It’s NOT IF You’re Toxic, But How Toxic ARE YOU!

Many people are struggling with a variety of health issues that don’t fall into a specific diagnosis category YET… but they know they don’t feel well, they are not sleeping well, they have nothing for energy.  There is a truth that is being sorely overlooked…..

IT’S NOT IF YOU’RE TOXIC, BUT HOW TOXIC ARE YOU….

The truth is that we are exposed to 6 million pounds of mercury and 2.5 billion pounds of other toxins in our air, water and food supple each year!

Unfortunately, these toxins and more end up in our bodies.  In fact. the Center for Disease Control found that the average person has 420 chemicals known to be highly harmful in their bodies.  These toxins negatively affect the function of our bodies in ways we are just now beginning to understand, making it difficult to achiever and maintain optimal health.

According to “science”… We are only 10% human.  Up to 90% of the cells in our bodies are actually bacteria, fungi and other microbes, and most of them live in and are influenced by our gut.  In turn, these microbes influence many key body functions, including cardiovascular, respiratory, neurological, glandular and immune function, as well as blood sugar, skin, weight, emotions, energy and more.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________

TOXIC WORLD – TOXIC GUT – TOXIC HEALTH

The toxic burden of our modern world, together with stress, poor diets and lifestyles, disrupts the healthy balance of bacteria in our gut, leading to poor health.

As bad bacteria dominate the gut, they produce “endotoxins” that weaken and damage the lining of the gut, allowing food and toxins to escape.  Many refer to this as “leaky gut syndrome”.

As these toxins spread throughout the body, they impair healthy function and create a fertile path to poor health.

“Before starting Purify 2.0, I was in pretty good shape. But felt tired and sluggish.  Now I have way more energy to play with my kids and enjoy life! My blood sugar levels and bad cholesterol (LDL) went way down, and my skin issues cleared up.  Being healthy feels good mentally and physically.”  Bryan R., Ohio

Are You Addicted To Sugar?

This is a question everyone needs to ask themselves…. why?  Well because I am of the conviction that the majority of us are held hostage by our taste buds!

Many don’t take the time to realize that they rely on sugar for emotional comfort and  sugar in a variety of forms are used for celebrations of all sorts:

  • foods with sugar in them are pleasant of course to our taste buds
  • sweet foods are associated with FUN (i.e. birthdays, holidays, weddings, in fact every social celebration has a dessert table)
  • sugar is also associated with love

What about Children and “sugar”…. well:

  • Sugar appears to calm children down, at least temporarily
  • hospitals give sugar (glucose) water to infants… “why” ?
  • parents placate and reward their kids with sweet treats
  • sugar has a sweet, almost innocent reputation and to most people depriving kids of it is considered to be punishment by many

My youngest son had intussusception at 6 months old that required surgery.  Its a telescoping that often blocks foods/fluids from passing through the intestines.  It can also cut off blood supply to parts of the intestine. Hence, he struggled every time we tried to introduce solid foods until he was almost 3 years old.  For his 1st birthday party where it is typical to offer the child their own smash cake loaded with frosting, my son had plain yogurt.  The relatives in attendance just couldn’t wrap themselves around that factor.  Of course I had cake for everyone else, but I found that every time I turned my back someone was trying to offer him frosting on their fingers because they felt it cruel.  Yet none of them took the time to understand the depth of what was happening inside his digestive track.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

There is a general view of sugar in our society both from a scientific stance and a general connection.  What do those look like?

  1. Sugar = energy (this is true but there are other forms of sugar other than the white stuff)
  2. source doesn’t matter, refined sugars are no different than the sugars found in foods
  3. the only real problem is “too much”.
  4. sugar alone is not responsible for diabetes, it’s just one factor.

These are what most hang their choices and justification on and they are leading themselves down a rabbit hole of misinformation to justify why they continue to eat it.

  1. Sugar = energy they body NEEDS sugar for energy conversion and lots of foods we eat are in fact converted into a form of sugar for that reason, grains, veggies and fruits.  We call them carbohydrates and there are both complex and simple carbohydrates.  Simple carbs convert faster, whereas the complex carbs work more like a time release.
  2. Source doesn’t matter, refined sugars are no different than the sugars found in foods is hog wash… they are not even in the same category.
  3. The only real problem is “too much”. when the truth is a variety of different sugars are added to and hidden into even what is labeled as “health foods”.
  4. Sugar alone is not responsible for diabetes, it’s just one factor, well there is some element of truth to that statement but also leaves the wiggle room for personal justification.  So many diabetics USE their insulin as a means to justify their ends.  Meaning they choose to eat that sleeve of cookies and  adjust their insulin intake in the attempt to fix the imbalance which places them on a vehicle that is heading out of control.

_________________________________________________________________________________________________

There is an epidemic in our country it’s called “DIABETES”…. According to the National Diabetes Statistics Report, 2017; as of 2015 an estimated 30.3 million Americans had diabetes (9.4% of the total population, 12/2% of adults)

There are also about 7.2 million folks who have diabetes and they are not even aware yet that they do.

The amount of children being diagnosed is becoming staggering.

Diabetes is on the rise.  It is no longer a disease of predominantly rich nations, in fact, the prevalence of diabetes is steadily increasing everywhere, most markedly in the world’s middle income countries.

Globally, there are an estimated 422 million adults who were living with diabetes in 2014, compared to 108 million in 1980.  The global prevalence (which means “age-standardized) of diabetes has nearly doubled since 1980, rising from 4.7% to 8/5% in the adult population. This reflects an increase in associated risk factors like being overweight or obese.

There are several dietary practices that are lined to unhealthy body weight and/or type 2 diabetes risk, which includes high intake of saturated fatty acids, high total fat intake and inadequate consumption of dietary fiber.  High intake of sugar sweetened drinks, which contain considerable amounts of free sugars, increases the likelihood of being overweight or obese, particularly among our kids.

recent evidence further suggests an association between high intake of sugar sweetened drinks and increased risk of type 2 diabetes.  The new choice of sweet drinks for our kiddo’s are the energy drinks! Which are also leaching the calcium from their bones while also bathing their bodies with ridiculous amounts of refined and artificial sugars.

The WHO Dietary recommendations and the Food and Agriculture Organization states that for the prevention of type 2 diabetes one should include:

  • Limiting saturated fatty acid intake to less than 10% of total energy intake
  • get adequate intake of dietary fiber through regular consumption of wholegrain cereals, legumes, fruits and vegetables
  • Reducing ones intake of free sugars to less than 10% of total energy intake and suggests that further reduction to 5% could bring additional health benefits.

_______________________________________________________________________________________

Here’s a more accurate view of Sugar and it’s connection to the health issues that go with it:

  • Sugar is potential energy which REQUIRES vitamins and minerals to process it into usable energy in the body.  Refined and artificial sugars do NOT supply any vitamins or minerals.
  • The form or source of the sugar makes a BIG difference
  • Refined carbohydrates are the primary cause of diabetes

The truth is that nutrients are required to process sugar into a form of energy that the body can actually USE.

These included:

  1. vitamins which is why white flour has to be enriched, they processed all the naturally occurring vitamins out of it to make it WHITE.
  2. minerals
  3. amino acids
  4. without these nutrients energy cannot be extracted from sugar efficiently.
  5. natural foods contain these nutrients, refined carbs do not.

_________________________________________________________________________________________

The Nuts and Bolts:  SUGAR IS ADDICTIVE!

I often encourage my patients to try this test:

  1. don’t eat anything with refined sugar in it for 2 weeks (many struggle big time because that means they have to look at their salad dressings, their condiments like ketchup, soups, gravies, chips with coatings/flavors, barbecue sauces, chicken and beef broths ) start reading labels and you will see where it’s all hidden right under our noses.
  2. if they have kids, I also tell them to not let them have anything with sugar for a few days ; and you will see all the classic symptoms of withdraws.

The truth has been proven through science that sugar stimulates the reward centers in our brain, causing a release of dopamine.

Dopamine neurons are what motivate and reward us for pursuing worthwhile goals in our life.

This part of the brain is also stimulated by drugs like nicotine, cocaine and amphetamines.

Regular sugar intake overstimulates dopamine causing the neurons to be blunted which create the cravings.

