Natures Sunshine, Why I Recommend This Line In My Practice!

As a Practitioner, I am beyond picky when it comes to the products that I recommend to my clients. There needs to be a high level of purity, quality and what is claimed to be in the product NEEDS to be in there at full strength. So one of the product lines I choose and personally use for my family as well is the Nature’s Sunshine line. They have been in business for 45 years, this is a tough industry and there are a whole mess of different supplement/herbal companies out there, things you want to watch for on the labels is things hidden under “natural flavors” because a whole host of non labeled ingredients are hidden there. Artificial colors & dyes, bad guy sugars like sucralose.  You want to choose a supplement/herbal company that offers FULL disclosure on their labels.

5-HTP😦click here for product link)
5HTP
Benefits:
May help regulate appetite, mood and sleep.
Helps the body adapt to stress.
Supports the nervous system.
Provides 35 mg of 5-HTP Power per capsule.
Provides 3 mg vitamin B6 per capsule.
How It Works:

5-Hydroxytryptophan is a precursor to serotonin, an important neurotransmitter that helps regulate appetite, mood and sleep. 5-Hydroxytryptophan is converted into serotonin in the body, which may help elevate mood, assist in controlling hunger and promote restful sleep. 5-HTP Power blends three adaptogenic herbs—eleuthero, ashwaganda and suma—with 5-HTP to help the body adjust to changes. It also contains vitamin B6 and zinc, which support the action of 5-HTP.

Ingredients:
3 mg vitamin B6 (150% of Daily Value), 3 mg zinc (20% of Daily Value), 5-HTP, eleuthero root, ashwagandha root and suma bark.
USAGE:

Hydroxytryptophan is a precursor to serotonin, which is a neurotransmitter that helps regulate our appetite, mood and our sleep. This can be used for helping with depression that involves low serotonin levels. If someone is taking an SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor), 5-HTP can be useful in helping with the side-effects of discontinuing it as 5-HTP will have a similar effect. NEVER discontinue any SSRI medication all at once & always adjust your dosing while being monitored by your prescribing physician.

Folks that have an O blood type find this works well at raising their dopamine levels, which are usually low when O blood types feel depressed. Understand that for some people who find they crave carbs, low serotonin levels can be the contributing factor, and 5-HTP can help reduce those cravings, it assists with sleep issues too, as 5-HTP is converted to serotonin and when its dark, the pineal gland converts the serotonin into melatonin which is a hormone the body naturally produces to induce feeling sleepy.

5-W: (click here for product link)
5-W

Benefits:
Supports the female glandular and reproductive systems.
May help tone and strengthen the uterus.
Is recommended for the last five weeks of pregnancy.
How It Works:
This formula contains natural minerals found in plants, which support vitality and healthy tissue growth. Herbs in this formula help support the female reproductive system by helping to tone the uterus and supporting circulation.
Ingredients:
Black cohosh root, squawvine whole plant, dong quai root, butcher’s broom root and red raspberry leaves

Usage:
This formula should only be used during the last 5 weeks of pregnancy to help induce labor and make childbirth easier. It promotes uterine contractions, tones the uterus and helps improve circulation.

HORMONAL INDUCED HEADACHES:

For gals who struggle with headaches connected with their cycles this formula has proven helpful as well as those vasoconstrictive headaches are typically hormonally induced.
If your headaches are migraine headaches this is not the formula for you, as black cohosh can exacerbate vasodilative migraine headaches. So working with a Doctor of Naturopathy, or Midwife who understands herbs is recommended!

7-KETO: (click here for product link)
7-Keto

Benefits:
Stimulates thyroid production.
Supports weight management goals.
Supports the immune system.
How It Works:

7-Keto is a safe, natural metabolite of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). Supplementing with 7-Keto may increase the production of T3, a thyroid hormone. The thyroid hormones play a role in determining the body’s basal metabolic rate. 7-Keto also supports the body’s immune system efforts by enhancing the function of white blood cells. It can also help the body’s efforts to maintain overall health. It is important to note that, unlike other metabolites of DHEA, 7-Keto is not converted to sex hormones (either androgens or estrogens).

Ingredients:

7-Keto and chickweed leaf extract.
7-Keto is a trademark of Humanetics Corp., Patent no. 5,296,481.

WEIGHT-LOSS:
This supplement stimulates the conversion of T4, which is the inactive form of our thyroid hormone, to T3 which is the active form. So this increases the metabolic rate and causes the body to burn fat at an accelerated rate. Clinical trials also showed this supplement to enhance the immune system, increase energy, and even enhance ones memory. Another benefit is 7-Keto does NOT convert into the sex steroids, of testosterone and estrogen, as does DHEA, so it may provide some of the same benefits as DHEA, but without the hormonal side effects.

This is my go to choice for my ladies who may be rolling into menopause and have begun to pick up some extra pounds as a result, using DHEA if they are already experiencing “hot-flashes”, 7-Keto won’t encourage those, where some gals trying to use DHEA  find that it can encourage “hot-flashes.”

ADAPTAMAX: (click here for product link)

adaptamax

Benefits:
Supports the immune system.
Provides energy to overcome stress.

Adaptogens help the body buffer the effects of stress and adapt to stressful situations. AdaptaMax’s adaptogenic strength comes from rhodiola, eleuthero, Korean ginseng, ashwaganda, rosemary, gynostemma and schizandra. Together these herbs help the body cope with a variety of stressful conditions, including stress on the immune system, fatigue and aging. They fight oxidative cellular damage, energize the body, support positive mood and stimulate the immune system. Other ingredients in this formula include nutrient-rich, immune-supporting herbs like astragalus, reishi mushroom, suma and ginkgo—to fortify the immune system and help protect the body from the consequences of stress. Alfalfa, kelp, chromium and a fruit and vegetable base provide nutrients to nourish the body’s cells. All told, AdaptaMax is a complete, energizing formula.

(this is a patented formula registered to NSP, so you won’t find this formulation anywhere else)

ADRENAL EXHAUSTION/STRESS:

When you see an herbal product that states it’s an adaptagenic, that means it helps the body deal better with stress. It helps with fatigue, immune weakness, & symptoms of aging brought on by excessive stress. This formula works best with A blood types. Blood type O does better with Suma as their adaptagenic formula. This blend also has antioxidant properties.

  • Conditions you may want to use this to support:
  • Adrenal exhaustion, weakness or burnout,
  • Anxiety (panic attacks),
  • Fatigue, Stress (foggy thinking)

ADRENAL SUPPORT: (Click here for product link)

adrenal support

Benefits:
Helps support adrenal function
Supports body’s ability to regulate occasional stress
Supports the glandular and nervous systems
Formulated with a unique adrenal glandular substance plus a synergistic blend of vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and adaptagens

How It Works:

Certain hormones in the body—called stress hormones—prepare the body to deal with stressful situations by increasing the heart rate and the force of contraction and blood flow to the heart, liver, and to skeletal and adipose tissue. These stress hormones are produced and regulated by the adrenal glands. They also dilate airways to the lungs and increase blood levels of glucose and fatty acids. The adrenal hormones and their functions are linked to virtually all of the body systems. Thus, many physiological processes and bodily functions, including cardiovascular health, sex drive, pH balance, skin conditions, energy levels, mood and overall psychological outlook often correlate to adrenal gland function. Adrenal Support is a synergistic blend of vitamins, minerals, enzymes and adaptogenic herbs specially formulated to nourish and strengthen the adrenal glands and to promote glandular secretion.

Ingredients:

25 mg vitamin C (42% Daily Value), 10 mg thiamin (667% DV), 5 mg riboflavin (294% DV), 5 mg vitamin B6 (250% DV), 45 mg pantothenic acid (450% DV), 10 mg magnesium (3% DV), 5 mg zinc (33% DV), 5 mg potassium, bovine adrenal substance, schisandra fruit, borage seed oil, licorice root and protease blend.

USAGE:
I use this product because it works wonderful for treating adrenal weakness. It helps strengthen the adrenals and increases energy and stamina. It helps to maintain blood sugar levels and blood pressure fluations due to stress.

When someone is struggling with adrenal weakness they usually are dealing with the symptoms of:

  • hypoglycemia
  • fatigue
  • cravings for sweets & alcohol
  • depression
  • poor digestion
  • poor bowel movements

I typically only have clients use this product in 3 month increments to rebuild severely depleted adrenals.  Afterwards, I switch them to Nervous Fatigue Formula, Suma Combination or Energ-V.

ALFALFA: (click here for product link)

alfalfa

Benefits:
Provides nutrients and trace minerals.
How It Works:
Alfalfa has been cultivated for over 2,000 years as a nutritive food for people and livestock. The Spanish used it for a variety of health issues. Modern herbalists consider it very nutritive and use it to help build the blood. Alfalfa’s roots grow deep, providing the plant with a rich source of nutrients not always found at the ground’s surface.
Ingredients:
Alfalfa aerial parts.

This is one of my favorite go to herbs, this baby right here is the “KING OF HERBS” and has been around and in use since way back when.  Alfalfa is a super rich source of vitamins, minerals, amino acid and other nutrients especially trace minerals.

The roots grow anywhere from 30-60 feet deep so the plant picks up minerals and water other plants can’t reach.

Because it is rich in trace minerals and amino acids it is a valuable supplement for the pituitary gland and this gland is adversely affected when its running low on trace minerals and amino acids.

