Why Not Store bought Juices?

Fruits and VegetablesWhen I’m working with my patient’s, part of my nutritional recommendations will ALWAYS include fresh “homemade” juices vs. store bought ones.  Many sigh and give me the eye-roll, but let me tell you there is nothing like making fresh raw veggie or fruit juices at home with your own juicer.

I KNOW juicing takes time, energy and a commitment to the routine. But let’s face it… IF you want to be healthier and feel better, why would you think that requires no “commitment, time or energy” to make that a reality?

It’s easy with advertising to fall into the fog of belief that the availability and variety of store-bought juices that are taking up so much space in our grocery stores, even in the coolers at gas stations and convenient stores are tempting.  This market is exploding and it tempts us because it’s convenient, but folks it’s truly unreliable marketing, and they are using pseudo-healthy buzzwords.  So here’s the scoop on how to understand the juice labels at the grocery store and choose the best store-bought juices for you and your family.

(I highly recommend you purchase the book “The Food Babe Way” by Vani Hari she has been beyond dedicated to empowering folks with the knowledge of what is hidden in the foods folks are eating)

When you see “100% Juice”, let me state those words mean NOTHING… Food companies are allowed to say “100% Juice” on the label even when the juice contains additives, flavorings or preservatives.

Concentrate” is really just a fancy name for syrup:  Juice concentrates are made from fruits & vegetables that are heated down to a syrup and then have added water.  The concentration process involves both the addition and subtraction of chemicals and natural plant by-products in order to condense the juice.  During concentration, fruits and vegetables lose flavor.  This is WHY companies then have to ADD flavorings back in to give the juice a fresh taste.

“Not from concentrate” could mean flavored:  According to the book Squeezed:  What you Don’t Know about Orange Juice, by Alissa Hamilton, companies store orange juice in giant tanks and extract the oxygen from them.  This then preserves the liquid and prevents it from spoiling for up to a year!  However, this storage system causes the orange juice to lose all of its flavor.  So the industry uses” Flavor packs” to re-flavor the juice, (does this sound as gross to you as it does to me?)

GMO’S:  I have had folks message me and tell me… “I’m so sick of hearing about GMO’s already”, well Genetically Modified foods ARE “impostors”, foods that have been grown after the seeds have been modified in a laboratory.  They are not what God gave us.  I’m going to continue to push this envelop and YOU should too, our cries keep falling upon deaf ears, however, where your voice will speak the loudest is through your SPENDING power, STOP buying what they are selling…. Many juice companies use citric acid to extend the shelf life of their product.  You would think citric acid comes from citrus, like Lemons, oranges, and limes, BUT it doesn’t.  Most food manufacturers use genetically engineered corn and sugar beets to create citric acid, by synthetically fermenting the glucose from these crops in a lab.  And some juice companies go as far as adding sugar (which could be from GMO sugar beets), high-fructose corn syrup (from GMO corn), and other ingredients that could contain GMOs.

Synthetic ingredients:  The sneakiest ingredients lurking in juice come in the form of synthetics made in a lab.  These include Fibersol-2 (a proprietary synthetic digestion-resistant fiber), frutooligosaccharides (synthetic fibers and sweeteners), and inulin (an artificial and invisible fiber that’s added to foods to increase fiber content).  Avoid synthetic ingredients in your diet, because they’re usually made from petroleum, coal, and DMOs, none of which offer any beneficial nutrients.

Pasteurization:   This very process KILLS all raw enzymes, minerals and vitamins, which means it kills off our reasons for drinking the juice in the first place.  Heat kills bad stuff and the good stuff, making the juice pretty much worthless.  Juice companies sometimes even replenish the lost vitamin content with synthetic vitamins because there is barely any nutrition left after they process.  Furthermore, most companies create vitamins through chemical manipulation and synthesis, not from actual fruits and vegetables.

I intentionally chose NOT to put the word “best” in lower case letters in this caption, because freshly juiced is always going to be the BEST.  But now that I’ve pointed out commercial juices empty contribution to the nutritional input.  Here are some juice choices that offer some better options IF you are going to spend your money on store bought juices.

There are a wide variety of different juicers for sale and with these choices there is a varied price point as well.  Some juicers are easier to clean than others, and some are made with higher quality workmanship than others.  Over the years I’ve used more than my fair share of juicers.  I’m offering a list below starting with MY personal/professional favorite.