Actual brain scans have shone how the reward centers in the brain light up like a pin ball machine when sugar is consumed!

_________________________________________________________________________________________

Food Manufacturers have done their research and KNOW that sugar is addicting so if they add it to their products it will keep you coming back for more.  The truth is that sugar is often combined with other stimulants to increase their effects:

  • caffeine in tea, coffee and sodas
  • flavored alcoholic drinks
  • cigarettes: YEP, the addition of sugar to tobacco not only increased tobacco sales, it appears to have made them more addictive.

So the bottom line is that source matters and its way more than just a “chemistry” thing.

It’s not just a matter of nutritional density (lack of vitamins/minerals). The refining process denatures the sugar so it no longer has a compatible energy with the body and acts more like a drug than a food!

________________________________________________________________________________________

Here’s another experiment you can try at home. This is another piece of homework I like to give my patients:

  1. Cut up some sweet fruits you like, like apples or bananas (both are popular choices), KEEP eating them until you lose the desire to take another bite.  Your stomach will probably not be physically full, but you will get a feeling like you just cannot eat another bite.  The body exhibits a response like an automatic shut off switch.
  2. Next take some foods you like with refined sugar, candy, cookies, cake.  Eat them until you lose the desire to eat any more.  Chances are you can continue to nibble on these foods even if you are physically full.  You can eat the whole package of cookies, you can eat several BIG pieces of cake with frosting, you can eat the lions share of candy bars.  You see when the Vitamins/minerals are absent, it interferes with the way the body was designed by God to know when to say when!

Think about this, have you ever found yourself “making room” for desert even after your stomach feels full from a meal?  The mechanics that tell you to stop eating, you have had enough doesn’t seem to work with sugar.  It acts more like a drug than a food, the more you eat the more you crave!

The initial effect of sugar is “pleasure” remember the dopamine release.  This is not an actual increase in energy production, but an increase in energy discharge which is why the let down usually follows and brings with it some irritability, anxiety, fatigue and for some mild depression, and many “a nap”!

Those celebration events we all attend, ever pay attention to those kiddo’s after the cake and ice cream has been served?  They usually get loud, rowdy, we call it hyperactive and then irritable within less than an hour.  They start to whine, cry, even pick fights with each other.

__________________________________________________________________________________________

Ok So now I’m gonna get to the heart of the matter…. WHY QUIT?  I mean lets face it; an alcoholic isn’t going to quite drinking and a smoker isn’t going to quit smoking until they see a reason to… right?

Same reason no one is willingly going to quit a sugar habit until they recognize the benefits of doing so!  So let me offer you some of those benefits:

  1. weight-loss usually follows refraining from sugar intake
  2. energy levels climb and become more stable
  3. the immune system gets stronger and many with autoimmune issues start to see less flare ups
  4. improved digestion
  5. reduced risk of degenerative diseases, like heart disease, cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer’s and neuropathy, and less periodontal gum disease issues!
  6. more positive and stable emotions
  7. less anxiety
  8. less anger/irritability
  9. better memory
  10. better focus/concentration
  11. greater mental clarity
  12. lower blood pressure
  13. healthier skin/sugar is connected to many forms of acne issues
  14. reduction in headaches including migraines
  15. reduced muscle/joint pain
  16. reduced inflammation issues
  17. improved hormone balance
  18. relief from PMS and erectile dysfunction
  19. improved sexual drive/performance

There’s a whole host of benefits attached to walking away from refined and artificial sugars! please don’t think substituting an artificial sugar for the refined sugar is the answer either because most all of those are excito-toxins which have a horrible effect on the central nervous system.

__________________________________________________________________________________________

Let me show you some basics “STEPS”. Remember we need to walk before we run!

So where to begin?

  1. eliminate all refined sugars, high fructose corn syrup, white flour and other refined carbohydrates
  2. Satisfy your sweet tooth with more natural sugar sources like:
  • frush fruit
  • dried fruits
  • raw honey preferable with the pollen still in place
  • real grade A maple syrup
  • molasses
  • Xylitol
  • Stevia (the herb which will be “GREEN” not the “white” form which is over processed)

Xylitol is not a natural sugar per se.  What it is is an isolated sugar alcohol that is derived from corn cobs or birch bark.

It contains 40% less calories than sugar and has a low glycemic index and can be used as a one to one ratio in place of table sugar where you don’t want the taste of honey, maple sugar bleeding through your recipe.

Using it to activate yeast however, WONT work.

It naturally carries some antibacterial properties to it so it won’t contribute to cavities which is why it’s now being used in lots of toothpastes and mouthwashes.  It can also help inhibit sinus issues and ear infections.

Where are some of the places Sugar is hiding as an additive?

  • Beverages: soda, energy drinks, sweetened tea/coffee, fruit juices that are bottled,
  • canned fruits
  • breads
  • pasta sauces
  • ketchup/BBQ sauces
  • salad dressings
  • energy bars
  • flavored yogurts
  • soups/gravy that are canned
  • chicken, beef, vegetable broths
  • flavored chips that have any sort of coatings for flavor

These are the popular choices, and our health keeps paying a higher price for convenience!

Ok, so what is the second step?

Eat more healthy fats and proteins:

  1.  Good fats reduce appetite and balance blood sugar levels.  So good fats include organic butter/cream, coconut oil, Extra virgin olive oil, avocados/nuts
  2. Avoid processed vegetable oils, margarine and shortening
  3. Protein intake also helps.
  4. Eggs
  5. organic meats
  6. nuts/nut butters
  7. beans/legumes

Step Three:

Refined carbohydrates encourage the growth of yeast and bacteria in our intestines.  These are unfriendly foe that send signals to our brain that causes us to crave more sugar.  So balancing this which is called dysbiosis in the intestinal tract helps reduce sugar cravings.

How does one start to regain lost ground for improving the good microbes in the gut?Helpful herbs would be:

  1. goldenseal,
  2. barberry,
  3. berberine
  4. cinnamon
  5. Peppermint oil (enteric coated to take in pill form)
  6. anti-fungal formulas to kill the yeast overgrowth
  7. fiber supplements to help move the bowels
  8. probiotics are a MUST!

Step Four:

What helps reduce the cravings, remember sugar is addictive and the body is used to giving into the addiction so many need help with shutting off that signal.  Some herbs that have proven to be helpful from a nutritional perspective:

  1. spirulina
  2. chlorella
  3. licorice root
  4. eleuthero or Korean ginseng
  5. garcinia,
  6. chromium

Step Five:

Blood sugar balancers

  1. Chinese Yin-Increasing formulas
  2. blood sugar balancing formulas
  3. single herbs: cinnamon
  4. fenugreek
  5. nopal
  6. bitter melon
  7. Minerals: Chromium
  8. vanadium
  9. zinc
  10. magnesium

_________________________________________________________________________________________________

Ok so in closing, the truth is that many need help walking away from sugar.  It’s almost easier for someone to quit drinking alcohol then it is to give up sugar.  I mean lets face it you can avoid being in environments where people are drinking if you are trying to give it up.  But sugar is everywhere, it’s at every get together, every restaurant, you are bombarded with commercials on television, it’s laced in common food snacks we all have grown to love.  Its a real BATTLE!

The best way to approach this is side by side with someone who has had the same battle to overcome!  If you are interested in a personalized nutritional program tailored to your specific needs vs. a one size fits all approach.  Lets get an appointment scheduled.

Why Not Store bought Juices?

Fruits and VegetablesWhen I’m working with my patient’s, part of my nutritional recommendations will ALWAYS include fresh “homemade” juices vs. store bought ones.  Many sigh and give me the eye-roll, but let me tell you there is nothing like making fresh raw veggie or fruit juices at home with your own juicer.

I KNOW juicing takes time, energy and a commitment to the routine. But let’s face it… IF you want to be healthier and feel better, why would you think that requires no “commitment, time or energy” to make that a reality?

It’s easy with advertising to fall into the fog of belief that the availability and variety of store-bought juices that are taking up so much space in our grocery stores, even in the coolers at gas stations and convenient stores are tempting.  This market is exploding and it tempts us because it’s convenient, but folks it’s truly unreliable marketing, and they are using pseudo-healthy buzzwords.  So here’s the scoop on how to understand the juice labels at the grocery store and choose the best store-bought juices for you and your family.