  • It is a mild blood cleaner
  • helpful for arthritis as it’s a natural blood thinner
  • it stimulates poor appetite
  • morning sickness
  • rich breast milk
  • natural blood thinner (with out side-effects)

when you mix this in a tea with some red raspberry leaf it’s great for gals with morning sickness.  I have my pregnant mom’s taking this in conjunction with liquid chlorophyll throughout their pregnancy and have them discontinue the last month of pregnancy due to the fact that it does thin the blood.  But taking after pregnancy also brings in rich mothers milk.

ALGIN: (click here for product link)

algin

 Benefits:
Supports the intestinal system.
May absorb heavy metal ions.
Encourages normal elimination
How It Works:
Sodium alginate, an important part of the kelp plant, is mucilaginous and gels in water. Many people use it as a nutritional supplement supportive of the intestinal system. Its bulking action encourages normal eliminative function.
Ingredients:
Sodium alginate.

This is another one of my favorites because it falls in the category of “mucilage”, which means it absorbs toxins in our digestive tract. Like Heavy Metals. I always recommend it be used in conjunction with Heavy Metal Detox. (click here for product linkheavy metal detox

Conditions I use this for:

  • high cholesterol
  • heavy metal issues
  • radiation sickness
  • help to detox from vaccines

One thing to keep in mind is that mucilaginous herbs like align absorbs nutrients too.  So make sure there is a window between taking the align and your vitamins/minerals by about 1 hour.  Drink LOTS of water as this is a fiber and without enough liquid intake it may cause binding with the colon.

ADD & ADHD Learning Support…

learning

“I can’t stop squirming.”   “I can’t pay attention.”  “Why don’t people like me?” “Why is my teacher always upset with me?” “I just want to be normal, mommy.”

As parents and children drown in what feels like anguish, the only answer seems to be powerful drugs that calm and quiet, too often with unpleasant side-effects.  So it begs the question is there anything else we can do for our children with behavior and learning struggles?

There is more and more research coming to light showing a common thread between learning, behavior, concentration and “ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS.”

Kiddo’s diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and dyslexia often have lower levels of key essential fatty acids when compared to their more fortunate counterparts.  Adding these “good” fats into the diet of these children can make a real difference they can feel.  Even adults with learning issues can benefit.

Essential Fatty acids coupled with antioxidants for optimal brain and visual performance seem to be a key team player here.  We call these “fatty acids” Essential because they must be provided in the diet as the body cannot consistently make them.  Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) is a derivative of essential Omega-3 fatty acids.  Less well known but also important are the omega-6 fatty acid derivatives, like gamma linolenic acid (GLA) and arachidonic acid (AA).  When they are added to the diet of some hyperactive kiddo’s they seem to calm right down.  It’s an amazing transformation!

Dr. Jacqueline Stordy, a noted researcher has had much success with a combo of fish oil and evening primrose oil.  She notes that children who take sources of both essential fatty acids become calmer and their reading skills improved.

Researchers at Purdue University have also shown that children who are hyperactive, impulsive and inattentive, may have low levels of essential fatty acids, especially DHA.  Their experiment involved 53 boys who suffered from ADHD compared to 43 matched controls.  Analyses showed that the boys with ADKD had significantly lower levels of essential fatty acids in their blood.  They concluded that, although more research was needed, supplementation with missing fatty acids could be a very useful treatment for hyperactivity. Many of these children in the experiment also were displaying other symptoms that go along with essential fatty acid deficiency, like

*dry hair

*dry skin

*excessive thirst

*frequent urination

*asthma

*more prone to ear infections

SO WHY ARE SOME CHILDREN DEFICIENT IN DHA?

Some children get enough of the shorter chain omega-e and omega-6 fatty acids, but they have difficulty converting them into the needed longer chain fatty acids like DHA and AA.  Factors that inhibit the conversion of essential fatty acids to their healthful metabolites are trans fatty acids in the diet (these are fats produced when hydrogen atoms are added to unsaturated fats for improved shelf-life; this process destroys the nutritional value and even makes them harmful over long tern usage), viral infections, even stress can inhibit the proper conversion.

DHA is mega important!!!!

DHA’s importance starts in the womb.  It is a major player in the brain development of the growing fetus and a primary fatty acid in breast milk.  In fact, DHA comprises as much as 60% of the fatty acids in the retina of the eye.  Another notch in the benefits of doing all you can to breast feed your babies.  A study in the January 1998 issue of Pediatrics showed that breast-fed infants may have higher intelligence and greater academic achievement that formula-fed infants.  This was an 18 year study comparing the IQ measurements and rates of high school completion in 1000 children.  After all factors were taken into account, breast-fed babies were 38% more likely to graduate from high school.  DHA may be that missing link.

Now to new moms and expecting moms, to make sure that your breastmilk is rich in DHA, exp0ectant moms and nursing moms should place high importance on supplementing with a good source of essential fatty acids.

Dr. Stordy was particularly interested in dyslexia because in her own family many were dyslexic.  She noticed among her family that those who were breast fed the longest were the least affected by dyslexia.  “My research on young adults with and without dyslexia showed that dyslexics have poor dark adaptation, which is a function of the DHA-rich rod cells of the retina.  However, supplementation with a high DHA fish oil restored dark adaptation to normal.  Synapse membranes the junctions between nerve cells contain high concentrations of DHA and AA, and these fatty acids are important for efficient conduction of messages from one nerve cell to another.”

DHA – AGGRESSION IN YOUTH

There were some researchers who wanted to determine if DHA would have any affect on aggression in young adults. At the start of summer vacation 41 students were given either DHA rich oil capsules or placebo.  These students tool psychological tests at the beginning and end of the study.  The study began during summer vacation and ended during final exams, a very stressful time.  In the control group aggression against others was “significantly increased at the end of the study as compared with that measured at thee start, whereas it was not significantly changed in the DHA group… thus, DHA intake prevented extraggresion (aggression against others) from increasing at times of mental stress.”  We are seeing more and more aggressive behavior in our youth, and diet has a huge impact, as does what appears to be an overwhelming amount of stress that our youth are dealing with.  Many of these young adults are juggling schedules that most adults wouldn’t be able to keep up with.

PROTECTING THE FRAGILE ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS FROM OXIDATION

This is important as these essential fatty acids once they become oxidized fail to present the proper benefits.  So you want to have some superior antioxidant protection too.

So to improve the learning factors for your children and even yourself, by providing the missing nutritional link can possibly be a beneficial addition for both helping parents and children.

Some of the products as a Practitioner that I recommend:

Super ORAC Antioxidants:

Benefits:
Provides key nutrients to neutralize free radicals while combating the effects of cellular oxidation
Powerful antioxidant profile
How It Works:
Antioxidants are the body’s natural defense against free radicals. They scavenge them, “mopping up” free radicals before they have a chance to harm cells. Super ORAC combines eight powerful ingredients known to quench free radicals. Green tea contains polyphenols, which are potent antioxidants. EGCG is considered the most active polyphenol. It appears to help protect brain cells from damage. Mangosteen xanthones are potent antioxidants with a special affinity for supporting the circulatory system. One such xanthone, mangostin, helps the body battle the oxidation of LDL cholesterol. Resveratrol protects both the nervous system and the cardiovascular system. Turmeric contains curcumin, a polyphenol with wonderful health benefits for the immune, circulatory and glandular systems. In studies, curcumin has been shown to inhibit oxidative DNA damage. The açai berry contains powerful anthocyanins—water-soluble compounds with potent antioxidant actions. This fruit also helps protect against superoxide and peroxyl radicals. Other ingredients offer similar antioxidant benefits.
Ingredients:
Green tea leaves extract, mangosteen pericarp extract, turmeric root extract, quercetin dehydrate, resveratrol, apple fruit extract, açai (acai) berry concentrate and selenium.
Recommended Use:
Take 1–2 capsules twice daily with meals.

Krill Oil with K2:

Benefits:
Supports cardiovascular system and brain function.
Provides joint and skin support.
Is a natural source of astaxanthin, a powerful antioxidant carotenoid.
Provides omega-3 essential fatty acids (EPA and DHA).
May support already-normal-range cholesterol levels.
How It Works:
Antarctic Krill provides a highly bioavailable source of EPA and DHA, essential omega-3 fatty acids (EFAs). EFAs are vital to the health of the cell membrane and also contribute to cardiovascular, brain and structural system function. They provide joint and skin support and may help support cholesterol levels already within the normal range. Krill is also a natural source of astaxanthin, a powerful antioxidant carotenoid. Krill oil also contains phospholipids, which bind to the omega-3 fatty acids, improving their absorption in the body. These phospholipids provide strength and elasticity to the cell membrane, helping to keep toxins out and let nutrients and oxygen in. Vitamin K2 provides added support for the cardiovascular system and bone health.
Ingredients:
20 mcg vitamin K (25% of Daily Value), plus krill oil, fish oil, EPA, DHA and astaxanthin.
Recommended Use:
Take 1 capsule with a meal one or two times daily.

Now these suggestions may prove to be beneficial to some, however, one thing I do BELIEVE as a practitioner, is each one of us is created as unique individuals.  Meaning there is not always a “one size fits all approach” to plug-n-play when it comes to how our bodies respond to nutritional changes and deficiencies.

So, the information I share to offer better understanding for my readers and followers, shouldn’t substitute for following through with a personal consultation so we can identify which nutritional plan, approach that needs to be specifically tailored to your situation.  The body, YOUR body is the messenger….  For any interested in taking that approach you can go to http://www.mkt.com/harvested-health-llc .