CHAMPION JUICER:  This is super easy to clean, it’s a masticating juicer that grinds the vegetables against a filter, rather than working as a centrifuge, it also offers you to make your own fresh nut butters, fresh baby foods, even fresh frozen fruit sorbets.

Price point for this machine is “UNDER” $300

BREVILLE JUICER: This offers a stainless steel centrifuge that spins the vegetables until they separate into juice and pulp.  It’s a bit more of a challenge to clean after using and I felt the noise factor was louder than I was comfortable with.  But it’s a good juicer that gets the job done.

Price point for this machine is “UNDER $300”

JACK LALANNE JUICER: This was one of my 1st juicers, its a centrifuge juicer.  It’s lower in price than most centrifuge juicers, it’s by far one of the harder ones to clean, but for those on a budget, it offers a nice affordable price point to get you going with preparing healthy home-made fresh juices for you and your family.

Price point for this machine is “UNDER $150”

I encourage my patient’s to DRINK their juices on an empty stomach.  You don’t want to have the juices AFTER you have just eaten your meal.  You are lowering the benefit of drinking the juice and some experience some digestive issues like bloating, or even heartburn as a result.  The benefit of drinking your fresh juices on an empty stomach is because it allows the nutrients in the juice to go straight to your blood.  Having a meal already in your stomach is going to prevent this fast absorption from happening.  So IF you have already eaten a mean, wait a couple of hours to drink the juice.  If you ARE drinking your juice on an empty stomach as I recommend, wait about 20 mins. to down your breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Also, I’d like to add that NOT all produce is meant to be combined when it comes to juicing.  This is NOT the place to toss everything but the kitchen sink into the recipe because hey it’s produce and it’s healthy.  Digestion still needs to occur and some of the naturally occurring enzymes that are in various types of produce are NOT meant to be combined!

So with your greens, it’s fine to juice an apple in with those to add a bit of sweetness to the juice.  BUT any of your melons you choose to juice (which are delicious juiced), should be juiced “ALONE”, you can combine any of the MELONS together in a juice, but their enzymes are delicate and the body digests them quickly,  Ever notice that when you choose to eat watermelon as a dessert after a picnic meal you bloat and burp it up for what seems like forever?  That’s because everything “fermented” in the gut, it didn’t digest as it should.  All melons should be eaten and/or juiced BY THEMSELVES!

So I do work extensively with my clients with proper juicing recipes and what should and shouldn’t be combined.

JUICES ARE NOT MEANT TO REPLACE MEALS: Juices are wonderful tools for helping the body clean house and repair, but they are not meant to replace a meal, drinking them before meals, and between meals if you need an energizing pick me up in the middle of the day is wonderful.

Another health benefit of juicing is…. let’s be honest…. try as we may, many don’t eat near enough fruits and veggies each day, juicing is a wonderful healthy approach that allows you to reach your daily servings of fruits and vegetables, especially where our children are concerned.  Most kiddo’s will drink the daylights out of these juices before they sit and want to eat them with a fork.

Here is a wonderful juicer review link: https://www.reviews.com/juicer/ to help if you are uncertain which juicer would be right for you and your family.

I hope this was helpful….. As always I’d be over the moon to work with anyone who is wanting to benefit from changing their lifestyle and nutritional path for improving their energy and over-all health.

“Fresh Vegetable and Fruit Juices, What’s missing in your body?” by N.W. Walker D. Sc.

Experience has taught me,,, you don’t “catch” a cold you earn it…..Sneezing? Congested? Let’s talk

With this time of the year, many struggle with sneezing, or congested breathing, over all body fatigue… Some believe or refer to it as “seasonal” allergies, “cold”.

I’d like to touch bases on the “common cold” aspect for just a sec….. For many long years scientists have been on that elusive hunt to find and isolate and identify a germ they can say is what causes the “common cold”…. I read that somewhere in the 1920’s science stated that they made the discovery of a lifetime… a “germ” that they felt was absolutely responsible for the common cold. this next part throws me… “BUT IT WAS TOO SMALL & ELUSIVE TO BE CAUGHT or EVEN VISIBLE BY MEANS OF THE MOST POWERFUL MICROSCOPES AVAILABLE. Yet…. they found the germ responsible”!!? Now think about what that says, the germ is to small & elusive to be caught, yet we are told we “caught a cold”…. and it is too small to be visible with whatever microscopes they had available in the 1920’s… Hmmmmm