(I highly recommend you purchase the book “The Food Babe Way” by Vani Hari she has been beyond dedicated to empowering folks with the knowledge of what is hidden in the foods folks are eating)

______________________________________________________________________________________________

When you see “100% Juice”, let me state those words mean NOTHING… Food companies are allowed to say “100% Juice” on the label even when the juice contains additives, flavorings or preservatives.

Concentrate” is really just a fancy name for syrup:  Juice concentrates are made from fruits & vegetables that are heated down to a syrup and then have added water.  The concentration process involves both the addition and subtraction of chemicals and natural plant by-products in order to condense the juice.  During concentration, fruits and vegetables lose flavor.  This is WHY companies then have to ADD flavorings back in to give the juice a fresh taste.

“Not from concentrate” could mean flavored:  According to the book Squeezed:  What you Don’t Know about Orange Juice, by Alissa Hamilton, companies store orange juice in giant tanks and extract the oxygen from them.  This then preserves the liquid and prevents it from spoiling for up to a year!  However, this storage system causes the orange juice to lose all of its flavor.  So the industry uses” Flavor packs” to re-flavor the juice, (does this sound as gross to you as it does to me?)

GMO’S:  I have had folks message me and tell me… “I’m so sick of hearing about GMO’s already”, well Genetically Modified foods ARE “impostors”, foods that have been grown after the seeds have been modified in a laboratory.  They are not what God gave us.  I’m going to continue to push this envelop and YOU should too, our cries keep falling upon deaf ears, however, where your voice will speak the loudest is through your SPENDING power, STOP buying what they are selling…. Many juice companies use citric acid to extend the shelf life of their product.  You would think citric acid comes from citrus, like Lemons, oranges, and limes, BUT it doesn’t.  Most food manufacturers use genetically engineered corn and sugar beets to create citric acid, by synthetically fermenting the glucose from these crops in a lab.  And some juice companies go as far as adding sugar (which could be from GMO sugar beets), high-fructose corn syrup (from GMO corn), and other ingredients that could contain GMOs.

Synthetic ingredients:  The sneakiest ingredients lurking in juice come in the form of synthetics made in a lab.  These include Fibersol-2 (a proprietary synthetic digestion-resistant fiber), frutooligosaccharides (synthetic fibers and sweeteners), and inulin (an artificial and invisible fiber that’s added to foods to increase fiber content).  Avoid synthetic ingredients in your diet, because they’re usually made from petroleum, coal, and DMOs, none of which offer any beneficial nutrients.

Pasteurization:   This very process KILLS all raw enzymes, minerals and vitamins, which means it kills off our reasons for drinking the juice in the first place.  Heat kills bad stuff and the good stuff, making the juice pretty much worthless.  Juice companies sometimes even replenish the lost vitamin content with synthetic vitamins because there is barely any nutrition left after they process.  Furthermore, most companies create vitamins through chemical manipulation and synthesis, not from actual fruits and vegetables.

CHOOSE THE best STORE-BOUGHT JUICE

I intentionally chose NOT to put the word “best” in lower case letters in this caption, because freshly juiced is always going to be the BEST.  But now that I’ve pointed out commercial juices empty contribution to the nutritional input.  Here are some juice choices that offer some better options IF you are going to spend your money on store bought juices.

Best: Fresh Raw Organic:

  • Suja juice
  • Suja Elements
  • Juice Press
  • Organic Avenue
  • Luna’s Living Kitchen
  • Viva Raw
  • TumericALIVE
  • Blue Print

Better: 100% Organic, Not from Concentrate

  • Uncle Matt’s Organic
  • 365 Everyday Value
  • Lakewood
  • Bolthouse Farms

Questionable: Organic, but from Concentrate or with Additives

  • Santa Cruz Organic
  • Honest Kids
  • Purity

Worst: Nonorganic, Pasteurized

  • V8
  • Naked Juice
  • Zico
  • POM Wonderful
  • Simply Orange
  • Tropicana
  • Ocean Spray
  • Minute Maid
  • Mott’s
  • Del Monte
  • Welch’s

WHAT EQUIPMENT DO I NEED TO MAKE MY OWN FRESH JUICES FROM HOME?

There are a wide variety of different juicers for sale and with these choices there is a varied price point as well.  Some juicers are easier to clean than others, and some are made with higher quality workmanship than others.  Over the years I’ve used more than my fair share of juicers.  I’m offering a list below starting with MY personal/professional favorite.

RECOMMENDED JUICERS:

CHAMPION JUICER:  This is super easy to clean, it’s a masticating juicer that grinds the vegetables against a filter, rather than working as a centrifuge, it also offers you to make your own fresh nut butters, fresh baby foods, even fresh frozen fruit sorbets.

Price point for this machine is “UNDER” $300

BREVILLE JUICER: This offers a stainless steel centrifuge that spins the vegetables until they separate into juice and pulp.  It’s a bit more of a challenge to clean after using and I felt the noise factor was louder than I was comfortable with.  But it’s a good juicer that gets the job done.

Price point for this machine is “UNDER $300”

JACK LALANNE JUICER: This was one of my 1st juicers, its a centrifuge juicer.  It’s lower in price than most centrifuge juicers, it’s by far one of the harder ones to clean, but for those on a budget, it offers a nice affordable price point to get you going with preparing healthy home-made fresh juices for you and your family.

Price point for this machine is “UNDER $150”

______________________________________________________________________________________

I encourage my patient’s to DRINK their juices on an empty stomach.  You don’t want to have the juices AFTER you have just eaten your meal.  You are lowering the benefit of drinking the juice and some experience some digestive issues like bloating, or even heartburn as a result.  The benefit of drinking your fresh juices on an empty stomach is because it allows the nutrients in the juice to go straight to your blood.  Having a meal already in your stomach is going to prevent this fast absorption from happening.  So IF you have already eaten a mean, wait a couple of hours to drink the juice.  If you ARE drinking your juice on an empty stomach as I recommend, wait about 20 mins. to down your breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Also, I’d like to add that NOT all produce is meant to be combined when it comes to juicing.  This is NOT the place to toss everything but the kitchen sink into the recipe because hey it’s produce and it’s healthy.  Digestion still needs to occur and some of the naturally occurring enzymes that are in various types of produce are NOT meant to be combined!

So with your greens, it’s fine to juice an apple in with those to add a bit of sweetness to the juice.  BUT any of your melons you choose to juice (which are delicious juiced), should be juiced “ALONE”, you can combine any of the MELONS together in a juice, but their enzymes are delicate and the body digests them quickly,  Ever notice that when you choose to eat watermelon as a dessert after a picnic meal you bloat and burp it up for what seems like forever?  That’s because everything “fermented” in the gut, it didn’t digest as it should.  All melons should be eaten and/or juiced BY THEMSELVES!

So I do work extensively with my clients with proper juicing recipes and what should and shouldn’t be combined.

JUICES ARE NOT MEANT TO REPLACE MEALS: Juices are wonderful tools for helping the body clean house and repair, but they are not meant to replace a meal, drinking them before meals, and between meals if you need an energizing pick me up in the middle of the day is wonderful.

Another health benefit of juicing is…. let’s be honest…. try as we may, many don’t eat near enough fruits and veggies each day, juicing is a wonderful healthy approach that allows you to reach your daily servings of fruits and vegetables, especially where our children are concerned.  Most kiddo’s will drink the daylights out of these juices before they sit and want to eat them with a fork.

Here is a wonderful juicer review link: https://www.reviews.com/juicer/ to help if you are uncertain which juicer would be right for you and your family.

I hope this was helpful….. As always I’d be over the moon to work with anyone who is wanting to benefit from changing their lifestyle and nutritional path for improving their energy and over-all health.

What Are The Body’s “Energy” Generators?

mitochondria

Mitochondria are cellular energy generators that supply virtually all the power you body requires for a healthy life span.  There is an abundance of published studies that underscores the critical importance of the mitochondria to our overall health, especially as we begin to age. Energy-intensive organs like the heart and brain are dense with mitochondria.

Until recently, the only natural ways for aging folks to increase the number of mitochondria in their bodies were long-term calorie restriction or exhaustive physical activity which are hard and impractical for most people to pull off.