How Do You Start Your Day?

coffee How many of you wouldn’t even dream of starting your day without a big ole cup of hot Java?  How many of you are relying on more than just coffee to get you through your day, like Red Bulls, or other commercial Energy drinks that are loaded with caffeine and other unmentionables?

No doubt you have learned to “enjoy” the coffee, who doesn’t LOVE the smell of it brewing, I have to admit I DO, and yes I do drink a nice mug of hot coffee in the morning, but I also love a hot mug of herbal tea, or even Dandiblend which is a wonderful  herbal coffee substitute.

When we are young guns our systems can tolerate and eliminate the toxic effects of coffee through our urine.  But as we get a tad more “seasoned”, and the kidneys gradually get some wear and tear on them, those acids begin to pile up in your system drop by drop.  How can you tell, well a couple tell tale signs would be “fatigue”, “headaches” that hit mid day or you may even wake up with it, “depressed” because you feel like your get up and go, got up and went.  So the rollercoaster effect begins, and you have to keep sending artificial stimulation to keep rolling through your day.  For the moment you feel better, maybe even feel like you could run a marathon, but that’s because you are kicking your endocrine glands, usually the “adrenals” to over produce.  That “feel-good” sensation is really a mask hiding the truth folks.  You can only over stimulate the endocrine glands for so long before they decide to go on strike.

There is a medical diagnosis referred to as “toxemia”, which is an overload of impurities that have build up in the system including the blood and it makes a person feel less than wonderful to say the least.  It can be very dangerous, even deadly.  When the body has headed in this direction  the body has to break out the emergency manual and figure out the fastest way to get these impurities out!  So typically the body sets up road blocks and redirects these, and calls on the endocrine glands to jump to the rescue.

Here’s the way it works:  We toss some food down the hatch, most folks are not reaching for the healthy “lets do a body good” choices.   If we walk back in history to our ancient ancestors their primitive diet looks nothing whatsoever like ours does today, yet Man’s digestive system back then, and our digestive system today is still the same, (so much for evolution.) So when we are choking down chili cheese hot dogs, fried meats, boat loads of fried French fries, donuts, cookies, pop, alcohol etc. and very little in the way of water, fresh fruits and veggies, toxins build up and that affects our liver.  Now whether the liver breaks down early or later in life depends upon how good of an organ it was at birth.  But trust me break down it will,(many folks have a back up going on with calcified bile called gall stones, and many are losing that major “helper” for the liver) and when it fails to filter and neutralize these toxins from our blood, a back up line of defense has to step up to the task.   That would be the endocrine glands.  The key ones that come into play : Pituitary (at base of the brain), the thyroid (located in the front of our neck), and the adrenals (which are the hats on top of both our kidneys.)

These gland secrete hormones, meaning there is no duct for anything to flow from, these glands are pushed into hyper-drive, forced to manufacture more of their secretion.  Keep in mind that the amount of a gland’s secretion is in exact ratio to the volume of blood entering it, the gland is then enlarged by this extra blood supply, which can bring some physical consequences.

The pituitary being located at the base of the brain doesn’t have a whole bunch of extra room to swell, it’s encased in a bony cup at the base of the skull.  This pressure can cause symptoms that can really get one’s attention: Migraines, the common type of epilepsy, acromegaly and blindness.

Now, I personally can attest to the migraine headaches, I experienced my first one when I was 8 years old. it lasted an entire week.  I couldn’t open my eyes, hold food down, could not stand an ounce of noise, had no urge to even try to speak, and I caught on rather quickly that crying made the pain worse so, they needed to be a no tears episodes.  My diet as a child was horrible, sweets were never restricted growing up, neither was soda. It took me years to connect the dots that anything with MSG would trigger a headache from hell, so Beef Jerky, Slim Jims, Funyon’s, lunchmeats, Chinese food, commercial salad dressings, lots of fast foods like White Caste hamburgers, these foods kept me bed ridden quite a bit growing up.  Then when Aspertame came on the scene, we had a whole new set of problems, it not only caused migraines for me, but caused sever neurological problems for me as well.

When the body is backed up with all these toxins the truth be told the headache/migraine is really an alcoholic type of headache.  I’m not talking about 8 year olds tipping their parents top shelf brandy when no one is looking, this is alcohol that ends up being manufactured in the patient’s own stomach.  When the sugars ferment and starches that are on overload in someone’s diet.

LETS TALK ABOUT THOSE ENDOCRINE GLANDS:

So what happens when the thyroid gland which controls ALL functions of the body’s three layers of skin?  We have the outer skin which we see and touch, the inner skin which is the mucous membrane, and the middle skin which is the serous membrane, which lines the pleural, pericardial, peritoneal and cranial cavities and our joints.

skin

There is a normal function of our outer skin which is to exhale gases, sweat out water and certain toxic salt substances and  it oils itself and its hair with special oil glands.  When this elimination is done forcefully, there are names of the dastardly effects that keep many Dermatologists busy: Eczema, ichthyosis and psoriasis are some of the common ones.  So is Acne.

thyroid

The next layer called mucous membranes, when the thyroid is under duress it may force toxins out through the mucous cells.  So when only the superficial cells of this inner skin are involved the secretion is just watery, doctors call it catarrh.  Yet as the deeper layers are affected, the discharge becomes muco-purulent (mucus and pus), sounds fabulous right?  Most know these as sinusitis, bronchitis, gastritis, enteritis, appendicitis, tonsillitis, mastitis, cervicitis, pyelitis,  notice they all end in “itis”…this means inflammation.

Adrenal

When we move on to the adrenal glands, these are what supplies us with on the spot energy when they sense we are in danger. Like when you walk up on a big spider and before you realize it you have screamed, done a weeks worth of aerobics in 2 seconds and your heart feels like its pumping outta your chest and you are probably sweating, (that’s what fight or flight might look like.)  When they secrete in this type of situation, our body goes into what is called “fight or flight” mode. Our body shuts down any other function that is not 100% needed so it can pulse all necessary energy into safety mode.

There is  necessary oxidation that is the fire of life, that must take place in our bodies.  The adrenal secretion is the agent that makes oxidation happen.  This secretion is so important that our body has other storage spots like the brain, the great nerve ganglia; the posterior pituitary, the sex glands and scattered areas throughout the kidneys.

The filtration process of our kidneys depends upon oxidation. So, consequently under stress, the kidney can be forced by the adrenals into elimination even to the point of destroying itself and elevating the blood pressure until a heart attack or other circulatory damage results.  We are hearing of more and more peeps on kidney dialysis these days, makes one wonder if this is just a coincidence or a evolutionary transit?

One of the other key functions of our adrenals is to regulate the strength of muscle tone.  So our skeletal muscles even our bowel muscle, I would stretch to say since all our organs are of a muscular design, everything is affected.  But lets roll back to the bowel muscle for a minute, we have 5 feet of bowel, with good well toned bowel muscle, our bowel function is perfect, effortless and regular.  Adrenal types, that is, individuals who are dominated by their adrenal glands, seldom suffer from constipation as long as the chemistry of the liver remains normal.  When an adrenal type becomes toxic from indigestion, they may notice that things become uncontrollable in the south pole region.  They usually experience weakened kidney issues or kidney disease, and have a weight on/weight off issue, they can lose weight but find they pack on the pounds too and this goes back and forth through out the years if they don’t address the issue.

DISEASE:

In my quest over the years, I have ran across a plethora of conflicting ideas on what actually causes disease.  There are those that take the stance that food has little to do with preparing the inner growing field for disease.  They stand on their beliefs that the body can utilize anything to good account with the exception of pure poisons.  So when it comes to the theories of toxemia, intestinal putrefaction, auto intoxication these are labeled as “faddist” and they refuse to take these seriously.  Dr. Logan Clendening in “The Human Body, stated: “what you want to eat will be good for you.  “what one relishes, nourishes “, “The appetite is a wonderfully sensitive instrument, a safe compass.  It keeps most of us exactly where we ought to be in weight and strength.”  I read that and thought WOW, can’t speak for how things looked back in 1927 when he wrote that book, but he died at the age of 61.

But if you just merely look around when your in public, and all the different products being sold as weight-loss products, one doesn’t need a scientific study to prove that our society is more “over” weight, than simmering at an “exactly where we ought to be weight & strength ” as Dr. Logan Clendening  so eloquently stated.

I found it interesting that in 1962, In his very first published book, Murray Bookchin, writing under the pseudonym “Lewis Herber”, warns of the dangers of pesticide use, and espouses an ecological and environmentalist worldview.
Our Synthetic Environment was one of the first books of the modern period in which an author espoused an ecological and environmentalist worldview. It predates Silent Spring (1962) by Rachel Carson, a more widely known book on the same topic widely credited as starting the environmental movement. (* http://www.ecology.iww.org)

Murray Bookchin wrote: “we are exchanging health for mere survival.  We have begun to measure man’s biological achievements, not in terms of his ability to lead a vigorous, physically untroubled life, but in terms of his ability to preserve his mere existence in an increasingly distorted environment.  Today, survival often entails ill health and rapid physical degeneration.  We are prepared to accept the fact that a relatively young individual will suffer from frequent headaches and digestive disturbance, continual nervous tension, insomnia, a persistent “cigarette cough.” a mouthful of decaying teeth, and respiratory ailments every winter.  We expect his physique to acquire the rotundity of a barrel shortly after the onset of middle age; we find nothing extraordinary in the fact that he is incapable of running more than a few yards without suffering loss of breath or walking a few miles without suffering exhaustion.”