From some of the available research, I have not seen any research that states they have “caught” the germ responsible to be blamed for the common cold. I mean they obviously have identified many different germs, bacteria and viruses, but none of them have be able to “start” a cold. Yet the germs, viruses and bacteria are able to feed on the mucous of Common Colds, which is the very purpose for which they were created. Namely to dissolve, break up, decompose and dispose of the mucus that manifests the Common Cold. So we are told that certain virus’s cause the common cold, yet, even for a virus to breed it has to have something to “feed” on, that would be an overload of mucous .  Which the virus didn’t cause, the substance was already in place building to a state of over abundance, typically from the state of inflammation beginning.

Work with me here for a bit….

Electricity in your home works from fuses & breakers. Correct?
So what happens when the circuit is overheated because you overloaded that circuit with too much electrical draw? Does a “germ” send you a text message to alert you that a fuse/circuit will blow out or that overheating the fuse/circuit can in some cases cause a house fire? Nope, not likely.
I’m no electrician, but I believe what is supposed to happen is the fuse is suppose to blow, or the circuit will “trip”, however if for some reason there is a malfunction, a possible house fire can be caused. Now, how does this compare to what happens in your body when you “catch a cold”? stay with me for a minute and I think I can make this come alive….

When there is waste build up in the body, when it is not eliminated, it builds and in some people backs up and what happens when you dump yard food scrapes in a pile in your yard and you call it “compost”? It ferments as it ferments it generates “Heat”, which in this case the heat is being generated in the body; this is how it is supposed to work by the way. However, when waste has fermented and reached a toxic state in the body, the built in alert systems within become worried and sends a signal that we have been neglecting our inner house keeping, what is one of those signals? Mucous elimination which has been labeled “a cold”.

It is just as simple…. really…. as that, when the warning is ignored and disregarded, more serious conditions pop up. Or worse yet, we are so irritated with the mucus, we take some over the counter remedy to “dry” it up….. Why? the body created the tidal wave it needed to wash it OUT! so stop working against your body and work with it. NOW here comes the big money question… people deal with “common”cold like episodes around what times of the year? Typically SPRING & LATE FALL , EARLY WINTER. The body is doing house cleaning before each of those seasons.

So a cold is something you “earn” not something you “catch”, it is the result of too much accumulated waste & improper or sluggish elimination. The colon is usually the recipient of all this accumulated waste. Yet toxins obviously spread thru the body generating unhealthy mucus; many have experienced “sinus mucus”. We can run fevers because the body is turning up the thermostat to cook the waste, open the lymph system and use the largest elimination organ the skin to aid and assist with removing some trash, then usually after that the fever pops on the scene, the south pole, (a.k.a. Da colon)… turns into a bit of a raging river taking out the trash thru that method. The sinus cavity does it’s part too and we get “red nose” syndrome and we sneeze & blow out STUFF from there too.

So if this is all a natural part of housecleaning why do so many people curse & complain, I KNOW IT DOESN’T FEEL LIKE A COMFY STROLL DOWN A SANDY BEACH. but be glad that our body knows what to do in spite of our choices folks…. and if you don’t prefer to “earn” a cold, then stop putting so much into your body that requires such drastic housecleaning to take place.

So what do you do when you notice this uncomfortable event is making it’s presence known? If it was ME, I’d start with an enema, and fruit juices (with a juicer), fast for a couple of days with nothing but lemon water and properly prepared juices, potassium broth or even warm vegetable broth. Also, remember the more raw foods and juices you consume, can simply be the best preventative to over accumulation of waste & mucus in the body especially the colon. So that means to lighten the load of what types of foods you are eating and instead take in foods that are simple for the body to process.

Think of it this way, when you drive your car and rack up a lot of miles people are familiar with changing the oil, why?  Well the oil begins to thicken and makes it harder to circulate through the motor.  Guess what, the body really isn’t all that different, boat loads more complicated YES, but same concept applies, the body and all its marvelous functions never take a vacation, so since most folks never go out of their way to change or reduce the amount of comfort foods, breads, pasta’s, meats, refined sugars, gravies, sauces, dairy, etc. you get a build up inside and I believe that our bodies have a pre-set desire to encourage a seasonal cleansing routine as our calendar moves from one season into the next which if you pay attention are when the highest likelihood of peeps suffering from cold symptoms.