The enormous amount of energy generated within the mitochondria exposes them to constant free radical attack.  Which results in mitochondrial decay which is  really the a hall-mark of aging.

So how do we combat this mitochondrial decay? CoQ10, coupled with Resveratrol they are  highly potent antioxidants.  The molecular stability of these enable them to facilitate thousands of biochemical reactions in the mitochondria, without breaking down, for maximum antioxidant and bioenergetics support.

When we supplement with CoQ10 and Resveratrol, we are helping to activate genes that promote formation of new mitochondria and beneficially interacts with genes directly involved in our mitochondrial health.  These same genes also support a healthy body weight, normal fat and sugar metabolism and youthful cellular proliferation.

Mitochondria possess their own DNA, distinct from the DNA that is contained in the nucleus.  Unfortunately, compared to nuclear  DNA, mitochondrial DNA is relatively unprotected.  CoQ10 and Resveratrol because of  their  antioxidant potency, offers favorable gene expression to support mitochondrial defense.

VITAL PROTECTION FOR THE AGING HEART & BRAIN

heart brain

CoQ10 alone is an essential nutrient, meaning your body needs it to protect and support proper heart and brain function.  A growing body of research indicates that CoQ10’s unique nutritional profile supports heart health and cognitive function.

CoQ10 supports heart cell function in the presence of free radicals and promotes blood flow in the heart muscle.

LOWERS INFLAMMATION COUPLED WITH A Mediterranean Diet.

inflammation

A study described in the Journals of Gerontology Series A revealed that the addition of CoQ10 to a Mediterranean diet lowers a number of indicators of inflammation in older men and women.  Spanish researchers enrolled 10 men and 10 ladies who were not being treated for inflammation or elevated lipids.  The regimens consisted of a Mediterranean diet, a Mediterranean diet supplemented with 200 mg. per day of CoQ10 , and a Western diet containing high amounts of saturated fat.

Consumption of the Mediterranean diet was found to be associated with a reduction in the expression of a number of genes involved in the inflammatory process.

*Authors Jose Lopez-Miranda and colleagues write that, “In healthy humans, plasma oxidative damage may be partially prevented by CoQ10 supplementation, which has been replicated in other populations, like psoriasis and coronary heart disease patients.”

Also, to note that folks who are taking any cholesterol medications, should be supplementing with CoQ10 because these medications will lower the amounts of CoQ10 in their body, which increases oxidative damage especially to the heart muscles.

Keeping our energy levels at healthy production is key as we age, so why not incorporate CoQ10 and Resveratrol into your daily routine?

One of the company’s as a Practitioner that I endorse is Natures Sunshine’s brand of CoQ10,  and Resveratrol; if you are interested, you can go to http://www.harvestedhealth.mynsp.com and begin to improve your mitochondria energy support and function as well as supporting your body’s reduction in inflammation.

WHAT IS ADRENAL BURNOUT?

Adrenal

Feeling irritable? Exhausted? Having trouble sleeping?

Your not alone, today’s fast paced living is stressing folks out, and the stress has been linked to a number of illnesses such as heart disease, high blood pressure, and increased risk for cancer according to Jason Block MD, a Robert Wood Johnson Scholar at Harvard.

Adrenal Burnout goes way beyond a bad day. Chronic stress causes the adrenal glands to release wave after wave of hormones that prep the body for a do or die situation.  Eventually these hormone reserves run low or come up empty.

________________________________________________________________________________

POTENTIAL SYMPTOMS:
achy joints
anxiety, blood sugar issues
brain fog
early morning fatigue
afternoon exhaustion
low sex drive
insomnia memory loss
slow recovery from illness

___________________________________________________________________________________
These are just some of the signs you can show that your adrenal glands could be in overdrive.  Get a Saliva/Urine analysis to accurately measure adrenal stress (QFA Analysis).
According to Elson M. Haas MD, mild stress acts as a useful motivation for activity and productivity.  But too much can generate many symptoms and diseases, medicated by changes in immune function, hormonal response, and biochemical reactions, which then impact the cardiovascular, digestive neurological or musculoskeletal systems.

The brain and pituitary gland respond to stress by releasing adrenocorticotropic hormone ACTH.  This stimulates the adrenals to increase production of the hormones epinephrine, norepinephrine and cortisol, as well as other hormones that influence metabolism and water balance.
With extreme stress, the adrenal gland ramps up your fight or flight reaction, which sharpens the senses and raises theheart rate, while slowing digestion and more important functions then take over.  But adrenaline increases blood pressure, adds stress on the heart, and raises blood sugar, increasing metabolic rate. Over time, our ability to cope with stress and to ounce back after a crisis can be compromised.
HOW DOES ONE FEED THE ADRENAL GLANDS?
If you are stressed out, your adrenal pilot light is probably burning 24/7.  Experiencing body aches, digestive distress, fatigue, nervousness, and sleep issues, are all signals you need to slow down and rest and recharge your batteries.  Your pilot light can blow out and your adrenals can slow down to a crawl.  Noticing that you are gaining weight in the belly area that no matter how much you exercise it won’t cooperate is another way you can begin to realize your adrenals are probably on overload.

Eating a healthier whole food diet, and making your mealtime as relaxins as possible. Ditch the cell phones, turn off the television and relax while eating your meals.  Cut out coffee, pop and other stimulants, they may temporarily feel like they are giving you energy, but after their affect they drop you like a hot rock.  Refined carbohydrated will increase blood sugar imbalances which due to adrenal overload are already running high.
Antioxidants, A, C, E, selenium and zinc are usually depleted during stress, put them back with a high quality whole food supplement.  Vitamin C offers cellular protecton and immune support, while allowing the adrenals to produce more cortisone and epinephrine.  Because this antioxidant is rapidly utilized and little gets stored in the body, take 1 to 2 grams in divided doses, every day if you are feeling stressed.  (that’s equivalent to 2000 mg.)
In a recent study, the B vitamin Choline which is a precursor for acetylcholine in the central nervous system was inversely associated with anxiety.  Taking more than the RDA for all the asily depleted B vitamins in two divided doses during the day but not in the evening as they can prevent sleep, according to Dr. Haas.

RESTORE BALANCE WITH HERBS:
Adrenals balance neurotransmitters, relieve anxiety, and ease you into restful sleep.  Adaptogens, medicinal plants that enhance your resistance to stress while increasing concentration and endurance, are pretty effective.

Rhodiola, Eleutrero (Siberian Ginseng), can be very helpful.  Conventional medicine barley recognizes adrenal fatigue, so don’t expect to find numerous double-blind placebo-controlled trials on this class of herbs.
Respected herbalists, however, have long recognized their balancing benefits.  When stress stops, adaptogens help the adrenal glands shut off faster.  Thses herbs also support adrenal function by allowing cells in the body access to more energy and by preventing oxidative damage.  For overall adrenal support Americn ginseng, ashwagandha, cordyceps, holy basil, licorice root, reishi, schisandra offer amazing adrenal support.  If you are generally fatigued yet have sleep issues, reach for herbal formulas that contain American ginseng, chinese wild yam, eleuthero, kudzu, licorice root, reishi, and schisandra.  Chronic stress and anxiety almost always affect the digestion process.  Taking bitters for better digestion, absorption and elimination before meals.
COMPLIMENTARY CHOICES:
Traditional Chinese medicine seeks to rebalance the body by supporting digestion and the liver as well as adrenals, making detoxification useful after intense stress.  Other effective holistic approaches include acuppuncture and relaxation techniques.  Last but not least, begin and end your day with something uplifting and spiritual that brings you outside of yourself and creates peace.

WHAT ARE ADRENAL GLAND?
They are a pair of triangular shaped organs that rest on top of the kidneys.  Each gland normally weights about 5 grams and is made up of two parts: the cortex, or outer sections, which is repsonsible for the production of coretisone, and the medulla, or central section which secretes adrenaline.
The cortex helps to maintain the salt and water balance in the body.  It is also involved in metabolism of carbohydrates and the regulation of lood sugar.  The cortex also is responsible for prodcing a sex hormone similar to that secreted by the testes.
The medulla produces the hormone epinephrine, also called adrenaline, when the body is under stress.  This hormone speeds up the rate of metabolism and produces other physiological changes designed to hep the body cope with danger.