That was back in 1962, not sure that much has appeared to change with his observation.  Harvard University published in 1957, the Findings of the United States Commission on Chronic Illness: “In 1950 an estimated 28 million Americans were suffering from chronic disease.  That number has NOT decreased despite all the “medical breakthroughs”, according to http://www.CDC.gov ; “Nov 14, 2016 – Chronic diseases are responsible for 7 of 10 deaths each year, and treating people with chronic diseases accounts for 86% of our nation’s health care costs.”  I can’t speak for anyone reading this post, but to me that is a staggering percentage.  We NEED a proverbial light bulb to blaze, not just light up.

I’m going to post more and move on to how our body moves through various “lines of defense” to do battle on our behalf.

It is my hope that I can light a flame of not only concern, but of determination in the hearts and minds of folks to start treating their bodies like the precious vessel that they are, your body is your most prized possession, treat it to the best of the best.

Until the next post:

Revelation: You Can Be Healthy

healthy%20living%20logo%20a

A little practitioner back ground on “ME”… I have never considered myself to be any sort of specialist! Nope… what I have come to realize is that folks who seek out my services are usually disappointed in allopathic medical routes – especially when the round after round of prescriptions that are recommended appear to merely mask their symptoms imprisoned in their body. They seek me out for dietary reform, usually because they have found out that food has something to do with their issues and physical symptoms.  The light bulb starts to burn brighter as they realize that whatever illness or health issue they are battling didn’t just decide that hey, Suzie Whatsherface looks like a good person to set up house keeping inside of, they have realized something that has been occurring  on a consistent basis had to have some sort of role to play in why they feel like they feel or why they are sick!

Many seek me out with noble intentions, willing to follow some nutritional advice and willing to try to experience better health through dietary and lifestyle changes.  Those folks are for obvious reasons easier to work with.

However, the average peep is more reluctant to change the diet routine they have followed all their lives.  They are not aware that nearly all bad food habits are actually “stimulation habits” that is, the body has almost automatically found out what makes it feel better for a mere half hour or so and what will mask the depression and fatigue for a short blink of time.  Some folks will eat a good amount of salt, others reach for their meat washed down with their choice of alcoholic beverages, while others well their go-to relief food of choice is sweets or a combo of foods that will prove to add to their actual health issues, not realizing that some of those very cravings are pointing to various nutrient issues that their bodies are actually deficient in.

Then when I take away their stimulation , they feel weak and depressed, they may get headaches and/or other unpleasant physical side-effects for a while as their body adjusts to the new food intake routine and the toxic overload is being taken to the proverbial curb.  I actually had a client who sent me an email about 4 days into their program and the body of the email read only this:  I LOVE MY PRACTITIONER, I LOVE MY NUTRITIONIST, I HATE THIS FOOD ROUTINE! with a bunch of emoji hearts to follow.  Sometimes, it’s a love/hate relationship…  I try to warn my clients that some not so pleasant symptoms can jump to the forefront.  This is usually that make or break moment as some clients decide that this lifestyle/nutritional reform just isn’t their cup of tea.  They came for immediate relief and instead initially feel worse. So they return to their stimulation habits.  It is a tragic decision, yet its one I cannot fight!

The other part of what I offer when I work with someone is I start them on the road called “understanding how MY body actually works”.  Some may ask questions, but most don’t seek to understand the inner workings, and  the truth is most practitioners  in their practices deal day in and day out with folks who are unthinking and who treat their bodies – which I believe to be the most priceless of ones possessions, with about the same reckless abandon of a toddler breaking in a new toy.  I ran across an old article from Life magazine from (December 7, 1962) that said:

“The body… runs on food and oxygen much as an auto runs on gasoline and oxygen. But right there the comparison ends. If it is not to stall or sputter, the auto must be fed exactly what it needs just when it needs it.  The body’s fuel system, on the other hand, is subject to the whimsical tastes and cravings of its proprietor.  It can handle extra food when it is already full and can go without when it is empty. And it must tolerate surprise doses of gin, smoke and really hot chili.  It does this heroic job remarkable well… Though people often think of the stomach as a finicky, delicate organ, it is actually so rugged it can tolerate virtually anything that is not downright poisonous or corrosive.”

I laughed out loud in the library when I read this because I thought WOW, this is true, our digestive system is always accommodating, and can tolerate many strange and foreign things we throw down the hatch. Yet sooner or later folks, depending on its present state and hereditary health factors, guess what?  IT BREAKS DOWN! We welcome almost with open arms dis-ease and illness.  The body becomes invaded through our fuel processing system as well as its transportation system through the digestive channel, which when our digestive system (food processor) breaks down we have issues.  When the fuel pump (heart) is impaired, heart disease stakes its rightful claim.  If the digestive system is overloaded too long with improper food residues, the coronary arteries get hard and a heart attack can sign its name in our guest book.  If the air you breathe is polluted, you get the additional signature in the guest book called respiratory issues.  If the water you drink is loaded with chlorine and fluorine, your body can be irritated by the caustic action, that also interferes with how one’s thyroid is able to uptake proper amounts of iodine it needs.  If your teeth are neglected, many suffer malnutrition because truth be told you can’t eat a wide range of healthy foods if you cannot “CHEW” it properly so one has to avoid certain hard to chew foods.

The other hard to swallow truth is even with an abundance of GOOD foods to choose from at all grocery stores, most folks rarely choose those.  They choose pre-cooked in a box breakfast foods, cookies, donuts, lets swallow those with a hot cup of java to get our morning rolling, or let’s have some white bread and toss in some thick gravy to stick to the ribs, ummmmmmm these are the breakfasts of champions?  If we are going to choose to exist on lifeless, over processed, insecticide sprayed foods: saturated with chemicals, then add coffee, tea, alcohol, chocolate, sweetened carbonated drinks, medicate an exhausted system with “ENERGY” drinks that are pure chemicals too, and we get MAD when we are told we have a disease, or any other serious health issue.  We act like we didn’t deserve it, yet if we hit replay and go back over the use and abuse so to speak, and if we are willing to be honest with ourselves; our choices all but invited in the issue. The truth is if we treated our cars like most do their bodies, their cars would be in the junk yard.

I wrote another piece called “Your body: A do it yourself repair shop”, but if your repair shop (body) doesn’t have the proper tools to work with why are you shocked that NO work has been done?  The truth is this isn’t something that has just popped on the scene in the past 50 yrs. either, A Frenchman, Constantin Volney, observed the diet of farmers in New England 164 years ago, He termed the following menu “deplorable”:

“In the morning at breakfast they douse their stomachs with a quart of hot water impregnated with tea or so slightly with coffee that it is mere colored water; and they could swallow almost without thinking hot bread half-baked, toast soaked in butter, cheese of the fattest kind, slices of salt or hung beef, ham, etc., all of which is nearly insoluble. At dinner they have boiled pastes under the name of puddings, and their sauces even for roast beef are melted butter; then potatoes and turnips swimming in hog’s lard, butter or fat.  Under the name of pie or pudding, their pastry is nothing but a greasy paste, never sufficiently baked.”

Guess what the top job in that era was; who were the folks making the big bucks?… Those that made dentures, yep false teeth, and they were skillfully made from hickory wood, and they are PRIZED today by antique collectors, which cracks me up, not sure why someone wants a set of wooden false teeth hickory wood or not sitting on a shelf as a trinket, folks are unique I suppose.

One of mans most valuable possession has been his body’s ability to repair itself. Even animals have that built-in button for survival.  Ever seen your dog go outside and eat grass? How about the wounded cat that licks its wounds clean; the lice-infested bird that wallows in dust?  This primitive instinct, is at the root of all the healing arts; it is as ancient as life itself, as useful to the first folks as it is to us today. Why, then, have we forgotten it and left it behind us?

WHY DO WE MEMORIZE USELESS INFORMATION?

I’ve always asked myself this burning question?  How come baseball fans can tell you the last World Series scores, some peeps can remember a poem that they were made to memorize in school as a child.  I can still recite commercial jingles from the 1960’s and 70’s, or I remember School House Rock from Saturday morning cartoons as a child, I still to this day can SING the preamble to the Constitution.  Some of the things we choose to memorize, that in truth is just stuff, it’s not likely being able to blurt out what the final score of the World Series in 1937 is going to prove useful in your everyday life, it may earn ya some bucks if that question comes up and your on the game show Jeopardy .  Yet truth is many are baffled and confused about the own inner workings of their body, and when it’s under attack with pain, and breakdown, they can’t trouble shoot to lead them back to the cause.  I use this analogy with clients all the time, that symptoms are not your enemy, they are your body’s built-in 911 call center, and your dash-board lights are flashing service something, and we ignore it or paste over it with something that will dull the light or better yet pull the fuse in the form of a pain-killer so we don’t feel it anymore, but that doesn’t mean you fixed the issue!

Most don’t take much interest in the inner workings of their body until they get sick, then they begin to study and take a crash course.  We pay attention most of the time to what we see on the outside, the skin, hair, nails, our weight.  I am always amazed when I get clients and by the way; this statement is one I hear frequently.  “I DON’T HAVE TIME TO FEEL LIKE THIS”…. and I have to be honest with them and say well, this didn’t just jump on the scene yesterday, it’s been brewing beneath the surface for quite some time, you chose to ignore the early 911 signs. When you are holding water we call that edema, or you have a boil on the skin somewhere your body is forever fighting a biological batter for survival, that is what it is programmed to do, so these body responses are actually wise, the body’s way of calling for a complete quarantine, a thick barricade of inflammatory tissue to prevent the enemy (microbes or poisons) from spreading.  Comfortable… NO,  Genius, YES!