There are certain juice combinations that work better, and certain food combinations that can help your body with thinning and clearing out accumulated mucous.  There are also some wonderful herbal cleansing options that you can incorporate as well.

Might I recommend committing to some well needed time to incorporate a 2 week cleanse at least twice a year.  I personally incorporate it quarterly, but twice a year will reap some healthy benefits.

And If you like some personal one on one direction and guidance with your inner housecleaning.  you can go to http://www.mkt.com/harvested-health-llc and see which one of my programs would be a good fit for you.

FOOD TIP TUESDAY: Brussels Sprouts J

Food Tip Tuesday:
The juice of Brussels Sprouts combined with carrot, some green bean, and romaine furnishes a combo of elements which helps to strengthen and regenerate the INSULIN properties of the pancreatic functions which are critical for our digestive process. For this reason, it has been shown to be a huge benefit for those trying to balance their diabetes.

Don’t try to feel the need to fit juicing “into” your daily cooking routine, add it to a meal you are already in the kitchen preparing, who says you cannot drink a veggie juice with breakfast, lunch or in place of a side salad with dinner?  Many try to squeeze these in between mealtime and get frustrated.  Switch it up and support your health, incorporate some juicing into your daily meal planning.

Why Raw vs. Cooked?

Many of my client’s when I suggest incorporating more “raw” foods into their dietary routine, I get a multitude of different faces. LOL… I know it is not what many are used to doing, and they strongly question my methods or logic as to why!!!!!!

I can sum it up simply put… “ENZYME ACTIVITY”. When our foods are cooked many are done at temps of 350 or better; way beyond what our normal body temperature rolls at.

Dr. Dave Frahm (The Cancer Battle Plan)//ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?ServiceVersion=20070822&OneJS=1&Operation=GetAdHtml&MarketPlace=US&source=ac&ref=tf_til&ad_type=product_link&tracking_id=hahell-20&marketplace=amazon&region=US&placement=087477893X&asins=087477893X&linkId=2a583824ea0b46e7aa847e2c8238c31e&show_border=true&link_opens_in_new_window=false&price_color=333333&title_color=0066c0&bg_color=ffffff

” Imagine your car without a battery. Dead, right? That’s exactly what your body would be without enzymes. To put it succinctly, enzymes are the “spark plugs of life.” There is little in the body that can function without them, digestion, endocrine system, body filters like liver & kidney’s. They are what regenerates our cells, they help with taking out the trash within our bodies.
So the more cooked “dead” food you consume it is sure to state eventually the body is going to head that direction as well. Sorry but the truth….

That doesn’t mean you don’t ever eat any cooked foods, it means you need to contribute a balanced effort.  I usually have client’s begin with a 60/40 method to begin, meaning 60% of what you are consuming needs to be raw from the fruits/veggie category, and the other 40% cooked.  So easy solution, have some fruit smoothies for breakfast, and a side salad with lunch and dinner, make fruits and veggies your in between meal snacks.  There is a wealth of recipe websites and blogs rolling around these days with some wonderful creative ways to avoid getting “BORED” with what you are eating.

Another great avenue is to invest in a good juicer  I recommend the Champion Juicer: It’s way more than a typical juicer, you can make your juices of course, but you can also make your own “nut” butters ( almond, cashew, peanut etc.), you can make fresh homemade baby food, and even homemade fruit ice cream.  Clean up is a total breeze.  I’ve had mine for over 30 yrs. folks. It has managed to survive 5 children, demonstrations for Raw Food & Juicing classes held at my office, coupled with daily use for years.

So the bottom line is, if you continue to eat food daily that has a shelf life, the essence is you will shorten your life.  The body by design, NEEDS to have live nutrients for survival.  Eating animal meat everyday isn’t going to get it done,  eating nothing but bread, pasta and potatoes isn’t going to get it done either.  There has to be a balance between real fruits and vegetables, nuts for the body to assimilate proper amounts of vitamins, nutrients, minerals and enzymes which these “real/raw” foods naturally contain.

So in answer to my title of this post: Why Raw vs. Cooked?  Because it’s what your body needs.  Your car needs unleaded fuel to run, you wouldn’t put diesel fuel in instead, or you would put sugar water in the tank, because it won’t be what the running components need for your car to “move”.  Same analogy applies to your body an the type of fuel you “choose” as the running agent.