  • ________________________________________________________________________________________
Reduced adrenal function may be indicated by:
    weakness and muscle wasting
    lethargy
    dizziness
    headaches
    memory issues
    food cravings
    allergies
    blood sugar issues
If the cortex is seriously underactive, a rare condition called Addison’s disease may develop, Symptoms include:
    fatigue
    loss of appetite
    dizziness
    fainting
    nausea
    moodiness
    decrease in body hair
    inability to cope with stress
    feeling cold
discoloration and darkening of the skin, (i.e. knees, elbows, scars, skin folds and creases in the palms are more noticeable when exposed to sun
mouth and freckles may appear darker
bands of pigment running the length of the nails and darkening of the hair.
  • _________________________________________________________________________________________
Cushing’s syndrome is a rare disorder caused by an over active adrenal cortex. Persons’ with Cushing’s syndrome take on a characteristic appearance: they generally are heavy in the abdomen and buttocks but have very thin limbs, and rounded moon faces.  Muscular weakness and wasting of muscles are also characteristic.  Round, red marks mimicking acne may appear on the face and eyelids may appear swollen.  Increased growth of body hair is common and woman may grow mustaches and in some cases beards.  Folks with Cushing’s generally are more prone to illness and take longer to heal.  Thinning of the skin from Cushing’s syndrome often leads to stretch marks and bruising.

The functioning of the adrenal glands can be impaired as a result of the extensive use of cortisone therapy for non endocrine disease, like arthritis and asthma.  The long term use of cortisone drugs can cause the adrenals to shrink in size.  Poor nutritional habits, smoking and alcohol and drug abuse can contribute toa drenal failure.

Essential nutrients:
Vitamin B complex: all B vitamins are necessary for adrenal function.
L-Tyrosine: 500 mg. daily on empty stomach, take with water or juice NOT with milk. ( Do not take L-tyrosine if you are taking an MAO inhibitor drug.)
Raw adrenal cortex glandulars:
Liquid Chlorophyll ES helps to keep the blood clean.
Coenzyme Q10 carries oxygen to all glands
Germanium Essential Oil:  enhances immune function (diffuse or apply topically with carrier oil to soles of both feet)
Potassium 99mg. daily needed to balance sodium, potassium is lost with this disorder.

ADRENAL GLAND FUNCTION SELF-TEST
Normally systolic blood pressure which is the 1st number in measurement of blood pressure i.e. 120/80 is approximately 10 points higher when you are standing than when you are lying down.  If the adrenal glands are not functioning properly, however, this may not be the case.

Take and compare the two blood pressure readings, one while lying downa nd one while standing.  1st, lie down and rest for 5 minutes, then take your blood pressure.  Stand up and immediately take your blood pressure again.  If your pressure reading is lower after you stand up, suspect reduced adrenal gland function.  The degree to which the blood pressure drops upon standing is often proportionate to the degree of hypo-adrenalism.

FOOD SUGGESTIONS:
Plenty of fresh frutis and veggies, green leafy ones.  Brewer’s yeast, brown rice, legumes, nuts, olive and safflower oils, seeds, wheat germ and whole grains.
Deep water ocean fish, salmon or tune at least 3 times per week.
Garlic, onions, shiitake mushrooms, pearl barley as these foods contain germanium a powerful stimulant of the immune system.
Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and tobacco these are toxic to the adrenal and other glands.
Get regular moderate exercise because exercise stimulates the adrenal glands and helps to relieve stress.
Don’t take these symptoms for granted, whenever our body displays symptoms it is the body’s way of alerting you that there are nutritional deficiencies, so FEED the body what it needs, and allow your body to be the messenger folks.

ALPHA LIPOIC ACID: Versatile Antioxidant

alpha lipoic acidUNIVERSAL VERSATILE ANTIOXIDANT

This is one of those antioxidants that is so versatile and beneficial for so many different body responses everyone should incorporate it into their daily supplement routine.
What is Alpha Lipoic Acid?   A potent antioxidant that serves multiple roles in our health.  It is essential for the production of energy, can be beneficial at helping with type 2 diabetes and nerves disease.  It has also been used to treat liver disease such as hepatitis.
It is also known as lipic acid and thioctic acid, it has equal portions of 2 molecules known to our biochemists as R and S isomers.  Most of ALA functions and benefits appear to come from the R form.
It functions as a cofactor in glycosis and the Krebs cycle, cellular processes that break down food molecules to produce energy, (which is why we are designed to get hungry to eat, the body needs energy at a cellular level) and it functions as an antioxidant and helps the body to recycle vitamins C and E and glutathione.
According to Lester Packer, PhD, of the University of Southern California, Alpha Lipoic Acid is the “universal antioxidant” because of its myriad activities.  The body converts some ALA to dihydrolipoic acid and even more potent antioxidant.   It also serves as a precursor to glutathione, which is the most powerful antioxidant made by the body.
Numerous studies have shown that supplementing with alpha lipoic acid can improve insulin function and may also lower blood sugar levels.  Considerable research has shown that it improves nerve pain and numbness related to diabetes.  Recent researchers have studied the benefits of alpha lipoic acid for other nerve disorders such as sciatic pain.
Other Helpful Benefits:
Liver: alpha lipoic acid restores the liver’s glutathione levels and promotes recovery.
Burning mouth syndrome:  Some 1.3 million Americans suffer from burning mouth syndrome.   ALA supplements can reduce symptoms of this painful condition,  In one study, 42 women were followed and 18 men with the burning mouth syndrome.  They were given either 200 mg of ALA or placebos 3 times daily for 2 months.  Nearly all of the patients on ALA showed improvement compared to placebo and 75% benefited substantially with some experiencing complete recovery.
Weight loss:  ALA has potential benefits in appetite control & weight loss.
Mental sharpness: a combination of alpha lipoic acid and acetyl L carnitine can lead to greater physical energy for some and mental sharpness according to studies.  Both nutrients are involved in how cells break down food to make up energy.

  • Overall Benefits of Alpha Lipoic Acid:
    Encourages energy production.
Supports blood sugar levels already within the normal range.
    Protects the liver.
    Supports the cardiovascular system.
    Supports nerve cell health
Supports the nervous and glandular systems.
Enhances the efforts of other antioxidants.
    How It Works:
Most antioxidants are either water- or fat-soluble. Alpha lipoic acid is both, making its protective powers available to all cells in the body. Subsequently, ALA is often called the universal antioxidant, and it can protect the integrity of the cell membrane as well as offset cell stress. ALA protects the cell membrane and promotes mitochondrial activity to keep your body and its tissues young. It also helps support the body’s natural removal of toxins. ALA directs calories away from fat production and toward energy production. Each capsule provides 250 mg alpha lipoic acid.
    Ingredients:
Alpha lipoic acid and turmeric root.
    Recommended Use:
Take 1 capsule with a meal twice daily.

How Do You Start Your Day?

coffee How many of you wouldn’t even dream of starting your day without a big ole cup of hot Java?  How many of you are relying on more than just coffee to get you through your day, like Red Bulls, or other commercial Energy drinks that are loaded with caffeine and other unmentionables?

No doubt you have learned to “enjoy” the coffee, who doesn’t LOVE the smell of it brewing, I have to admit I DO, and yes I do drink a nice mug of hot coffee in the morning, but I also love a hot mug of herbal tea, or even Dandiblend which is a wonderful  herbal coffee substitute.

When we are young guns our systems can tolerate and eliminate the toxic effects of coffee through our urine.  But as we get a tad more “seasoned”, and the kidneys gradually get some wear and tear on them, those acids begin to pile up in your system drop by drop.  How can you tell, well a couple tell tale signs would be “fatigue”, “headaches” that hit mid day or you may even wake up with it, “depressed” because you feel like your get up and go, got up and went.  So the rollercoaster effect begins, and you have to keep sending artificial stimulation to keep rolling through your day.  For the moment you feel better, maybe even feel like you could run a marathon, but that’s because you are kicking your endocrine glands, usually the “adrenals” to over produce.  That “feel-good” sensation is really a mask hiding the truth folks.  You can only over stimulate the endocrine glands for so long before they decide to go on strike.