There is a process, inflammation triggers pain to prevent you from using something that is injured. Ever sprain an ankle? The first thing it does is swell up, then the swelling triggers pain, that’s so you don’t walk on it, but…. we take pain killers, and wrap it up so we can still use it and wonder why it takes so much longer to heal? Oh,, cuz we don’t have time for this….

DISEASE: CLASS 101

To understand disease you need to understand the way the living cell is comprised. Every walking, talking, breathing person on planet earth is composed of more than a trillion cells, and those cells are tremendously complicated in their mechanics.  When the body becomes diseased, its cells turn abnormal in a variety of ways.

There are 2 classes of disease: Infectious which is caused by viruses or bacteria entering into the body; degenerative, caused, in general, by toxic substances manufactured by the disturbed organs themselves or by something foreign in our food or air.  When your body is fighting against any of these, (the wonder of your body “fearfully and wonderfully made,) it’s job at the front line of defense, is to neutralize the offender.

According to Dr. Hans Selye in “The Stress of Life,” “pain, though an unwelcome intruder, serves a useful purpose.  In disease, it is a warning given by nature to enforce rest as an aid to healing.  It is also a warning that we may have suffered an injury.  The nerve endings, receptors, transmit a message along the nerve pathways by electrical impulses to the brain, and we experience pain as a reaction.  A variety of sensory stimuli can trigger pain: chemical; mechanical, such as twisting of a limb or pressure; thermal, as extreme cold, or heat; or electrical.  When there is inflammation because of disease or injury, there is usually a combination of mechanical pressure and chemical irritation.  Pain is always a warning that something is amiss; thus, to the physician, it is one of the most important symptoms of disease.”

Where I tend to differ with others in my field, some believe that certain aches, pains and debilitating health issues are part of our aging process…. I disagree that this is normal and what one should look forward too.  I believe that real health is so much more.  It is achieved by working with the laws of nature; and when we break those laws, we get sick. I don’t believe that being healthy is a certificate you are awarded by being born, I believe that to remain healthy one needs to be taking ACTIVE participation in living as healthy as they can.  If one takes the time to do the research, it’s on the internet, you will find multiple articles that state the American people take more prescription medications and submit their bodies to more surgeries and vaccinations than that of any other country!  Yet next to digestive issues which is what tops the charts for most doctor visits, the next would be anxiety about the state of ones health when they don’t feel good.

Sometimes folks want to hold my feet to the fire because I speak too blunt.  Yet I personally believe that another reason folks stay in the dark is because too many topics are not addressed straight on.  I’m going to toss this out in the open. Health is NOT something that comes in a capsule or something you can buy at the local drugstore.  If you work with the natural laws of nature, I believe that ANYONE can AFFORD to be healthy.  By God’s design our body is orchestrated and assembled as a near perfect machine in its inner and outer workings.  So many actions that are taking place within that you are completely unaware of that the body performs all with one reason, to keep the body as healthy as possible. That alone is a miracle .  Yet through I don’t know, maybe ignorance, fear and greed the proverbial monkey wrench is tossed into the workings of our miracle machine (body).  The truth is “health is simple; few have it.” said Dr. Bieler.

BASIC FOOD FOUNDATION:

Let me share some of what I’ve learned and applied over the years.  Take for example a vegetable from the squash family; Zucchini, it doesn’t offer a whole bunch of flavor it’s actually pretty bland tasting, yet its super rich in sodium.  Sodium, is one of the most important elements our body needs to balance alkalinity. (No table salt will NOT fill the bill in performing the same need in the body). So zucchini is a super healthy veggie to add to one’s salad, steam, add to some mixed veggie dish, juice etc.  Now if we move onto a key player in the body which is our liver, that organ is a storehouse of sodium, which sodium is needed to maintain the acid/alkaline equilibrium in our bodies.  We cannot be healthy without this balance.  So, that bland little zucchini is both food and medicine and if you know you have a sick liver, guess what is a good thing to start adding daily to ones food choices to restore an exhausted liver.  ZUCCHINI….

When I’m working with clients I try to teach them how to incorporate foods therapeutically, and to get “back to basics”.  I do not  have any “miracle pills.”  There are plenty of folks out there already peddling to those who are sick and tired of being sick and tired and want  what is claimed to be a quick fix like it was yesterday; if that is what your heart is looking for, that’s probably where you will feel more comfortable. Do I ever recommend nutritional supplementation?  Yes, I do, I also apply Orthomolecular Nutrition into the mix when I am working with a client.  But the foundation is all based around food.

I Work with my clients and teach them how their body works, and help them glide into lifestyle changes that are going to do a body good!  I equip them with tools, it’s up to THEM to apply those tools and LET their body do its own repair work!  My focus is on that of “health” NOT on “disease”.  It sounds silly to me, to tell a client how they can live WITH their illness, I’d rather help them understand what changes they can make so their body can by all rights get strong enough to kick it to the curb.

Typically when someone ends up scheduling a consultation with me; they feel sick, discouraged, they have tried to use different pills, shots and/or surgeries to keep their “sickness” under control.  If I’ve done my job well, my clients learn to cooperate with and not work against nature, they get better and are better equipped in the future to help themselves.  For many this takes TIME, the one thing many walk in saying, I can’t feel like this I don’t have TIME, yet if you don’t MAKE the TIME to address the issues, laying in a bed staring at the ceiling could be the next stop the train makes! Again, health is simple yet few have it, it takes a willingness to change what obviously isn’t working.  If you keep doing what you’ve always done and are expecting a different result, I hear tell that’s the definition of “insanity.”

Hippocrates believed that a diseased body needed a period of rest, not only physical rest, but chemical rest, which he considered even more important.  That Chemical rest could only be achieved by withholding food, which gives the organs in the body their opportunity to take anything that has accumulated as waste and do an internal house cleaning.

I love looking up and reading about Doctors from way back when… My 2nd career choice is called being lost for hours in the library, (don’t laugh it really could be a career.)  So here are some old-time Doc’s I ran across while being LOST in the library… In England, Dr. Thomas Sydenham’s concept of disease was narrowed down into one sentence: “Disease, is nothing else but an attempt on the part of the body to rid itself of morbific matter.”  Morbific, I love it, no one talks like that any more, but that word alone sure gets your attention.  Dr. Sydenham lived in the 17th century,  then there was another, a Dutchman who followed in Sydenhams footsteps, Hermann Boerhaave who said: “Disease is cured with the help of nature by neutralization and excretion of morbific matter.”  There’s that word again, morbific… I think I  could call getting lost for days in a library a career I could do this research on-line, but I LOVE the smell of the books inside the library! Sorry, side-tracked, moving right along….

Just prior to Louis Pasteur’s day was a Cellular pathologist Rudolf Virchow who was a pioneer in his field back in the day, and he stated:  “If I could live my life over again, I would devote it to proving that germs seek their natural habitat – diseased tissues rather than being the cause of diseased tissue: e.g. mosquitoes seek the stagnant water, but don’t cause the pool to become stagnant.”  Maybe re-read this paragraph…

The way our digestive system and the mechanics of how it performs its duties is obviously inherited,  our eating HABITS are LEARNED habits.  If you turn your toddler loose outside, will they not attempt to eat rocks, sticks and dirt?  You as parents have to teach them that those are NOT foods.  So why are we not doing the same by teaching them that fast food, refined sugar in the form of baked deserts are NOT healthy foods?  Because we can’t just tell them we have to show them by what they SEE us eating!  We lead by example not just by the words we speak.  The big revelation folks is always that our ACTIONS carry more clout than our words!

Hippocrates – “The urgency of the body to regain its normal, healthy state.  This is called vis medicatrix naturae – the healing power of nature which cures from within!”

It wasn’t until Louis Pasteur’s theory that disease came from outside the body, which for most folks is way easier to accept, because we are victims vs. a contributor to the issue.  That the medical arena of that day shifted gears and began to rely more on drug therapy vs. lifestyle adaptation. It’s when people started to take the “why is this happening to me, or I didn’t ask for this” mentality. Yet, Dr. Bieler M.D. used to tell his patients, “Your pain, misery and illness result from your own dietary mistakes and drugs.  You are suffering because you are filled with toxic wastes caused by your diet of poorly selected food filled with artificial flavorings, preservatives, synthetics, over-processed ingredients, too much stimulating food, too few natural vitamins from vegetables and fruits.  If you selected wholesome natural foods, they were probably improperly prepared, boiled to death or overheated in oil, then covered with harmful condiments.  The normal chemistry of your digestion is upset not only by these toxic wastes but also by harmful drugs, unhealthy  living habits that include lack of exercise.  So, highly poisonous materials toxins which have stagnated in your blood, impair the filters and eliminative organs, chief of which are the kidneys, liver bowels and skin.” That was back in 1965, and you know what, his practice was of such that Hollywood folks sought him out with their health issues, even when he tried to close his practice and retire, he ended up seeing patients in his home, he was a popular Doctor back in the day.

