licked it shut and set it down in front of my father and made the statement, “Daddy, I am feeling like a giving person right now so you can mail this to them, and then they can save their right arm, cuz I’m NOT eating any of it.”  As any of you parents that may be reading this, that brave stand didn’t fare super well for this brilliant 11 yr. old Joan of Ark, as a matter of fact I remember being quite sore for a day or too.  However, I remember my parent’s arguing, and my dad saying if she isn’t going to eat what we eat, she need not be at the dinner table.  Inside, I was doing my happy dance…

So here is where I impose my years of WISDOM on all reading parents….. LISTEN TO YOUR CHILDREN…. when I get clients who bring their kiddo’s for a consult, and are disgusted because they say their kids are being picky eaters, they are quickly corrected by ME, children are not BORN to be picky eaters, but they cannot always convey in conversation that when they eat something, they don’t feel right…I will tell you this though, Kids are way more in tune with listening to their bodies than adults.  Let me also pose a question to all parents who take the stance that your children will eat what is placed in front of them… when you go to a restaurant, do you purposely order something off the menu because you know its GOOD for you, or do you order something that you actually LIKE?  You have an element of choice, why shouldn’t they? Now I’m not saying you cave in and allow them to have crap food in place of something healthy.  What I am saying is you need to sometimes allow them the freedom to choose in the different food categories.  So if they don’t like a particular veggie, give them other veggie choices, and same with other food groups.  Their taste will change and improve as they grow older.

As I stop and sift through looking back over the years, I lost a lot of play time, laying in a bed with a bucket and rag on my head.  I missed out on spending the night at friends houses, (until my later teens), because I never knew when I was gonna have to use the bathroom, and it always meant I’d have to lay down for awhile afterwards. Not to mention I had no control over what foods would be served at friends houses, and didn’t want to bring on a headache.  It was easier to just forego and stay home.

When I got married and became pregnant with my 1st child, I ended up with toxemia, and gestational Diabetes, after I gave birth to her via C-section.  I made a solemn vow, the buck stops HERE.  There has to be a better way forward, and there was no way my children were going to experience any of what I went thru.  I began to scour thru the library and began reading everything and anything I could get my hands on that pertained to nutrition, I began to collect “OLD” cookbooks (pre-circa processed foods).  Everything I could was made from scratch and if I couldn’t make it from scratch, we didn’t eat it.  Well, I should say that didn’t roll super well with the hubs, so some concessions were made and his favorite junk foods were hidden, or he ate them at work. (we called it compromise). Not that our children never experienced any processed/junk foods, yes they did, however the moderation they received or were allowed to eat was greatly controlled especially when they were smaller.

One of the 1st life changing material that I came across was the book written by Dr. Henry Bieler, M.D. called Food is your Best Medicine, and the other was by Dr.Norman Walker’s book called Colon Health, those two books changed my direction in profound ways.  So to end where I began with this post, I didn’t pick my field of practice, IT picked me!  God had a direction, he had a plan for my future, I had to walk in the trenches for awhile, it developed within me a particular “bed-side manner”, and truth be told as with Paul and his “thorn in the flesh”, I have to still watch because I still succumb to migraines, and bowel malfunction when I drift off course.  So I do not place myself on any particular pedestal of perfection.  I believe I probably struggle less than most, but I do have my moments of weakness, like every other breathing mammal on the planet. Of which I usually pay dearly for when I cave into temptation.

Is there a better way to live?  ABSOLUTELY… and it begins with realizing “Food is your best medicine”,,,, and restoring intestinal integrity, that many are lacking including our children.

Healthfully yours,

Jodi Barnett N.D.