There is a medical diagnosis referred to as “toxemia”, which is an overload of impurities that have build up in the system including the blood and it makes a person feel less than wonderful to say the least.  It can be very dangerous, even deadly.  When the body has headed in this direction  the body has to break out the emergency manual and figure out the fastest way to get these impurities out!  So typically the body sets up road blocks and redirects these, and calls on the endocrine glands to jump to the rescue.

Here’s the way it works:  We toss some food down the hatch, most folks are not reaching for the healthy “lets do a body good” choices.   If we walk back in history to our ancient ancestors their primitive diet looks nothing whatsoever like ours does today, yet Man’s digestive system back then, and our digestive system today is still the same, (so much for evolution.) So when we are choking down chili cheese hot dogs, fried meats, boat loads of fried French fries, donuts, cookies, pop, alcohol etc. and very little in the way of water, fresh fruits and veggies, toxins build up and that affects our liver.  Now whether the liver breaks down early or later in life depends upon how good of an organ it was at birth.  But trust me break down it will,(many folks have a back up going on with calcified bile called gall stones, and many are losing that major “helper” for the liver) and when it fails to filter and neutralize these toxins from our blood, a back up line of defense has to step up to the task.   That would be the endocrine glands.  The key ones that come into play : Pituitary (at base of the brain), the thyroid (located in the front of our neck), and the adrenals (which are the hats on top of both our kidneys.)

These gland secrete hormones, meaning there is no duct for anything to flow from, these glands are pushed into hyper-drive, forced to manufacture more of their secretion.  Keep in mind that the amount of a gland’s secretion is in exact ratio to the volume of blood entering it, the gland is then enlarged by this extra blood supply, which can bring some physical consequences.

The pituitary being located at the base of the brain doesn’t have a whole bunch of extra room to swell, it’s encased in a bony cup at the base of the skull.  This pressure can cause symptoms that can really get one’s attention: Migraines, the common type of epilepsy, acromegaly and blindness.

Now, I personally can attest to the migraine headaches, I experienced my first one when I was 8 years old. it lasted an entire week.  I couldn’t open my eyes, hold food down, could not stand an ounce of noise, had no urge to even try to speak, and I caught on rather quickly that crying made the pain worse so, they needed to be a no tears episodes.  My diet as a child was horrible, sweets were never restricted growing up, neither was soda. It took me years to connect the dots that anything with MSG would trigger a headache from hell, so Beef Jerky, Slim Jims, Funyon’s, lunchmeats, Chinese food, commercial salad dressings, lots of fast foods like White Caste hamburgers, these foods kept me bed ridden quite a bit growing up.  Then when Aspertame came on the scene, we had a whole new set of problems, it not only caused migraines for me, but caused sever neurological problems for me as well.

When the body is backed up with all these toxins the truth be told the headache/migraine is really an alcoholic type of headache.  I’m not talking about 8 year olds tipping their parents top shelf brandy when no one is looking, this is alcohol that ends up being manufactured in the patient’s own stomach.  When the sugars ferment and starches that are on overload in someone’s diet.

LETS TALK ABOUT THOSE ENDOCRINE GLANDS:

So what happens when the thyroid gland which controls ALL functions of the body’s three layers of skin?  We have the outer skin which we see and touch, the inner skin which is the mucous membrane, and the middle skin which is the serous membrane, which lines the pleural, pericardial, peritoneal and cranial cavities and our joints.

skin

There is a normal function of our outer skin which is to exhale gases, sweat out water and certain toxic salt substances and  it oils itself and its hair with special oil glands.  When this elimination is done forcefully, there are names of the dastardly effects that keep many Dermatologists busy: Eczema, ichthyosis and psoriasis are some of the common ones.  So is Acne.

thyroid

The next layer called mucous membranes, when the thyroid is under duress it may force toxins out through the mucous cells.  So when only the superficial cells of this inner skin are involved the secretion is just watery, doctors call it catarrh.  Yet as the deeper layers are affected, the discharge becomes muco-purulent (mucus and pus), sounds fabulous right?  Most know these as sinusitis, bronchitis, gastritis, enteritis, appendicitis, tonsillitis, mastitis, cervicitis, pyelitis,  notice they all end in “itis”…this means inflammation.

Adrenal

When we move on to the adrenal glands, these are what supplies us with on the spot energy when they sense we are in danger. Like when you walk up on a big spider and before you realize it you have screamed, done a weeks worth of aerobics in 2 seconds and your heart feels like its pumping outta your chest and you are probably sweating, (that’s what fight or flight might look like.)  When they secrete in this type of situation, our body goes into what is called “fight or flight” mode. Our body shuts down any other function that is not 100% needed so it can pulse all necessary energy into safety mode.

There is  necessary oxidation that is the fire of life, that must take place in our bodies.  The adrenal secretion is the agent that makes oxidation happen.  This secretion is so important that our body has other storage spots like the brain, the great nerve ganglia; the posterior pituitary, the sex glands and scattered areas throughout the kidneys.

The filtration process of our kidneys depends upon oxidation. So, consequently under stress, the kidney can be forced by the adrenals into elimination even to the point of destroying itself and elevating the blood pressure until a heart attack or other circulatory damage results.  We are hearing of more and more peeps on kidney dialysis these days, makes one wonder if this is just a coincidence or a evolutionary transit?

One of the other key functions of our adrenals is to regulate the strength of muscle tone.  So our skeletal muscles even our bowel muscle, I would stretch to say since all our organs are of a muscular design, everything is affected.  But lets roll back to the bowel muscle for a minute, we have 5 feet of bowel, with good well toned bowel muscle, our bowel function is perfect, effortless and regular.  Adrenal types, that is, individuals who are dominated by their adrenal glands, seldom suffer from constipation as long as the chemistry of the liver remains normal.  When an adrenal type becomes toxic from indigestion, they may notice that things become uncontrollable in the south pole region.  They usually experience weakened kidney issues or kidney disease, and have a weight on/weight off issue, they can lose weight but find they pack on the pounds too and this goes back and forth through out the years if they don’t address the issue.

DISEASE:

In my quest over the years, I have ran across a plethora of conflicting ideas on what actually causes disease.  There are those that take the stance that food has little to do with preparing the inner growing field for disease.  They stand on their beliefs that the body can utilize anything to good account with the exception of pure poisons.  So when it comes to the theories of toxemia, intestinal putrefaction, auto intoxication these are labeled as “faddist” and they refuse to take these seriously.  Dr. Logan Clendening in “The Human Body, stated: “what you want to eat will be good for you.  “what one relishes, nourishes “, “The appetite is a wonderfully sensitive instrument, a safe compass.  It keeps most of us exactly where we ought to be in weight and strength.”  I read that and thought WOW, can’t speak for how things looked back in 1927 when he wrote that book, but he died at the age of 61.

But if you just merely look around when your in public, and all the different products being sold as weight-loss products, one doesn’t need a scientific study to prove that our society is more “over” weight, than simmering at an “exactly where we ought to be weight & strength ” as Dr. Logan Clendening  so eloquently stated.

I found it interesting that in 1962, In his very first published book, Murray Bookchin, writing under the pseudonym “Lewis Herber”, warns of the dangers of pesticide use, and espouses an ecological and environmentalist worldview.
Our Synthetic Environment was one of the first books of the modern period in which an author espoused an ecological and environmentalist worldview. It predates Silent Spring (1962) by Rachel Carson, a more widely known book on the same topic widely credited as starting the environmental movement. (* http://www.ecology.iww.org)

Murray Bookchin wrote: “we are exchanging health for mere survival.  We have begun to measure man’s biological achievements, not in terms of his ability to lead a vigorous, physically untroubled life, but in terms of his ability to preserve his mere existence in an increasingly distorted environment.  Today, survival often entails ill health and rapid physical degeneration.  We are prepared to accept the fact that a relatively young individual will suffer from frequent headaches and digestive disturbance, continual nervous tension, insomnia, a persistent “cigarette cough.” a mouthful of decaying teeth, and respiratory ailments every winter.  We expect his physique to acquire the rotundity of a barrel shortly after the onset of middle age; we find nothing extraordinary in the fact that he is incapable of running more than a few yards without suffering loss of breath or walking a few miles without suffering exhaustion.”