Early in my own practice, I studied Dr. Bieler’s methods intensely because it made sense!  I made his first cornerstone towards building health the starting line.  I start all my client’s on a juice fast.  If my client’s stick to the routine properly some will actually experience that of a fever which the body uses to burn up waste so it can be eliminated.

We have 2 important organs that take out our trash.  The liver and the kidneys.  The liver eliminates typically through the bowels, and the kidneys dump through the bladder.  There are times when the liver is congested and the waste makes it way into the blood, we don’t want it there.  The kidney’s if they are inflamed, toxins are backed up in the blood too.  So toxic dirty blood must get rid of these toxins or the person dies, so nature uses substitute avenues of elimination when this happens.  The lungs are used as the backup removal system when the kidneys can’t keep up.  So when folks tell me they have horrible respiratory issues, we work on strengthening the kidneys.  They are elimination partners.  The elimination partner for the liver is the skin, which when the overflow is being sent to the skin it results in breakouts like acne, eczema, and boils.

So, when there is a waste back up taking place in the body, and other organs are being used as emergency avenues of elimination,  seeing disease as an unnatural elimination process in order to speed along elimination; a couple things need to take place for the person to start to feel better.

Folks, I am passionate about working with people, I love to teach, and empower others to take back control of their health and proper maintenance of their bodies.  I know this post was a long one, but those that needed to read it, will in fact read it to the end.  Even if that is only one person than that is the person I was prompted by God to write this for to offer them maybe an element of hope where they may feel hopeless in their quest for feeling healthier.

Motivational Monday: Beyond Numbers On The Scale…

weight-lossWeight-loss is about much more than dropping pounds.  Just ask anyone who has successfully lost weight, only to find that they are fighting the same pounds a few months or years later.  Clearly eating habits and exercise require a physical commitment.  But lasting, successful weight loss involves a powerful emotional component as well.

Developing a healthy attitude toward ones body, viewing ones weight and food choices can be quite challenging in our society today.  On one hand, food is a major element of just about every social gathering and occasion.  We celebrate with food, fight stress with food, we even drown our sorrows with food.  On the other hand, the media constantly presents us with impossible body ideals that are unrealistic and even unhealthy for the vast majority of folks.  Air brushing, Photoshop and other tricks of the trade allow models and celebrities to appear thinner than they are in real life, giving us the perception that we too can and should strive for that appearance.  How many of us gals grew up playing with Barbie dolls, this famous gal is way out of proportion physically.

Where does this leave us? For some it can be an emotional rollercoaster leaving us dependent on the wrong kind of foods.  For others, a negative self image of their bodies and false hope in getting think without too much effort.  More importantly, now that you have made the physical commitment to find a healthier you, how do you make the emotional commitment?

A good place to start is by finding your motivation. Are you losing weight to look better? To fit into a swimsuit before an upcoming cruise or reunion? To provide a healthy example to your kids?  To combat Type 2 diabetes? To save money on your medical bills?  The stronger, more meaningful and realistic your motivation, the more likely you will succeed with your program.  For that reason, those who are motivated by health tend to make lasting changes more often than those who are motivated by magazines, or social events.

Weight loss experts encourage accepting yourself, loving who you are right now and then finding the motivation to set goals to allow yourself to be the best you can be.

If you are one of the millions with “lose weight” on your New Year’s resolutions list this year, resolve something new: resolve to LOVE yourself no matter what, and then plan the lifestyle changes toward a healthier body.  That healthier body needs to begin with your own self image of what that is supposed to look like for YOU, not what society says you should shoot for.

Here’s a tip:

When beginning a weight loss journey, be prepared to think long-term!  Many weight loss centers ban the use of the word “diet” because it tends to be associated with short-term and drastic eating plans.  Rather than focusing on a lifestyle change commitment to yourself.  A better way to approach it is to commit yourself to learning about what changes are necessary to fuel and nourish your body with healthier foods.  It’s amazing what a simple change in ones mindset can do.  The exact same nutrition program can be viewed by one person as a diet and another as a lifestyle change.  Let me ask you which view point do you think sees the greater success?

Remember that healthy is going to look different on each person, 109 lbs. isn’t going to look healthy on all body frames and heights.  So shoot for healthy for YOU, get past the stress of what the numbers register on your scale, instead judge your progress by how different you feel, are you sleeping better, is the texture of your skin changing, are your hair and nails looking healthier?  How are your clothes fitting, most will also see a drastic improvement in their emotional health as well.  Let me assure you that good health goes way beyond being thin.  Plenty of folks who are thin are far from being healthy.

You want to incorporate some form of an exercise program to build better muscle tone, it also keeps your bones stronger to prevent fractures as we age, it improves circulation and lung function, better sleep patterns.  So part of getting healthier needs to incorporate exercise there is no way around it.  Our bodies were designed to MOVE!  If you don’t have time to rock it out at a gym, then go for a walk, or turn on your radio and dance for 20-30 mins. in the comfort of your own home, just move the body, break a sweat and have some fun.

If you’d like some one on one assistance with putting a healthier program together to achieve your goal.  I’m here for you, you can also schedule a consultation with me.  For some they need that accountability of having someone to keep them motivated through their transformational journey.  I’d be honored to help.  You can schedule that by going to http://www.mkt.com/harvested-health-llc  and click on the 1 hr. consultation.

Lets make 2017 the year that “getting healthier”, takes roots and the journey begins.  No more excuses!

Healthfully yours,

Jodi Barnett N.D.

Ingredients:
Novel herbal blend—this patent-pending combination of two herbs—Sphaeranthus indicus and Garcinia mangostana—may help promote weight loss, especially as fat, when combined with a weight-reduction diet, according to initial research. The extracts are thought to promote fat breakdown and weight loss. Specifically, they may affect levels of adiponectin in the body. Secreted mostly by white adipose tissue, adiponectin levels tend to be lower in individuals who are overweight. Rhodiola root extract—native to high-altitude regions of Europe and Asia, Rhodiola roseahas well documented “adaptogen” properties. Adaptogenic herbs like rhodiola help safely counteract adverse physical, chemical or biological stressors. Study results indicate that rhodiola may improve physical performance and mental capacity, and it promotes a sense of well being. Our extract is standardized to 3% of the active ingredient rosavin, the amount used in clinical trials. Green coffee bean extract (decaffeinated)— chlorogenic acid, thought to be the active ingredient in safe, caffeine-free green coffee bean extract (Coffea canephora), may help block sugar absorption, promoting satiety and healthy blood sugar levels already in the normal range. In initial studies, taking green coffee bean extract has resulted in weight loss, much of it fat, in overweight individuals. Green tea leaf extract (decaffeinated)—drinking polyphenol-rich green tea (Camellia sinensis) has been linked to good health for centuries. Beyond already-documented benefits for cardiovascular health, brain health and healthy aging, the extract’s active components—including polyphenols such as epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG)—now show promise for weight loss. Researchers believe green tea may have a thermogenic (calorie- and fat-burning) effect and may inhibit fat absorption. Hesperidin bioflavonoid extract—found in citrus fruit, this phenol promotes blood flow and a healthy inflammatory response by helping support healthy blood vessels.

“9” Natural Immune Boosters

immune

9 Natural Immune Boosters
A vital immune system can mean the difference between a pleasant winter and a miserable one. Do your part to help your body stay strong with help from these gifts from Mother Nature:
1. ECHINACEA
The root and leaves of this purple coneflower have been used for centuries by American Indians and Europeans to boost immunity. Echinacea triggers the body’s white blood cells to attack unwanted invaders. According to research, it can significantly increase the body’s white blood cell count. Specifically, this herb increases the body’s count of T-cells, interferon, interleukin and immunoglobulin.
2. PROBIOTICS (FRIENDLY FLORA)
Believe it or not, your gut is a key part of your immune system. And eating plenty of friendly bacteria (probiotics) helps strengthen your immunity!
A recent study published in Postgraduate Medicine found that women who took a daily probiotic had higher levels of T-cells. T-cells are special white blood cells that support the immune system. So say “Yum!” to yogurt or get crazy for sauerkraut. But check the labels. Some yogurts offer very minimal amounts of friendly flora. Consider taking a quality probiotic supplement.
3. VITAMIN C
Many of us hit the orange juice or eat extra oranges or grapefruits during the winter months. Citrus and other red fruits and veggies (red peppers, strawberries and even leafy greens) contain vitamin C, which helps protect and support the immune system. It also strengthens the cardiovascular system, supports eye health and more.
4. VITAMIN D3
Long-cherished for its support of the bones, vitamin D3 (the sunlight vitamin) is opening eyes for its immune-system benefits. Researchers are studying this nutrient to find out how it helps support immunity. It appears to help regulate the function of lymphocytes (an important type of white blood cells), the production of cytokines (another key white blood cell) and the activity of macrophages (protein messengers vital to immune function).
5. GARLIC
This flavorful and aromatic member of the onion family stimulates the production of important white blood cells. Garlic also helps quench free radicals in the bloodstream. It even supports heart health.
6. ELDERBERRY
The western U.S. and Canada are home to the Sambucus nigra or elderberry. Its properties have been studied by many scientists, and for good reason! It contains principals that stimulate the body to make cytokines, a type of protein molecule that enhances the immune system’s response to attacks. This dark-colored berry also contains powerful antioxidants, including anthocyanins.
7. MUSHROOMS
Most people think of mushrooms as a flavor enhancer or use them to bulk up a dish. But some mushrooms offer much more than that. Researchers have found that reishi and cordyceps mushrooms contain chemicals that offer a host of immune benefits, including boosting the immune system and offering lung support. And, guys, it may help with prostate health as well!
8. ZINC
This essential trace mineral supports the body’s immunity and aids with nerve function. Zinc seems to work the best when taken at the first sign of concern.
9. OLIVE LEAF
Hold the pimientos. We’re talking about olive leaf here, not cocktail garnishes or pizza toppings. The leaves of this Mediterranean staple offer a powerhouse of protection against unwanted invaders. Olive leaf contains a bitter compound called oleuropein that also provides fabulous support to the circulatory system. And it battles free radical damage.
4 TIPS TO KEEP IMMUNE SYSTEM STRONG:
Minimize stress.
Stay active.
Eat a healthful diet. Steer clear of sugary and high-fat foods, which can slow and/or weaken immune response.
Socialize. People with friends have stronger immune systems than those who feel alone. Of course, try not to socialize with people who are sick

Healthfully yours,

Cholesterol: It’s Essential Role….

good-and-bad-cholesterol

CHOLESTEROL: Americans have become so conditioned to avoid all foods containing cholesterol.  This is a grave mistake as it places a much bigger burden on the body….