That was back in 1962, not sure that much has appeared to change with his observation.  Harvard University published in 1957, the Findings of the United States Commission on Chronic Illness: “In 1950 an estimated 28 million Americans were suffering from chronic disease.  That number has NOT decreased despite all the “medical breakthroughs”, according to http://www.CDC.gov ; “Nov 14, 2016 – Chronic diseases are responsible for 7 of 10 deaths each year, and treating people with chronic diseases accounts for 86% of our nation’s health care costs.”  I can’t speak for anyone reading this post, but to me that is a staggering percentage.  We NEED a proverbial light bulb to blaze, not just light up.

I’m going to post more and move on to how our body moves through various “lines of defense” to do battle on our behalf.

It is my hope that I can light a flame of not only concern, but of determination in the hearts and minds of folks to start treating their bodies like the precious vessel that they are, your body is your most prized possession, treat it to the best of the best.

Until the next post:

Ingredients:
Novel herbal blend—this patent-pending combination of two herbs—Sphaeranthus indicus and Garcinia mangostana—may help promote weight loss, especially as fat, when combined with a weight-reduction diet, according to initial research. The extracts are thought to promote fat breakdown and weight loss. Specifically, they may affect levels of adiponectin in the body. Secreted mostly by white adipose tissue, adiponectin levels tend to be lower in individuals who are overweight. Rhodiola root extract—native to high-altitude regions of Europe and Asia, Rhodiola roseahas well documented “adaptogen” properties. Adaptogenic herbs like rhodiola help safely counteract adverse physical, chemical or biological stressors. Study results indicate that rhodiola may improve physical performance and mental capacity, and it promotes a sense of well being. Our extract is standardized to 3% of the active ingredient rosavin, the amount used in clinical trials. Green coffee bean extract (decaffeinated)— chlorogenic acid, thought to be the active ingredient in safe, caffeine-free green coffee bean extract (Coffea canephora), may help block sugar absorption, promoting satiety and healthy blood sugar levels already in the normal range. In initial studies, taking green coffee bean extract has resulted in weight loss, much of it fat, in overweight individuals. Green tea leaf extract (decaffeinated)—drinking polyphenol-rich green tea (Camellia sinensis) has been linked to good health for centuries. Beyond already-documented benefits for cardiovascular health, brain health and healthy aging, the extract’s active components—including polyphenols such as epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG)—now show promise for weight loss. Researchers believe green tea may have a thermogenic (calorie- and fat-burning) effect and may inhibit fat absorption. Hesperidin bioflavonoid extract—found in citrus fruit, this phenol promotes blood flow and a healthy inflammatory response by helping support healthy blood vessels.

Natural Therapy for Cancer

Fruits and Vegetables

Anyone who has ever had cancer, or had a loved one with cancer, knows the feelings of fear, anxiety, worry and often hopelessness that this very serious illness can bring.  These emotions are very understandable it’s a serious illness.  So, its little wonder that cancer usually causes intense emotional distress in everyone involved.

Of course, the subject of cancer is far too involved to adequately address in a mere blog post.  However, I can acquaint you with some important information about cancer from a natural healing perspective and give you some ideas about options you may not be familiar with.  However, I strongly encourage you to seek professional help when dealing with cancer.  You need competent health care professionals helping you with your program and monitoring your progress, but you should also do some study on your own and learn about things you can do for yourself.

WHAT EXACTLY IS CANCER?

Cancer is a disease involving cells that have undergone a genetic mutation so they are no longer responsive to messages from the body that regulate cell metabolism and growth.  These mutations are believed to be the result of free radical damage turn cancerous.  Normal cells have an aerobic metabolism, which means they produce energy by means of oxygen and oxidation.  Anaerobic cells produce energy without oxygen via a process of fermentation.

This is important to know because if the body is highly oxygenated, the environment for cancer does not exist.  In fact, in 1931 Dr. Otto Warburg won a Nobel Prize for proving that whenever any cell is denied 60% of its oxygen requirements, it can become cancerous.  So, conditions that deprive cells of oxygen (like chronic inflammation, buildup of toxins or problems with red blood cells or circulation) increase the risk of cancer.  An overly acidic environment in the body is also a breeding ground for cancer.

Another important thing you should know is that cancer cells are forming in the body on a regular basis.  Very likely, you have a few inside you right now.  Don’t worry, the immune system normally recognizes these deviant cells and destroys them.

muscles

Therefor two factors must exist for you to develop cancer.  First, your body has to have a toxic, low oxygen environment that encourages the development of anaerobic cancer cells, and second, your immune system must be weakened so that it is not able to recognize and destroy these cells.

aerobic-respiration

So, while killing cancer cells (the goal of conventional cancer therapy) is an important part of treating cancer, it does not fix the underlying problems that created the cancer in the first place.  This is the weakness of the standard medical approach to cancer.  An effective protocol for cancer should do more than just destroy cancer cells, it should try to restore a normal, healthy environment in the body and rebuild the immune system.

So, even if one choose to use orthodox cancer therapies to destroy the cancer cells, they would be wise to consider doing natural therapy to restore the body’s state of health and prevent the cancer from wanting to re-occur.

PRINCIPLE #1: INCREASE OXYGEN LEVELS

Cancer cells are anaerobic, which means they live and thrive in a low oxygen environment.  They are able to get their energy by metabolizing nutrients, notable sugars and carbohydrates without oxygen, in a fermentative process.  Cancer cells cannot survive in a high oxygen environment, so keeping the body well oxygenated inhibits cancer.  Do this by getting plenty of fresh air and exercise, breathe deeply, if you smoke, QUIT.

oxygen

There are several supplements that can enhance oxygenation in the body.  For starters, CHINESE LUNG SUPPORT:  helps with oxygen delivery and uptake and is very useful for anyone with respiratory weakness.  Another Chinese remedy that strengthens the lungs and enhances oxygen transport is CORDYCEPS.  Cordyceps also helps the immune system.

LIQUID CHLOROPHYLL: is another great way to enhance oxygen transport.  It prevents clumping of red blood cells and helps them carry more oxygen to the tissues.  Research has shown that it can reduce the risk of cancer.

PRINCIPLE #2: BALANCE pH

In order to have optimal health, the body must maintain a proper internal pH.  Cancer cells prefer an acid pH environment.  Their fermentative metabolism also releases large amounts of lactic acid that inhibit transportation o oxygen to neighboring cells.  This spreads the environment for cancer.  A buildup of acid waste also inhibits toxins from being released by the cells.

ph-foods

The best way to counteract this acidic environment is to eat large quantities of fresh, preferable organic, fruits and veggies every day.  This is well-recognized as one of the best ways of decreasing your risk of cancer, but unfortunately, its benefit in helping folks recover from cancer is often ignored.  Fresh fruits and veggies not only help alkalize the body, they also strengthen immunity, aid detoxification and provide much-needed antioxidants.

Besides eating fresh fruits and veggies, there are several other supplements that can help alkalize the body.  The first is Ultimate Green Zone:  this is a whole food supplement that alkalizes the environment, aids in detoxification and builds the immune system to help it recognize and destroy cancer cells.

Digestive enzymes are a MUST to help balance pH.  my favorite choice for folks with cancer is Proactazyme plus and PDA Combo, these are great choices with balancing pH and assisting with proper digestion.  You can’t nourish a sick body if the food processor, a.k.a. digestive system can’t process the nutrients.  A lack of hydrochloric acid leads to excess lactic acid in the body, which sets the stage for cancer to thrive.  These are taken with meals to help the body metabolize food properly so as to avoid a buildup of acid waste and toxins.  They are also taken between meals to help rid the body of excess proteins that may be causing acid in the blood.

PRINCIPLE #3: STRENGTHEN THE IMMUNE SYSTEM

The body normally and regularly produces cancer cells due to free radical damage, environmental factors or other causes.  A healthy immune system recognizes and destroys these defective cells.  When the immune system is unable to recognize these deviant cells or is too weak to destroy them, the disease we call cancer takes root.

immune-system

There are many reasons why the immune system becomes weakened; poor nutritional intake is a major factor for many.  The loss or destruction of friendly bacteria in the intestinal tract is another.  Excessive sugar consumption supplies cancer cells with the energy they need to proliferate fast, (refined sugar is like fertilizer for cancer cells,) while contributing to chronic inflammation that distresses the immune system.