I am concerned at the alarming rate of clients that are on Statin medications because they have been told their cholesterol levels are out of control.  Yet I dig into the Statin industry and realize they have enjoyed at least a 30 yr. run of steadily increasing profits, as it finds ever more ways to justify expanding the definition of the segment of the population that qualifies for statin therapy.

Now in DEFENSE of these wonder drugs: Large, placebo-controlled studies have provided evidence that statins can substantially reduce the incidence of heart attack.  High serum cholesterol is indeed correlated with heart disease, and statins, by interfering with the body’s ability to synthesize cholesterol, are extremely effective in lowering the numbers.  Heart disease is the number one cause of death in the U.S. and, increasingly, worldwide.  What’s not to like about statin drugs?

Realizing I am not alone as I begin to question how beneficial reducing one’s cholesterol using drugs can be to a persons health, being that the body actually produces LDL, it serves a purpose!  Then I stumble upon Stephanie Seneff, Ph.D. who writes: “I have spent much of my time in the last few years combing the research literature on metabolism, diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer’s and statin drugs.  Thus far, in addition to posting essays on the web, I have, together with collaborators published two journal articles related to metabolism, diabetes and heart disease (Seneffl et al., 2011) and Alzheimer’s disease (Seneff2 et al., 2011).  Two more articles, concerning a crucial role for cholesterol sulfate in metabolism, are currently under review (Seneff3 et al., Seneff 4 et.al.).  I have been driven by the need to understand how a drug that interferes with the synthesis of cholesterol, a nutrient that is essential to human life, could possibly have a positive impact on health.  I have finally been rewarded with an explanation for an apparent positive benefit of statins that I can believe, but one that soundly refutes the idea that statins are protective.  I will, in fact, make the bold claim that nobody qualifies for statin therapy, and that statin drugs can be best described as toxins.”

She started to examine the claims that statins would cut the incidence of heart attacks by a 3rd.  What does that mean?  Well according to Seneff a meta-study reviewing seven drug trials, involving 42,848 patients, ranging over a three to five year period, showed a 29% decreased risk of a major cardiac event, this was recorded (Thavendiranathan et al, 2006).  But the thing is, heart attacks were rare among this group, so what this then translates to in absolute terms is that 60 patients would need to be treated for an average of 4.3 years to protect one of them from a single heart attack.  However, essentially all of them would experience increased frailty and mental decline.

Seneff states that the impact of the damage due to the statin anti-cholesterol mythology extends far beyond those who actually consume the statin pills.  Because Cholesterol has been demonized by the statin industry, and as a consequence American have become conditioned to avoid all foods containing cholesterol.  Which is a huge MISTAKE, because it places a bigger burden on the body to synthesize sufficient cholesterol to support the body’s needs, and it deprives the body of several essential nutrients.

Does anyone remember the “attack” against eating EGGS, eat only the whites, toss out the yolks because it will raise your cholesterol!  When in fact eggs ARE very healthy and it’s the YOLK that contains all the important nutrients.  It’s the yolk that allows the chick embryo to mature and grow into what we call a “chicken”.

Many of my clients will bring copies of current lab work with them to our consultation.  I am beginning to believe that this issue is becoming wide-spread, so many are struggling with being deficient in crucial nutrients:
*choline
*zinc
*niacin
*Vitamin A
*Vitamin D
Funny thing is that from a food perspective all the foods that naturally contain these crucial nutrients are ones that they have been advised to avoid consuming because they contain cholesterol.

Let me hit you with some EDUCATION about the roll cholesterol plays in the history of what you call your HEALTH:

Cholesterol is NOT the enemy, it is truly a remarkable element that truth be told without it, the human body can’t live!  There are some distinguishing factors that us mammals have as an advantage over plants:
1. A nervous system
2. mobility
3. cholesterol

Cholesterol, absent from plants, is the key molecule that allows humans and animals to have mobility and a nervous system.  Cholesterol has chemical properties that are very unique, these are exploited in the lipid bilayers that surround all animal cells:  as cholesterol concentrations are increased, membrane fluidity is decreased, up to a certain critical concentration, after which cholesterol start to increase fluidity (Haines, 2001)( I’m tossing in these references lest you think I’m pulling this stuff out of thin air).

The Cells exploit this property to a wonderful advantage for ion transport, which is essential for both mobility and nerve signal transport. (If the nerves cannot send a signal, guess what NOTHING is able to be mobile, meaning US!)

In addition to the role of ion transportation, cholesterol is also the precursor to vitamin D3; the sex hormones, estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone; and the steroid hormones such as cortisol.  So let me ask you, how many folks who have been taking statin meds for any extended length of time find that they cannot keep their vitamin D3 levels elevated to where it should be? Or how many find their sexual urges seem to have packed their bags and headed to unknown lands?  Who finds that their muscle and joint inflammatory issues seem to climb onto the scene because there is now an imbalance in their cortisol production which then begins to affect their blood sugar levels as well as blood pressure and I can continue to pinpoint more in the domino decline.

You see Cholesterol is ABSOLUTELY essential to the cell membranes of all of our cells, where it protects the cell not only from ion leaks, but also from oxidation damage to membrane fats.  While the brain contains only 2% of the body’s weight, it houses 25% of the body’s cholesterol.  As a matter of fact; cholesterol is VITAL to the brain for nerve signal transport at synapses and through the long axons that communicate from one side of the brain to the other.  Cholesterol sulfate plays an important role in the metabolism of fats via bile acids, as well as in immune defenses against invasion by pathogenic organisms.

I know I’m tossing a whole bunch of technical stuff at you, however, I think many folks need to be able to understand the vital role cholesterol actually plans in the total scope of “health.”

Statins inhibit the action of an enzyme, HMG coenzyme A reductase, that is needed as a catalyst in an early step in the 25-step process that produces cholesterol.  This step is an early step in the synthesis of a whole bunch of other powerful biological substances that are involved in cellular regulation and antioxidant effects.  One of these which you have heard and seen me talk about on frequent posts, “coenzyme Q10”, which is present in the greatest concentration in the heart, which plays a huge role in mitochondrial energy production and acts as a powerhouse antioxidant (Gottlieb et al, 2000)

LETS TALK ABOUT LDL, HDL

Most folks have to taught to focus and worry about elevated serum levels of low density lipoproteins (LDL), with respect to heart disease.  LDL is not a type of cholesterol, but rather can be viewed as a container that transports fats, cholesterol, vitamin D, and fat soluble antioxidants to all the tissues in the body.  These are NOT water soluble nutrients so they must be packaged up and transported inside the LDL particles in the blood stream.  If you interfere with the production of LDL, you then reduce the bioavailability of all these nutrients to your body’s cells.

LDL particles also contain a special protein called “apoB: that enables LDL to deliver it’s goods to the cells that are in need.  ApoB is vulnerable to attack by glucose and other blood sugars, especially fructose.  Diabetes results in an increased concentration of sugar in the blood, which further compromises the LDL particles by gumming up apoB.  Oxidized and glycated LDL particles become less efficient in delivering their contents to the cells.  So they stick around longer in the bloodstream, and the measured serum LDL level goes UP.

Once the LDL particles have delivered their contents, they become small dense LDL particles, remnants that would normally be returned to the liver to be broken down and recycled. (the body process is so AMAZING)  But once the LDL particles have finally delivered their contents, they then become small dense LDL particles, remnants that would ordinarily be returned to the liver to be broken down and recycled.  But the attached sugars interfere with this process as well, so the task of breaking them down is now assumed by macrophages in the artery wall and elsewhere in the body, thru a scavenger operation.  The macrophages are especially skilled to extract cholesterol from damaged LDL particles and insert it into HDL particles.  Small dense LDL particles become trapped in the artery wall so that the macrophages can salvage and recycle their contents and this is the basic source of atherosclerosis.

HDL particles are referred to as the “good” cholesterol, and the amount of cholesterol in HDL particles is the lipid metric with the strongest correlation with heart disease, where less cholesterol is associated with increased risk.  So the macrophages in the plaque are actually performing a very useful role in increasing the amount of HDL cholesterol and reducing the amount of small dense LDL.

LDL particles which are produced by the liver, synthesizes cholesterol to insert into their shells, as well as into their contents.  The liver is responsible for breaking down fructose and converting it into fat (Collison et al, 2009).  Fructose is 10X more active than glucose at glycating proteins, and is therefore very dangerous in the blood serum (Seneff1et al., 2011).  When you eat a lot of fructose (like high fructose corn syrup present in lots of processed foods and carbonated drinks), the liver is burdened with getting the fructose out of the blood and converting it to fat, and it can not keep up with cholesterol supply.  Like Stated before, fats can not be safely transported if there is not enough cholesterol.  the liver has to ship out all that fat produced from the fructose, so it produces low quality LDL particles, containing insufficient protective cholesterol.  So you end up with a really bad situation where the LDL particles are vulnerable to attack, and attacking sugars are readily available to do damage.

COCONUT WATER AS EFFECTIVE AS STATIN DRUG:
A recent study indicated that coconut water contains many nutritional and therapeutic properties.  a natural acid and sterile solution that contains several biologically active components:
* L-arginine
*ascorbic acid
*minerals like calcium, magnesium and potassium
all of which have beneficial effects on lipid levels.

The research authors stated, “recent studies in our lab showed that both tender and mature coconut water feeding significantly reduced hyperlipidemia in cholesterol fed rats.”,  The current study evaluated the hypolipidemic effect of coconut water compared to the lipid lowering drug lovastatin in rats fed a fat cholesterol enriched diet ad libitum for 45 days.  the authors state in their summary of the study.  “Coconut water has had lowering effect similar to the drug lovastatin in rats fed the fat cholesterol enriched diet.”  You can view the full report: Sandhya, V.G, Rajamohan, T., 2006 “beneficial effects of coconut water feeding on lipid metabolism in cholesterol fed rats.” J. Med. Food 9, 400-407. See study reference online at http://www.greenmedinfo.com

I know this is long, and I plan on continuing tomorrow on how Statins affect the muscles … so tune in tomorrow.

The Gray Zone… skin tone…

gray-skin

CLIENT: I had a consultation with a client, and one of the 1st things I noticed about him was how particularly “gray” his skin tone was. Of course that wasn’t the reason for his visit, as a matter of fact his main reason was, he just always felt “REALLY TIRED” all the time. Zero energy!

SANYO DIGITAL CAMERA

I go thru a client intake/history with each person, and the fatigue kept being his center of topic, although, I found out he’d struggled with chronic indigestion and heartburn. He pointed out that both symptoms had been keeping company with him for upwards of 20 yrs., he basically had “stock” in the Tums/Rolaids since his early 40’s. I detected a note of accomplishment in his voice and demeanor when he stated he was now taking Tagamet every day for the past 7 yrs. and his indigestion was no longer an issue.
I posed this to him, ” you know stomachs are naturally designed to secrete enough acid to turn even large meals into the equivalent of soupy mush?” “Yeah, I know that in general, but all the doctors told me that my indigestion & heartburn are due to too much acid,” was his reply.
I asked: did anyone ever actually measure your stomach-acid production?”
His answer: “No… but the symptoms sure have gone away since I blocked all that acid out.”
My response: “and a river will dry up if we stop all the rain,” “Maybe that’s an advantage for a little while if the river has been overflowing, but what happens if we stop the rain permanently?”
He thought for a brief second, “permanently?” “At least 7 yrs..” “Quite a drought. Nothing would grow.”
I chucked and stated: “Right, and if we shut off or neutralize our stomach’s natural acidity for more than brief intervals, there are similar consequences. First, we don’t break down foods as well, and many nutrients, especially essential amino acids, certain minerals, and at least two B vitamins, aren’t made as available by natural acid digestion as they usually are, and aren’t properly absorbed into our bloodstreams, So our cells don’t have the normal amounts of nutrients for nourishment. Second, when that acidified soup empties out of the stomach into the upper small intestine, it triggers the secretion of hormones that in turn stimulate the3 pancreas and gallbladder to make or release their own digestive secretions, such as enzymes, bicarbonate, and bile. Without the acid trigger, these hormones are under-produced, and the next stages in digestion doesn’t work as well as they should either. This makes another whole group of nutrients less available to your cells.”
“So it’s like a domino of events. If the acidity isn’t there, then other parts of digestion will fail to trigger too.” He asked ( My favorite part of my job is when I see evidence of the lightbulb getting brighter).
I said: “Exactly, and we don’t even know if we know absolutely all the domino’s in the digestive system, we are fearfully and wonderfully made.”
His response was: “No wonder I’m tired, I’ve literally dried up a lot of my digestion for years. Why didn’t anyone tell me about this?”
“I don’t know, it’s all right there in the basic textbooks for medical students. But that’s not all: The same basic textbooks list a 3rd consequence of low or no stomach-acid production. Let’s think about it like this: What happens if I put bacteria or parasites into an acid in a test tube?”
He says: “I’m not sure, but I would presume they’d die?”
RIGHT, they die & turn into a minor protein supplement. Textbooks of gastroenterology actually call stomach acid the acid barrier to intestinal-tract infection. Also, everyone knows that farther down the intestinal tract is home to a nice variety of micro-organisms called intestinal flora, that also help with digestion, secrete a few important vitamins, and generally behave themselves. But if the acid-alkaline balance, also called the pH; isn’t just right, then many of the friendly micro-organisms literally die out and are replaced by not-so- friendly germs. Some of them will excrete substances that are actually toxic to our cells, that are absorbed and then spread all thru the body.
So now my Gray skinned client, is shifting in his chair. “So not only have I been semi-starving myself but also maybe encouraging toxins from my gut to get around my whole system? I shook my head : Yup I’m afraid so!
Next best question: “So could blocking my normal stomach function be why I have all this extreme fatigue?” I answered: Very likely, so the 1st course of action is to work on restoring normal digestion as much as possible, make up for at least 7yrs. of unintended malnutrition, and, if necessary, work to restore normal gut flora. Then we’ll see.”
He was concerned about stopping the Tagamet, fearful he’d have indigestion and heartburn all over again. I stated there are natural ways to stop indigestion and heartburn without blocking stomach acid.
The truth is, you can eat all the right foods and still slowly starve to death, if the food processor cannot process the food rolling down the slide. Underproduction of stomach acid in the majority of cases is the issue! the official name is HYPROCHLORHYDRIA (meaning low or no stomach acid), it is one of the most common digestive malfunctions, and it is often accompanied by other, seemingly unrelated health issues. Inadequate digestion also becomes more frequent as we age. So remember, even if you are eating the best healthiest diet, or for a particular ailment, if the food you are eating is incompletely digested or assimilated, your body still isn’t getting the nutrients it needs and won’t be effective!
LESSON: our bodies are made up of 60 or so essential nutrients (essential being defined as nutrients without which we’d sooner or later drop dead); how healthy can you be if your body isn’t absorbing even one of those nutrients? And what if a dozen or more nutrients are in short supply? If our foods and supplements don’t encounter the proper acid and enzymes they won’t digest and absorb, which will cause malnutrition. In essence, you could be eating all you need but still starving.
Many peeps who have too little stomach acid are being treated as if they have TOO much, probably because the symptoms are similar. 10-15% of the population suffers from low stomach acid production and are being misdiagnosed and mistreated.
Why would you want to take antacids or acid blockers when your stomach is already weak and not digesting? It’s easy symptom relief that’s why. But it is symptom relief that is offering ZERO remedy /recovery! Let me emphasize that antacid sales are a booming business,,, that statistic alone should alert you to how many folks are living with incomplete digestion!
SIGNS OF LOW HCL:
*BLOATING
*BELCHING
*BURNING SENSATION AFTER EATING
*FEELING LIKE FOOD IS JUST SITTING THERE AND NOT DIGESTING
*INABILITY TO EAT MORE THAN A SMALL AMOUNT OF FOOD WITHOUT FEELING FULL
*CONSTIPATION (note you can still have a bowel movement each day and be struggling with incomplete digestion, check and see if your stool sinks to the bottom of the toilet, if so, that’s incomplete digestion)
*WEAK PEELING EASILY BROKEN FINGERNAILS.
*HAIR LOSS
*GASSINESS
*DILATION OF CAPILLARIES IN THE CHEEKS AND ON THE NOSE (in non-alcoholics)
There is a long list of disease frequently associated with low stomach acidity which includes:
*DIABETES
*UNDER/OVER ACTIVE THYROID
*CHILDHOOD ASTHMA
*ECZEMA
*GALLBLADDER DISEASE,
*OSTEOPOROSIS
*RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS,
*CHRONIC HIVES
*LUPUS
*WEAK ADRENALS
*CHRONIC HEPATITIS
*VITILIGO
*ROSACEA
If you struggle and suffer from some of these symptoms or diseases mentioned and you suspect that your problem is poor digestion, I’d be honored to work with you and your inner food processor.
Update on my Mr. GRAY man, his skin color slowly returned to the normal brown/pink skin tones. His fatigue also waned and was replaced by increased energy. His wife noted improvements in his MOOD and ATTITUDE, 6 months later, he declared himself “back to normal.” He was skeptical at first, but noticed remarkable improvements within the 1st 2 weeks and progress just kept improving from that point forward.
Hope this was helpful, especially as we are rocking into the holiday “gorging” season,,, many will be wanting to reach for the anti-acids, how bout you schedule an appointment before the holidays hit full throttle, you maybe able to enjoy the banquet table vs. resentment and misery! go to http://www.mkt.com/harvested-health-llc and book & pre-pay for your consultation and we can take that 1st step.