Improving nutritional intake, especially eating those 7-9 servings of fruits and veggies daily, will help the immune system, as will eliminating chemically laden processed foods.  Reducing intake of sugar, white flour and other simple carbohydrates will also prove helpful.

TRIGGER IMMUNE: helps to rebuild a weakened immune system, enhance vital energy and immune function and increase white blood cell production and platelet count.  It is very helpful in recovering from chemotherapy and can also be taken during chemotherapy to strengthen the system to resist toxic affects from chemotherapy.

IMMUNE STIMULATOR:  is another supplement that can boost the immune system to fight cancer.  It not only enhances natural killer cells (lymphocytes), which kill cancer cells, it also increases T-cell production and antibody production.  An important benefit of Immune simulator is its ability to enhance cellular communication, which helps the immune system identify and target calls it needs to destroy.

UNA DE GATO COMBINATION: is another herbal formula that strengthens a weakened immune system.  The principle ingredient, Una de Gato, has been used in South American for cancer treatment and contains compounds that inhibit tumor growth in animals.

PRINCIPLE #4: DETOXIFY

The human body is bombarded with toxins, heavy metals, chlorine and thousands of chemicals that we breathe in, consume in our diet or absorb through our skin.  These all cause free radicals in the body and contribute to the environment of cancer.

chemical

Avoiding these toxins is part of both cancer prevention and holistic cancer therapy.  In particular, avoid or eliminate refined and processed foods (especially foods raised with pesticides, antibiotics or steroids), toxic cleaning products (such as laundry detergents, skin care items, fluoride toothpaste, etc.) and chlorinated and fluoridated water. Research the ingredients that are in cleaning and health/beauty products before you purchase, we all carry mini computers today called “smart phones” which can give you information lickety split.  Also, avoid microwaved or irradiated food and protect yourself from electrical equipment (electromagnetic pollution may be a major causal factor in cancer).

It is also helpful to assist the body in detoxifying from these substances using any of the following supplements:

For starters: E-TEA or also referred to as Essiac Tea is a famous anticancer formula that helps the body eliminate toxins.  It improves lymphatic drainage and stimulates the immune system.

ALL CELL DETOX:  is another good, general cleansing formula that is based on a Native American medicine man’s cancer remedy.  It reduces inflammation, supports the liver and digestive system and helps neutralize acid.

BLOOD BUILD:  is a supplement I think everyone should use cancer or not at least 3 times a year.  it nourishes the blood and helps increase its volume.  It is an excellent formula for helping the body rebuild after chemotherapy.

PRINCIPLE #5: USE ANTIOXIDANTS

Our need for oxygen exceed the demand for any nutrient, even water, because we need oxygen for normal energy production in the cell.  You can go 3 weeks with zero food, and 3 days even without water, but you cannot go 3 minutes without oxygen.  Oxygen can also produce free radicals that can damage normal cells and cause cancer. Antioxidant nutrients protect the body from this free radical damage, thereby reducing cancer risk.  Antioxidants can also be used in a treatment program for cancer, because they help protect the body from harmful side effects of radiation and chemotherapy.

Some antioxidants to consider would include:  HIGH POTENCY GRAPINE:  which is an extract of grape seed that helps reduce inflammation and prevent cell damage, and GREEN TEA EXTRACT: which contains polyphenols called catechins, powerful antioxidants that protect cells from cancer and kill cancer cells.  One of these catechins is epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which was shown in several studies to kill cancer cells without harming healthy tissue.

One of my all time favorites is THAI-GO: its a liquid which many cancer patients will assimilate liquids easier, but this contains xanthones, a powerful antioxidant that has been shown in numerous studies to inhibit cancer cells and aid in tumor reduction.  These compounds cause apoptosis (or preprogrammed cell death) in cancer cells.  Xanthones exert cytotoxic (cancer cell killing) effects against human hepatocellular carcinoma cells, and have been shown to inhibit the growth of human leukemia HL-60 cells.  Xanthones have also been shown to be effective against human breast cancer SKBR3 cells.

IF-RELIEF: also contains xanthones and can be helpful for reducing chronic inflammation and pain.

PRINCIPLE #6: KILL CANCER CELLS

For those diagnosed with cancer, it is important to kill off the cancerous cells.  The problem is that chemotherapy and radiation also cause damage to healthy cells.  Killing cancer cells also produces toxins that the body MUST eliminate.

There are some natural compounds that can help kill cancer cells, too.  PAW PAW CELL REG: is a standardized extract of acetogenins from the American Paw paw tree.  These compounds have been shown in scientific research to cause apoptosis (preprogrammed cell death) in cancer cells by inhibiting their energy production.

Paw Paw Cell Reg is not appropriate for all cancers and should be used as a part of a comprehensive cancer program.  However, even if one chooses to use chemotherapy drugs.  Paw Paw may still be beneficial.  It has also been shown to reduce chemotherapy drug resistance.  By itself, paw pas doesn’t have the side effects of hair loss, weight loss, extreme nausea and compromised immunity.  It may cause nausea in larger doses however.

Paw paw is NOT recommended as a supplement for preventing cancer.  It is only appropriate when a person HAS cancer.  Paw paw is also ineffective against leukemia, lymphoma and other cancers that do not involve tumors.

Another supplement that can help the body destroy cancer cells, is HIGH POTENCY PROTEASE,  it breaks down the protein coat on cancer cells and also helps prevent cancer cells that are breaking down from creating a toxic load on nearby healthy cells.  It is taken BETWEEN meals for this purpose, and taken WITH meals to enhance digestion.

PRINCIPLE #7: INCREASE JOY AND PLEASURES

One German study shows a commonality that all cancer patients experienced a trauma and an unresolved psychological issue shortly before the cancer developed.  Stress is a big component of cancer because psychological stress creates physical stress that dramatically reduces immune function.

laughter.jpg

Reducing stress should be a stress-less task.  That’s why the goal here is not to reduce stress , but rather to deliberately seek out joy and pleasure.  A pleasurable, happy experience has a more positive effect on the immune system and healing than the stressful effects of an experience.

So, seek out pleasurable experiences. Find things that make you laugh.  Spend time with family, friends or pets.  Take a walk in the fresh air and sunshine.  Surround yourself with pleasing colors, smells, sounds.  Listen to favorite music; get up and dance.  Listen to calming, meditative music.  Take a hot bath in Epsom salts and lavender oil.  Treat yourself to a  full body massage, take a mini vacation or go to a spa for the day.

You can also reduce stress by taking some herbal support like NUTRI-CALM: which replenishes  the nervous system and adrenals.  ADRENAL SUPPORT : will help build stamina and promote healing as well as giving the body more ability to cope with stress.  Another option is CHINESE STRESS RELIEF:  which can assist the body’s ability to relax, counteracting stress.

Cancer is a difficult multi-facet disease to work with, but many folks have successfully recovered from cancer using both natural and conventional therapies or a combination of the two.  Seek out professional assistance in designing the holistic program that is a proper fit for you.  Remember, there is hope!

Asparagus: who knew….

Food Tip Tuesday:
The wonders of Asparagus

:asparagus
*contains an alkaloid called Asparagine, the value of this alkaloid for our health
*natural diuretic particularly when combined with some carrots,
*supports kidney/urinary health
*helpful for diabetes and anemia when used in conjunction with other veggies..
Now. I’m talking about either eating raw, chopped in salads or “juiced”. when asparagus is cooked ( many cook it until it’s limp and nasty) you are losing the value of the alkaloid as the hydrogen and oxygen are dissipated and the natural salts formed by the combination of this alkaloid are virtually lost or their value destroyed.
By using as a juice in conjunction with carrots, it helps break up oxalic acid crystals in the kidneys and thru the muscular system. it is good for rheumatism, neuritis. Rheumatism results from the end product of digestion of meat and meat products with generate excessive amounts of urea (according to Dr. Norman Walker)
Continuous consumption of meat proteins can tax the workings of the kidneys and eliminative organs, straining them to the point where progressively smaller amounts of uric acid is eliminated and a greater amount is then absorbed by the muscles. The end result is painful and referred to as rheumatism.
This is also one of the underlying causes for prostate gland issues, in which case this juice combination, in addition to the carrot, beet and cucumber juice has been quite helpful.
